Great stories for sure! I now own a '69!Camaro that ran in SS/D as "Shangri-La" by Barry Curran and Bob Moon. Mine had a couple different paint jobs and was originally raced in SS/H as "Super Paranoia" by Bill Izykowski.....ring a bell? Did you ever race against it? I know it went to Indy, Gators and lots of divisionals. Man!, I hope you find your car! I'd search EVERY '69 Camaro race car you can for that elusive serial number!!! And, I PRAY no scumbag "recreates" your car now that the VIN and Yenko paperwork are public knowledge!!! I REALLY HOPE THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN!!!!!
Thanks for sharing your life with us,

FYI, If someone here can find the thread about the 69 ebay z28 with orange z stripes that was actually a 69 yenko camaro. I know people where scrambling and the seller did not know it was a yenko, someone tried making a deal after the auction ended. The seller was a stand up guy and still sold it to the auction winner for the bid price. The car went somewhere in Illinois. And i think brian henderson might remember something about this car/auction. Roger

Gary-

Randy Bentley from the Salem area had a '69 Yenko Camaro that he turned into a bracket car in the mid-to-late 80's. I was told he didn't know it was a Yenko car until much later, possibly after he sold it? It was also supposedly a Marv Minneman car. That's all the more I know. Just a thought---

Randy, I think you are talking about the Fathom green Camaro I bought from a guy in Columbiana. It was a bracket car and originally from Minneman. Tom

Gary, we all appreciate a great story, thanks! Its also nice to see another drag racer on here as well, my story is some what similiar, my drag racing started in high school with a 68 Z28 with a L88 installed by an engineer from the GM proving grounds, actually thats what started it all........

Re: Where is 69 Yenko Camaro 124379N663539

Thanks to all for the kind comments.

It has been a GREAT run that started with the Yenko and I am still playing with cars. As Jeff Boone mentioned I currently have an NHRA stocker which just happens to look like a Baldwin MOTION Camaro (have to spread the love). My stories, are all true to the best of my recollection, were just the beginning of my affection with cars and are the highlights of some of the best times.

Just so there are no misconceptions and I apologize if I gave the wrong impression because I did not mean to. When I sent my original message to Charlie, I just wanted to update the registry regarding my original Yenko, regarding where it was purchased and which transmission it had. The stories were just fun for me and I hope for all of you to enjoy as a young kid talking about all the fun he had back in the day. Unfortunately, I am in not in a financial position to re-buy this car if in fact it was found. After putting two children through college and retiring from the General before I wanted to, there is no way I could afford an original car such as this one. If and when it is found, I wish the new owner all the best and if they would want to have not only the car, but the original price label, I would be more than willing to discuss it.

Thanks again,
Gary Merrick

Hi Dave,

My second 69 Camaro that I ran in Super Stock beginning in late 1976 I ran as a SS/H (396-325HP). Unfortunately, I don't remember any of your car's former owners. I ran the car a little bit on the east coast, but not a lot. I also ran it as a 396-375 HP in SS/FA with cast iron heads and SS/EA with the original aluminum closed chamber heads (I still have one here, somewhere) and then in 1985 moved it up to SS/DA 427-425 HP and set the record in Englishtown in May of 1986.

Good Times for sure. Do you still have the car?

Bill S,

I set that record for SS/DA in 1986, not 76, at 9.87 @ 135.13. We had been quicker than that at Delmar, Delaware earlier that year, but Division 1 Tech would not allow me to tear down for that record. That was another story all in itself (LOL), we were also #1 Qualifier at that race if my memory serves me correctly.

F/SA Buick GS, test and tune 68 Chevelle. This engineer worked at the Mesa proving grounds. My 68 Z28 was the terror of the town, in the late 70s in high school this car ran 11.30s on marginal slicks @ a 2130 foot altitude track, and it could have been a lot faster if I only knew...........

All,

These are the pictures of my current car. It is an NHRA Stocker, 402-375 HP 1970 Camaro, which currently is a B/SA (B Stock Automatic) and has to weigh a minimum of 3570 lbs. The NHRA Index for this class is 11.25 and the National Record is 9.91 @ 132.30 MPH, held by a gentleman from New Jersey.

Re: Where is 69 Yenko Camaro 124379N663539

Here are some pictures of my Yenko Clone project. I started this project in the early 2000's with the purchase of a nice body and my plan was to make the car into my YENKO recreation. I planned on making it look just like my original with the LeMans blue, but build it as a legal NHRA Super Stock that would fit into the SS/AA category that in my opinion would run in the 8 second zone with a legal L88 style engine built to NHRA specifications. As you will see by the pictures and in my opinion it turned out as the car I envisioned. I have to give credit where credit is due. Mike Pustelny from Almont, Michigan fabricated the chassis and Todd Frantz from Louisville, Kentucky applied the paint where he works at Lambert Auto Body. I completed the car with all the wiring, plumbing, and getting it to run. The engine in the picture is a bracket engine that I put in just to make sure everything worked as designed. GM

Re: Where is 69 Yenko Camaro 124379N663539

Just a couple more.

Since I am sure you all are wondering, why I am racing the 70 instead of the 69, the answer is simple. In order to finish paying for my daughter's college education, the 69 Yenko re-creation had to be sold, so without much hesitation, I sold the 69 in the fall of 2014. By that time, I had accumulated about 90% of the legal engine parts, so the whole package is now in Oklahoma. I keep in touch with the buyer and his family and I am assured that it will see the track next year. Should be fun to watch, not as much as driving it, but fun none the less. I did get to make a couple shake down runs with the car with the bracket engine and it was everything that I expected.

Thanks Bill,

I really enjoy building race cars. I try to hide things as much as I can, whether it be wiring or brake lines, or whatever.

I have known Mike Pustelny for over 30 years, back when he raced the 70 Mustang, (SS/J I think), and he is still the same guy today. The blue Camaro was a work of art that he performed. The right side seat came out with two dzus fasteners, the shifter came out with 1 quick release pin, and the transmission tunnel came out with a couple of dzus fasteners also, which made the transmission very accessible. He also wanted to make the instrument panel come out with a couple of dzus fasteners, but I told him that I don't plan on running a manual transmission, so really did not need that option. He hand made the steering column, but looking at it, it looks like the stock piece. The underneath of the car was awesome also, it had a 4 link rear suspension, Ford 9 inch rear that he custom made and the car was all chromoly round tubing. He had tons of hours in it and like you said he was very reasonable. He told me, he would never do another Camaro like that one. He is a definitely a class act and for those people that don't know, he was the real God Father of the new COPO Camaros, Mustang Cobra Jets, and the Dodge Drag Pacs, he built all of those prototypes for the big 3.

Thanks for the compliments.
