Agreed I really think its going to POP! Had to take a week off from sanding no skin left on the tips of my fingers. That EDP coating needs to be removed. I found lots of surface rust under it. Some spots it just flaked off. Probably spending way to much time on the bottom of the car.

jlbucky 04-03-2022 01:47 AM

I know how your fingers feel, I did bodywork for 25 years. I always felt I could get away with a lot of crimes, if that was my prerogative, because I rarely had finger prints on my fingers.

Spent Saturday messing around with some lace panels for the 55 roof. Utilizing black skylight base I applied the gold base over the lace. Then tried a couple of coats of yellow and red candy. I think i’m just going to stick with the gold base and no candy. Still pegging the fun meter blocking the car out!

dykstra 04-18-2022 11:33 AM

Super cool!!

Too Many Projects 04-18-2022 01:37 PM

That will be cool. Maybe just a little flake in the gold to make it glitter in the sun ?

Chuck_Burg 04-19-2022 11:48 PM

I am so excited to see the lace job!!!!!

Oh so close to color. Onto second round of block sanding!

"Probably spending way to much time on the bottom of the car."

Probably not. I did not track my time on my Camaro. If I had to guess, probably 200 to 250 hours in the floor.

jasonL78 04-26-2022 01:53 PM

Agreed I spent way to much time on the bottom side. It wasn't that bad as the floor and trunk pans were all new. Being the only person sanding taping and painting makes it even longer. But it will be worth it in the end.

I am sure a pro could have done it more quickly. More like 100 2.5 hour days. Although some weekends I may have spent an 8 or 10 hour day on it. I had just read Ron Fornier's book on sheet metal work. Can't remember the title. I was determined that there would be no visible welds, seams or hammer marks and no bondo.

The tunnel had been butchered by a previous owner to install a ram rod shifter. There were some rust spots I had to cut out and replace. I made the patch panels from scratch, and was determined that there would be no welds or hammer marks showing and no bondo.

There was some carnage to the tunnel just above the axle where it looked like a floor jack slipped while the drive shaft was out. Had to heat and shrink it with hammer and dolly. That meant I needed an assistant on the other side holding a dolly. People that look at it on a lift don't believe I did any patch work. And I did achieve my goal: there is no bondo and no sign of any work. Although, I admit, that if one were to pull the carpet and the underlayment, they would find a few of the welding seams visible from the top. I had to cut the passenger side seat mounting pad off to correctly work the metal under it, then weld it back on. I also went to great lengths to replicate the color, which was NOT uniform. Very dark gray toward the front of the car, and pretty light gray toward the rear.

Like I said, I didn't track my time. Probably would have been too depressing.

You can see some of the floor pics in post one here: https://www.yenko.net/forum/showthre...d+pics+project

Sorry for the hijack, but the question was asked.

Cant wait to see this color on the outside of the car! This is with the semi-gloss clear!

Too Many Projects 05-23-2022 03:16 AM

WOW, I would be tempted to paint the top with gloss clear from seeing that. It would look like a polished brick of gold...

Mr70 05-23-2022 02:46 PM

Very sharp!...Reminds me of this Gold '55 I was reading about last winter.

The 50 millionth GM vehicle produced.

Spent all weekend painting. The car is eating base coat. Already down 3 quarts and will most likely need another gallon to finish the car. Inner doors and door jams all painted along with the firewall. You can really see the difference between the satin and the gloss clear on firewall. Really changes the color. The satin clear almost leaves a pearl like appearance.

Cannot wait to see this out in the sun shining like a new penny. Love it.

Another productive weekend! Trunk, Core support, front valance and core support panels all painted and cleared. You can really see the difference in the color with the clear and satin clear on front valance panel. The clear is split, back behind grill gloss in front of grill satin. Hopefully some outside panels next weekend.

Lots of hurtles with this one. I painted the black base late Saturday and figured I would let it set overnight with having to tape on it. I had my sides all laid out I throw the lace panel on the roof and in the dead center one of the Diamonds is ripped and torn. So I called my better half. We assessed the situation and cut the diamond out and re-glued another diamond from a spare piece of lace back onto the panel. Not knowing if the reducer would react with the glue I rolled the dice. I thought I had the lace panel tight enough and I was far enough away with the gun but the panel rippled. My wives eyes were the size of quarters when I looked at her. I just ran with it because there was no turning back now. In the end it all worked out and everything was fine. We were both very surprised when we lifted the lace panel off.

As you can see here the lace is black with the hole or rip. The other picture is the diamond we cut out of the lace panel I used for my test panel.

Love the gold and the old school lace painting. This is going to be epic when it's done.
