Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Is the Chevelle engine using the same cam, heads, intake, exhaust as the Camaro? If not then it needs to be tuned to the engine its bolted to..

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Ignition advance not working or vacuum advance hooked up improperly?

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

I honestly don't know. Cam heads and intake are all different. I'm just trying to find the easy way out. I think I'm going to have to put the Camaro on the back burner while I learn how to do it, because my dad isn't all that good at tuning carbs (his words, not mine).

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

I should note we tried to tune the carb with my grandfather once, but it didn't work very well.

Post some data.

Degrees of initial timing at idle without vac adv hooked up?

total timing @ 3000 rpm without vac advance hooked up?

timing at idle with vac advance hooked up?

What pulgs? Plug gap? What distributor? Any ignition box?

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

I'll have to ask. I just know i has an Accel distributor (MSD cap. No ignition box.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

I found an old distributor in the garage. It has an Accel cap, but apparently it's the original points distributor for the Camaro. Part Number HI HI2168 8b1 (or 3b1, or 3BL, or 8BL, I can't tell). Will this work on a small block. Pappaw said it was big block specific, but I don't know why it would be. He's got a 350 in his garage I plan on using in whatever car I get, and I'd really like to save 200 bucks by using this. (Y'know, so I can put said cash towards a tunnel ram for said 350. 1112168 should be the number on it...350 SBC

Appears to be it. Makes we wonder what it was doing on a 396.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8910/overview/ Will this work with the Camaro's Accel distributor? I ask because it says it's for MSD Blaster ignition, which the car doesn't have.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

What speakers are recommended for the Camaro? Speakers in it are horrid (only one works, and it's got loads of static)

Also, bit of an update. The intake is stripped where the bolt goes in on the rear driver's side. My grandfather said to get some stuff called thread mender. but nothing came up on Google.

Bolt for the Carb I mean.

Joe -- that may work for a period of time, but the best thing to do is install a Heli-Coil insert. You should be able to find a kit at any good parts store. TAZ

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Plan on it, since netiher AutoZone or O'Reilly's have thread mender, but I know for a fact O'Reilly's has Heli-Coils.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

This is very odd. It certainly moves like it's supposed to, but spews carbon monoxide at idle.

I'll take it!

Found a Midas Muffler receipt from the 80s with the then-owners name. Sent him a facebook message. Here's hoping I can find out more about the car.

Finally got around to uploading pics (of pics) of the Chevelle's mural. Not on it anymore (I like it more without.)

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

This is depressing. My dad's buddy came over last night to show dad the Mustang he bought. He's done bodywork, and while we were in the garage, he noticed the guy who restored the Camaro forgot to wheel out the paint, making it look cloudy. I don't have the experience nor the money to have it done. It doesn't show up in pictures, but it's really noticeable with fluorescent lighting on the trunk (usually when I'm in the garage at night.

Above are pictures from October of 2004. This is what it looked like with Rally wheels. They were replaced when the tires they were on were dry rotted. And I seem to remember something else going wrong with them but I was 6 when they were replaced in 2005.
Pappaw actually wanted Torq Thrusts but if I remember rightly, I wanted the cragars (Muscle car wheels in my 6 year old mind, purely because they were 5 spoke) because that's what I saw in the tire shop we went to. I think he said this was sort of the look he wanted.

(Side note, he had the copy of CARS magazine this was in from 1967. I say had because he gave it to me. I love looking at all the old ads and articles.)

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Okay, the 396 doesn't exactly <span style="font-style: italic">feel</span> like a 396. My Christmas wish list thus far is:
Timing tab (This is why I couldn't tell you how it was set, it doesn't have one on it.)
Shift kit (TH400 feels a bit sloppy.)

Is there anything else I should think of? Carb just sorta quit acting up, and frankly, we don't have the money for a new one, nor do we really know how to rebuild one. I feel a shift kit and some timing adjustments could really wake it up.

earntaz 10-19-2015 12:59 PM

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Get the small things first ... get a bolt on timing tab and then locate the true TDC of #1 -- set the timing. The &quot;sloppy&quot; TH400 could be attributed to the poor tune of the engine -- accomplish a basic tune-up on the engine before doing the shift-kit deal. Eric on this site is the ACE with the Q-J carb. He can accomplish a basic rebuild or a &quot;show piece&quot; if you so desire. TAZ

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Ah, It's got a Holley 750. I don't know about this yet. Timing is my main concern, since it stopped bogging under throttle.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Crawled under the rear to get the code. It's completely covered in grease but the second letter looks to be A. It's a 12 bolt, meaning it'd have to be code QA, which means it came with 4.10 gears in it. Either they were swapped out, or it really isn't running right, because it certainly doesn't feel like it.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Cleaned the pad below the cylinder head. T0510TRH. So it's a 73-74 454 out of a pickup. Wow. Feels so weird. On the one hand, I'm sad it's not the original engine, on the other hand, oooh it's a 454. Also, I was wrong on the rear end. Not a 4.10. Was looking at the date coding and didn't give it a second thought. My bad.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

As for the &quot;sloppy 400&quot; you should consider installing one of the B&amp;M shift kits (around $90). I had the same problem in my Gramma's 1975 Firebird that we put the 455 in. The shifts were so mushy it felt like the tranny was going. After the shift kit install, the shifts are crsip and you know exactly when they occur. It chirps second and third now, too!

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Put the battery from my truck in it, started it... and the SOB was in reverse. Shifting= bad. If I hadn't slammed on the brakes, it would've gone into Dad's Harley and my '96 Dakota. On the bright side, I did this myself, and not a thing went wrong (other than the reversing outta nowhere). Shift kit is definitely possible. I've got a Hurst Pro-Matic 2 out in the garage and all it needs is a shift cable (Grandfather needed it for the Chevelle and bought a whole new shifter just for it.)

Pulled it out so Dad could get his Harley in the Winter position. Would've gone for a ride, but, whoever is in charge of the roads for the city had the roads salted already (No snow yet) and my truck was in the way and Dad didn't feel like swapping batteries more than was necessary.

All closed up for the next 5 months of frozen Hell. Unfortunately, we don't have a cover for the Chevelle.

Pulled the cover back and got the paint off of the waterneck. After a new pair of valve covers, I'll be proud to open the hood at car shows.

When you put new valve covers on it make sure to get photos of the casting numbers and dates of the heads!

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Not sure why, since it's not even the original engine. 'Tis a 454. But I'll get pics. Will be quite a while though.

Alright, but it will be a while- Most likely won't happen until at least Spring. Unless you mean a pic of the casting number for the block. Then I can get that one up tomorrow, but the heads will be a while.

Based on the intake and hump on the front of the heads, I'm betting they are not truck heads.

This may be a stupid question, but once we get it running right, how much race fuel can it safely run? It ran real good with a gallon of 110 mixed with 93.

Re: Grandfather's 68 SS Camaro.

Going to pick up a timing tab today. Or order it, at least. Maybe I'll be able to get Dad to work on it tomorrow after it gets here.
