Thank you everyone for the kind words.
And yes it is Code KK Tripoli Turquoise I have always loved this color and wanted something that wasn't so mainstream. |

While the paint was curing I changed my attention to getting the wheels restored .
After blasting the original wheels were epoxy primed, then the rear inside and center of the wheels were painted Black. Then the front sides painted body color . |

Time to mount some tires .......
My neighbor owns a small repair shop/gas station in town ,and he was nice enough to let me use the tire machine at his shop to mount and balance these tires . |
Looking AWESOME!!

Started working on getting the rood infrastructure ready for the headliner and the outside roof skin prepped for the vinyl roof to be installed .
Cleaned up the headliner bows and the outer headliner roof brackets and repainted them to mimic the factory steel look. The roof pad and rear sail panel sound deadening is near perfect and was left alone. Can still see ink stamping in the padding . The center roof bracing was in excellent shape. Once again starting with a clean California car was well worth it for sure . |

Before having the headliner installed ,I needed to prep and paint the metal finish area behind the package tray and get it painted . Sanded, primed, sanded some more, and then finish spayed using SEM trim black .
Then I scuffed the roof with some 400 grit , in an effort help the top glue have some adhesion to the roof . |

This day was an exciting one for me, as the vinyl top and headliner were finally ready to be installed . I was fortunate that the Father of one of my co-workers has done upholstery work for 30+ years. He was nice enough to come over to my home, and install the package tray, headliner ,and vinyl top for me . I was told by many i was crazy for installing a vinyl roof , but I think in the end it was the correct decision for me .

I actually have set of headers, Moroso Chrome valve covers and air cleaner in the original 1982 boxes, a nice Accel Supercoil ,and some old school Lakewood traction action bars laying around, but I cant bring myself to install them . Thought of building it to resemble something which would have looked similar to what drove around town in my High School days ,so I stashed some parts just in case . |

Very nice work, could you post some pics of the thin rocker molding clips that goes above the wide ones at the bottom…

Any updates on the car?

Been a long time since I've added any updates .
Between life, and work, didn't have the time to work on it much Then I recently was sidetracked as I helped our son Alex with his new project. He saved up and bought a 68k mile original 05" Silverado RCSB as his 1st Hot Rod project . It is an ALL original 5.3/4L60 truck . Couldn't pass up the opportunity to help him do the things he wanted to it of course . |

Of course like most of us, he craved more power ha ha ..
The goal was something he could daily drive ,yet make 500+ crank HP on a budget. So I helped him build a new engine for it. We sourced a 6.0 LY6 builder from an employee here at BTR and gave it a typical budget rebuild like so many of us have done when we were younger and less financially fortunate . Luckily the engine was in great shape so we were able to use all the hard parts . He is lucky his Dad has access to some great equipment as well so that made things easier for sure when it cam time to freshened things up . Here he is unloading the engine after we brought it home and before assessing the parts . |

The next line of business was to clean the block and give it a quick hone along with some new cam bearings.
We could have use the Sunnen to hone the block but I wanted him to get the real hot rodders low budget experience like I did back when I was 18 and had no money ... So a brush hone and some cylinder lube and here we go .... |

Next up we added some true Hollow stem LS3 intake valves and Ferrea Exhaust valves as wel as a quick lap in to make sure everything seats well.
Then the heads were CC'd to check chamber size, and consequently milled .040" . Along with a .045 gasket and 61.5 CC chamber we set the compression at 10.75-1 Perfect for pump 93 gas.. |

Here ha has all the fancy OEM rotating assy parts cleaned and fresh out of the jet wash tank .
Also had him assemble the heads using our .660 lift dual spring kit w Titanium retainers in preparation for the soon to come new higher rpm camshaft. |

One of my duties here at BTR is doing all of the custom cam work.
So of course had to whip something up for my boy.. Its mild enough to daily drive ,yet has a medium nice lope to it and run hard up to 6800 or so. Even added some special engraving for him on the snout to help him on his journey ... Also we added his initials ( A.D.) since I always call him by his 1st and middle initials all the time . |

Time to build and engine .
We 1st checked all the clearances ( although nothing needed tweaked thanks to GM doing the work for us :) The freshly machined block being delivered home .. lol Here Alex is final cleaning the cylinders one last time . |

After he checked clearances it was time to set the ring gap .
I must have said something funny at that moment :) |

Crank is in and here I had him checking end play .

I want to know what the Nova is looking like.

Next up rods and pistons ............
Along with checking Rod side clearance. |
2 Attachment(s)
Cam installed and being degreed in to verify cam timing is correct .
Also time to check PTV( actually did this after the 1st piston was installed although I've done enough camshafts now to know this cam would fit beforehand) |
1 Attachment(s)
Next up timing components along with the lifters and lifter trays ...
|
2 Attachment(s)
Time to add some heads . We used a Cometic .045 thick MLS gasket on this build. A OEM head gasket would have been cheaper, as these are overkill, but I wanted to set the quench at .040" since the pistons sit out of the hole .005", and there are no GM gaskets that thin.

Didn't get pictures of the oil pan and timing cover installation , but we just used the old stuff after some clean up of course. Time for the removal of the original 5.3 and the addition of around an extra 150 rwhp !!!

Engine back in a finishing up a few odd and ends ...
Added a later model L96 truck intake and 50lb flex injectors in case we wanted to go with E85 fuel down the road . We also ended up adding a Circle D 3200 stall speed and some 1-3/4 ; headers, Y pipe w catalytic converter delete pipe . We also used on of my Borla mufflers for some added airflow and louder HOT ROD sound of course . Doesn't look like 500+ hp now does it :) |

Time for a quick base tune .
And the 1st test drive down the block....woo hoo.......... |
All good looks like your boy is in tune on his project. gonna be nice little ripper, thanks for sharing.

So back to our regular scheduled programming ..
Will be updating progress now that I have some time . So finally was able to get the trunk detailing done . Added some dark base color . The pics look glossy and sort of Black in color, but it looks much flatter and more Grey when fully dried . I had purchased some trunk splatter paint from one of the big resto shops for use in a spray gun , but it just would flow right no matter how large tip I used . I then experimented trying to add the splatter look. Used this old siphon style wand gun at very low psi ( 5-7 psi) we used for cleaning out heater ducting at the dealership I worked at . Ended up spraying some epoxy paint from a spray can into a plastic cup and addingsome reducer to thin it out . The final trick was to HEAVILY over reduce the paint so it flowed out to mimic the factory spotting style. Of course I figured it out as I went along so the look I was trying to achieve got better towards the end . But the finished product will work for a non concourse build and honestly back then who knows how well the cars were done from one to the other :) |
