You need a cool name for your car! Hmm....
Midas
All Gold Everything
Certified Gold Standard (NorCam)
Gold Digger
Golden Gate Camaro
Bold Gold
Heavy Metal
King Tut's Camaro
Gold Means Go!

Meh some are better than others haha

chevyman0429 10-14-2020 11:50 AM

The gold standard.

Chuck_Burg 10-14-2020 02:12 PM

Thanks guys but I’ve already named it “The Prospector”. I will most likely have the name written in a Victorian Era Gold Leaf script on the rear blackout panel. I explained the reasoning for the name in an earlier post. I think an old 49er Prospector is fitting given the gold on gold....

NorCam 10-14-2020 02:37 PM

Great name. Can't wait to see the color on it.

scuncio 10-14-2020 02:48 PM

Body fit looks really nice. Looking forward to seeing it in paint.

Chuck_Burg 10-14-2020 03:58 PM

Thank you! As previously mentioned this car was a "survivor". It only has 54k miles on it. Even the original body bushings are in decent shape. All sheet metal is original to the car except the passenger fender and header panel. I still have the original hood which is dent free and very straight! The doors on this car have never been removed.

Here are the 15x4s I bought on eBay a couple years ago. They were rough to say the least. The hoops were too far gone but I opted to "save" the wheels and continue the restoration. Unfortunately we had to replace the hoops and they're a little different than the originals used by Cragar. That said I am very pleased with the result, even though it cost me an arm and a leg... Pictures just don't do this polish and chrome work justice.

Feast your eyes on Prospector Gold! They painted the car yesterday. All I can say is the metal guy did an amazing job! The prep guy did a great job blocking the car! The car didn't take much blocking. It was primed three times in total. The final scuffing resulted in sanding through the primer in a few spots which had to be spotted.... That's how thin the primer is on this car. The painter did a great job. I am very fortunate to be in a position where I could see the progression of the job and be able to communicate with everyone involved. I'm sure I drive them a little crazy sometimes:grin:

Zedder 10-16-2020 09:57 PM

Love it!

Chuck_Burg 10-16-2020 09:58 PM

Thanks Mark! The first two pictures are just the base gold, no clear.

Zedder 10-16-2020 10:03 PM

A lot of people don’t like gold 67’s, but I think they look awesome! Can;t wait to see it with the Cragars

Thanks everyone! I am very happy with the outcome. Can't wait to see the hood done.

Too Many Projects 10-22-2020 01:15 AM

Dang, just read the whole thread. You're painter is a true professional. When you can see the reflection of the individual tubes in the lights without them being fuzzy, there is VERY,VERY little orange peel in the paint and clear. Better than some pro jobs I've seen AFTER cut and buff !!!

Now that they have practiced on yours, when can I bring mine down ?? 1967 ss/rs in the same Granada Gold. I'll take the same mix code you have, love the color and depth.

My car, also, came for the Bay area 16 years ago with the same rust holes in the rear window, except mine was neglected and took out the entire trunk pan. Maybe all that silicone actually did slow down the rust spread...:hmmm:
My left front fender had a "whiskey" (love that description) dent deep in the front edge too. I searched for quite a while to come up with an NOS rs fender and then drove 1800 miles rt to get it. Crazy what we do for our cars.

Good read and look forward to more progress.

Chuck_Burg 10-22-2020 09:54 PM

Thanks for the kind words. I agree, the painter did a great job! It really doesn't even need to be sanded other than a little dirt in the clear.

The true hero of this is definitely the body man. To find a guy in his mid 30s who knows how to metal finish must be very rare. I'm lucky he wanted to do the job and to make the experience that much better, there's no ego with him. Very humble, no drama, no excuses, just yes I can do it or no I can't do it. His honesty is what drove me to hunting down the NOS fender, since he told me fixing the original would require too much bondo.

I'd like to see pictures of your 67. I think I could get you the formula. It's all PPG. Not sure it's dead nuts Granada Gold, almost looks too "gold" but it's beautiful. We matched as best we could to the original lacquer. In my opinion this looks way better!

You're right on the bodyman being 1 of 2 hero's. I "thought" the guy who worked on my '66 Chevelle as a bodyman too, but all he was is a bondo artist and not all that good with that either, but that's a different nightmare.

I've owned my Camaro for about 15 years and built it back to a driver from the basket case it was. Unfortunately, I got side tracked with MANY other cars and projects for 13 years and finally pulled it into the shop for the trunk floor replacement about 16 months back. In the midst of that we, found a different place to live and moved, so it got put together enough to self load on the trailer and hasn't been touched since.

Couple pics of the left fender after all the bondo was soaked off.

It's no supercar, so I hesitate to start a build thread, but it was taken down to the bare firewall and all rust removed. Subframe powered coated, al new power disc brake conversion, new 350 engine, m21, yada, yada, yada. I did jam the clip parts with ppg single stage Granada before assembly and only having a little left of the pint, sprayed it out on the front panel, hood and cowl panel. It's a nice color, but I like that you have this in a close match with the bc/cc and yes, I think it may be a "richer" shade of gold.

NorCam 11-22-2020 06:47 PM

Saw this 67 on Facebook today and it made me think of your car. Perhaps a little Day 2 inspiration of sorts.

Love it! I've read the article about that car. Somewhat of a survivor L78 old street race car with one repaint.

Looks like I'm getting some more color on the car today!

Bumble Bee ??

scuncio 11-24-2020 12:27 AM

That gold L78 is insane. As close to perfection as you can get. I'm sure your car will turn out just as choice as that benchmark!

More Updates... I can now say FINALLY, the paint is complete! The hood was the final piece to be painted and also kind of like the crown of the car, a very important piece of what I envisioned for years! As you all know this car is in a production body shop, NOT a restoration shop. This has both pros and cons. Luckily there are some very talented individuals working here, however nobody wanted to make the template for the stinger stripe. I was telling my dad about my the dilemma of finding someone to lay down the stripes. He just said, "No problem, I'll do it for you." Wow I mean I know this guy can do pretty much everything so what would make this any different. Possibly the only guy to ever stripe a stinger hood while wearing a suit :haha:. Pretty awesome memory for me :cool2:

When it was all said and done, he asked how it looked.... it's freaking awesome! Every time I look at the hood I'll have the moment to think about this, and that's priceless.

Also got an email a few days back that Moser Engineering is offering a 12% off Black Friday discount so I went with another one of their complete 12 Bolt rears. Multi leaf perches, Wavetrac differential, 35 spline bolt in axles, Timken bearings, powder coated housing, 1350 U Joint pinion yoke, and 4.10 gears... I'll be using the stock drum brakes in the rear. I was going to go with a Mark Williams unit but it would be about $1000 more, I don't think this thing will get enough abuse to substantiate the difference in cost. I had good luck with Moser in the past.

Totally digging that hood, and love that your dad came over and striped it while wearing his suit. Very cool memory for both of you I am sure. Love the whole choice on the diff too. :worship:

Chuck_Burg 11-28-2020 10:07 PM

Thanks guys! Next week it'll be getting sanded and polished, then we'll remove the fenders. We'll then remove the subframe and rear end. As I mentioned earlier, the floors are very nice on this car! I will just clean them as best as possible. When I bought the car, I was amazed at their condition.

markinnaples 11-30-2020 04:08 PM

That looks spectacular, and there's nothing better than working with your dad on a project. None of us is here forever, so there's something to be said for having something tangible that you can always look at and remember those times. Can't wait to see it complete.
