Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

Thanks guys! Now I'm over- the- top motivated to get the old gal in paint! So, it's onto the bodywork! I'm starting into it now that the metal work is all done. The first thing I'm tackling is to fill all the pitting in the trunk. I saved the floor, but it's like the surface of the moon! And guess what? I live in Houston, and we gots a friggin' problem over here! I figured I'd hit that a little each day so I don't burn myself out too quickly. Meanwhile, I started to get a game plan together on the rest of the car. I figured I'd go deep, punt early, then pull a hat trick and slide into home! I'm not sure what I just said made any sense, but it sure made this post longer!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...002_172246.jpg

More this week as I get into reconstructing the lost and dented up bodyline on the quarter panels!

Cheers

Ran into Phil last night and we both agree you need to get hoppin' on this project looking forward to your posts on the progress too. Here is hoping you do not have to take to many trips that interfere with this project, sometimes work can be a problem, but not for me anymore.

Good luck

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

Thanks guys! Sorry for the delay on the reply. That whole work thing getting in the way again, Mike But vacation is underway and it's time to get some bodywork done! First step, body line rebuild!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...008_071953.jpg
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...004_102050.jpg
I started by taping off the dull remnants of the factory stamping. I then used some body glaze and tapered a very slight skim coat across the tape. Removing the tape revealed a very small ridge which I knocked down with 180. This is a very small amount of glaze. Just enough to get that crisp line back!

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

So....break out the old primer gun, spill a cup on the floor, clean that up, then fill up another cup and lay down a few heavy coats.
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...008_072732.jpg
I'm pretty happy with the initial results. Now it's onto the other side! And some more trunk sanding and filling. Ugh....I'm glad I saved the floor, but this is more work than just replacing it!

I ain't buyin' it. You know another guy that has buddy pass access! Dust removal? Well, other than the lbs. of it in my nose, I use my shop vac after a pile builds up, then at the end of the day, spend about :30 minutes vacuuming up the floor and finish up with the bucket and mop. Once a week, I'll open the doors up and use my leaf blower when there is a good breeze and clear out the shop: shelves, tools, walls, neighbors. And that helps keep it under control. I know. ...I'm a freak

Not much more to see except a couple more days worth of blocking, which looks exactly like it did before except a little less bumpy. man....I hate block sanding and take a GOOD long look at those quarter panels. Flat? Yep. Curved? Yuh-huh. Convex, Ogee, Ess, obtuse? All of the above! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...010_084429.jpg

This side is now at 220. I'll jump on the other side tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have the whole car crisp and sanded to 220 by the end of the week. Stupid Bob and his awesome show demanding excellence!

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

Rain today here in the Houston area, so I decided to keep the doors shut and tackle the brake and clutch quadrant as well as blast the bumper brackets. So step one, take a lot of pictures. There's a lot of small parts on this thing and they can go any which way! Notice the mark on the spring. That's an inspection mark of some sort, but I don't know what it signifies exactly. Might be a B-Body or Plant specific thing. Either way, it'll go back on!
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...3-dscn1768.jpg
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...4-dscn1769.jpg

So with it all disassembled, I blasted all the parts and then started to detail it up. And with only 53K miles on it, the clutch and brake pedal pads were in surprisingly great shape so for now, I just cleaned them up with some conditioner and used some stainless polish on the pedal trim.

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...5-dscn1770.jpg
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6-dscn1773.jpg
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0367-quad2.jpg
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0368-quad3.jpg
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0369-quad4.jpg

And yes, I built that little stand. I know! You want one too? Everyone needs a clutch and brake pedal quadrant stand!!! I'll wrap this up in some plastic for safe storage until I take it out for reassembly. Meanwhile, I'm shipping out the wiper motor to get done. That takes about 6 weeks, so I'm thinking something in December I'll have that back. OK, more blocking tomorrow!!!

Cheers

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

OH, and I fogot to mention the Quarters. No, it's not something that a line worker left in there. It's a simple way to remove the clutch spring. An old trick I learned from an old hotrod guy. With the clutch pedal retracted in the "up" position, the spring is extended. Use washers, or in my case, money since I'm just swimming in cash ( ) and when you retract the spring it holds it's extended shape making removal easy. OK, so today was a good day. The driver's side is coming along, but I'm still not 100% happy with that mid-quarter body line. It's still a little soft for my liking. And I know how picky Bob is, so I'll have to work on that a little (a lot) more. I'll take than on tomorrow. I think by the end of the week I'll be sitting in 320 and then it'll be time to get the pencil out and start the final look over!!!!! WOO-HOO!!!!! Thanks, guys! I'm getting excited and nervous since paint is looming!!!!! I can't wait to lay down the funk, but at the same time, nervous as all get out to do it

Ryan, I back up all my vacation into October so I have it all off. It's about the only month in Houston where it doesn't feel like we're 3ft from the sun and submerged in the Atlantic with 1000% humidity!!! So I take advantage of that by making sure I have the whole free for car stuff (cruises, shows).

Just remember, any little bit you do gets you one step closer to the final product no matter how little you think it is.

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

I had someone email me asking how much I've spent so far on the paint and body at the shop I'm using. I first replied slandering this "Shop" for wasting valuable time by taking photos of themselves and posting them online!!!! But, since the shop is me and I don't get paid, I don't tend to keep track of my hours but for some weird reason I did on this one. So let's see...I'm at 175hrs of bodywork so far on the car plus an additional 40hrs of metal work. I probably have another 40hrs left, minimum, on the bodywork. As a highly skilled Five Star AAA (or is that AA??) rated bodyman, I charge $50/hr labor rate. Your shop's labor rate may be different. So that's....um....uhhhhh.....two...carry the one....denominator..... And all the materials is PPG, and they're pretty proud of their stuff, so that's a punch to the purse. And who the heck knows what else I'm missing in there?! So the answer is "priceless"!!!!!

Yesterday I got the soft bodyline above the driver's rear wheel well nice and crisp and the rest of the car is alomst there. Better pics of that later today. I seam sealed all the areas that needed it: door/trunk skins, trunk drip rails, quarter panel/door jambs, etc. I'll shoot another primer round this morning, and then start with 320 and the guide coat (a second time) today. And I'll be back for more trunk work this afteroon too! I wasn't happy with the front wheel lips, so I spent yesterday redoing those as well. Did I already mention I'll never ever ever NEVER EVER EVER NEVER do another Coronet agian???

I'm about 95% done with the trunk. What looked like the surface of the moon now resembles more of the Desert SW with an occasional Meteor Crater. Almost done with this!

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-dscn1808.jpg

Also, after about 6hrs, I went back and used some blue painter's tape to mark any dimple, scratch, flaw I could find and as you can see. I found a lot!!! Someone at the shop complex asked me what all the tape marks are for and I said, "Flaws that I need to fix." His comment was, "Where? I see the tape, but what's it marking?" I had to show him what I was seeing with my flaw eyes and he laughed. He said I was nuts then put a "Needs Help" sticker on my forehead. And, I agree, I do need help. But I still need to fix the flaws!!!

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...0-dscn1811.jpg

I did figure a way to minimize this problem. Put a nice 5lb sledge hammer blow into the side of the quarter panel. People will be so shocked at that, they'll look past all the other things!!!!! Hmmm Maybe I better not do that....

More next week!

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

Dave,

I remember when I had a big repair on my 59 Impala (everything below the mid-body trim moulding on the passenger side), the body guy let me help and I block sanded the hell out of that thing only to find the most minor imperfection here and there. When I pointed one of them out to him, he told me to run my hand across the top of the fender where it was factory smooth. It wasn't at all. After the paint, clear and wet sanding, it was perfectly smooth. Better than the factory.

I'm sure you car will be spectacular when done. Thanks for spinning some humor into what appears to be a major addiction around here.

Re: "The Beater Bee" becomes "The Better Bee"

Alrighty....the past few days have been productive. The production that has gone on over the weekend is a product of producing a proactive productivity-related protificated providence. In other words, I got a lot o' crap done! I was able to spray the entire car in dip gray primer. I'm very happy with the result since most of the heavy pitting has been filled in and it starting to look like a restored car again!

I shot the engine bay, the trunk, the whole interior, and the underside to include the wheel wells and under the fenders. My goal was once the overspray is done, and then the undercoating in the wells, where ever there isn't V2 Hemi Orange, you will see the color of the primer from where the car was submerged in the dip tank. Hence the name, dip primer. I tried to get all the nooks and crannies all over so it appears as if the car was dipped and not sprayed. As you can see, this is a big project and a big process so I decided the break this whole paint process up over the course of 4 days. Up next will be the overspray with Hemi Orange!!!!
