Finally a garage - lighting experiences
3 Attachment(s)
So I did the square footage, ceiling height, etc in a couple of lighting estimators online a while back and they estimated I needed between 30 and 36, 5000 lumin lights. I decided to put in 3 circuits of 3 outlets in the center of the main bay so a total of 9 which I can run 4 lights easily from each equaling the 36 required. I hung six of the lights to assist in my work schedule as once dark I was on portable lighting to do any work after sundown.
I believe if I put up all 36 lights I am going to be doing the a clark griswold when he turns on the exterior christmas lights on christmas vacation movie. Blinding and the local power company calling immmediately afterwards. Is this others experience as well?? here are a couple pics. It was pitch black outside when these were taken. |
Cool beans Bill. My experience..........you-----can-----not----have----too----much-----lighting! When you put stuff in there, it will absorb light and create shadows. Placement of the lighting is critical to minimize shadowing which is a pain to work in.

Thx |
The lights are 4' LED, motorola brand, I believe it was 4700 lumins each. you can link them together for longer lengths.
Yes, 6" 3600psi concrete. I have not decided what to do with floor yet, what are you thinking? Because of the size, everything I see is quite expensive. I can tile or carpet it for the price of epoxy coatings and such from what I see so far. lol.. |
Just a suggestion but I've been using Racedeck flow-thru tiles for years now. I've done a couple garage's in these 12" snap in tiles and people always comment how much they like the designs and how nice they are to walk on. Usually I add a two tone colored border and/or a inlaid design or two using silver, graphite and black tiles but these come in multiple colors. They run about $2.50 a square foot and are easy to pattern, design and install on any floor. Amazon has free shipping on these for Prime members or Race Deck ships direct from Utah at reasonable rates.

I have looked at epoxy but now just considering a dye in the concrete with a sealer applied. Looking at options next week.
I’m curious how much power you have in your garages in terms of amps? Also do you heat and cool, if so any suggestions on systems? |
You can do radiant in the slab if you haven't poured it yet - it is a beautiful heat that you feel through your whole body and you can run it with a gas on demand water heater if you have natural gas in the street or use propane.

I thought my buddies garage was insane this is on the next level. Very Very Nice!! What are your plans for the inside? |
Sorry, I am a little slow at responding here.
Crush, I have different issues here for cooling and heating than you in michigan. So far I have nothing on my building except for super well insulated. R21 garage doors with seperation between metal inside/outside panels, R11 roofing insulation on outside of roof sheating are two that are huge. I was in my small attic space yesterday with 108 outside it was 88 inside and underside of sheathing was not hot to the touch at all. I open doors for an hour or so at night to let cool night air in and its holding it pretty well through the day so far. Eventually I will put AC on it but it won't take much to keep cool. I don't worry about heating for the most part in the desert. My family says I built a big yeti but that was sort of the idea. Bernhard, It is just a plain work shop, garage, storage on inside. No extravagant plans for show or anything. I have trailers, cars, tractors, and other toys to consume space below. Loft will have a desk area and the rest storage for all the items that clutter your floor space usually below. Thanks for all the encouragement! I will get up some more pics soon. |
New garage flooring

Getting some flooring into the building. Commercial carpet on the loft/storage area, full flake epoxy stuff on garage floor areas and stem walls, and vinyl plank looks like wood but supposed to be very durable and water resistant for the living areas. vinyl is dirty in pic but you get the idea..
|
Looks great! What brand of vinyl did you use?
|
Looks very nice Bill. Looking real cozy in there. I think your Deuce will be quite happy in there!

The vinyl plank is from costco and the brand is Golden Arowana. Went in fairly easy and price was cheap when compared to other vendors. There is nicer for sure but this is a guest house so it will work great for my use.
Funny thing, I dropped 96 boxes on my 3/4 ton duramax. just so happens that is about 3300 pounds. Single rear tires did not like that one bit.. I don't recommend it.. |
Thanks! I have looked at the racedeck that has a wood floor look . I’m almost done w mine and will post pics soon
