Re: Yenko Deuce
If you soda blast the firewall, you stand a better chance of preserving the crayon markings. Anything to aggressive takes them out. Bill Edel's deuce had lots of marks.

Here are some updated pictures of the vin behind the Heater on the firewall, and pictures of some of Kenny's handy work installed hardened seats and bronze guides and some mild porting with 205 intake valves, etc.

Re: Yenko Deuce
Nice... If you are going with a non stock cam I fully recommend calling Dave Crower at Crower cams and giving him/them the engine and car specs and letting him design a solid roller for it... absolutely wicked.

Thank you for the input, Ken Maisano designs all the Cams that go in our engines, so we are covered : ) will post more pictures tonight. Scott |

Re: Yenko Deuce
I thought it would be interesting to see how well the factory Balanced the rotating assembly back in 1970.
So I took all the original parts, made my Bob Weight and spun up the crank. As you can see it was only off by 6 Grams in the front and 8 Grams in the back. I bet they gave the LT1 special attention. In the late 80s I blueprinted many brand new LB9s 350s and L69s 305 for GM special projects and many were off 8 to 14 grams. Thought you guys might like this info. Re: Yenko Deuce
Very nice Ken, My original crank was off about the same, will you metal-ax the block? I really like the pic of the pad stamping, I don't think we've seen another Deuce stamped like that! It is also very early with it being an 0512 (especially for a car being this late in the build order), most engine assy dates are 0520 with the range being pretty tight at 0518 - 0521.
Interesting stencil on the leaf spring, I'd have to see the underside of the spring to determine if they are original to the car or not. Also, I see the rear sway bar setup, it's nice that you have that item!! Pay special attention to cleaning the rear assy, many times there are crayon markings on the center section. |
Re: Yenko Deuce
Ken -- have you ever spun up one of the W-30 442 400/455 "select fit" engines? Just curious as to how close they were. TAZ

Re: Yenko Deuce
Is the yellow dot on steering box a decal or paint?

Re: Yenko Deuce
It's paint Bill. Dab

Re: Yenko Deuce
Scott and Ken...that car deserves the awesome attention that you are giving it. Your detail is impeccable. Congrats and continued success. Doug

Re: Yenko Deuce
Marlin..Good call on the Metal-ax machine. I'm surprised you know about that machine, most people don't. Back in the late 90s I was helping Paul Pfaff Racing Engines with some Pro Stock development and he just purchased one. I would vibrate Titanium valves and they would cut like butter! I always use that procedure on (Green, New) blocks ,heads ect. But the old stuff with all the heat cycles don't seem to move much.
TAZ, I have not check any OEM Olds Assembly's. Ken Maisano Mascar Detriot Muscle Cars |

That should be a yellow decal with a two letter code. On manual boxes it is a yellow two letter stamp. At least based on my experience. |
Re: Yenko Deuce
Thanks Ken ...

Re: Yenko Deuce
Hey Doug,
thank you for the comments, we are washing all parts with soap and water to carefully check for any and all markings, we will document everything. We did this with the Block, but saw nothing, however while Kenny was machining the block, the oils etc have brought out what appears to be some kind of marking in yellow on the side of the block ... a 5 or 6 or maybe even a yellow X ? Marlin the springs are absolutely original, we will get pictures of both sides when we take them apart and share with you. Hope you all have a nice day. |
Re: Yenko Deuce
The power steering has a yellow decal, not paint.
The yellow on the sides of the block will likely be the engine application code of 'CTC', typically written on both sides, in yellow crayon, upside down. I agree with you Ken, putting a block through the metal ax procedure after so many heat cycles normally doesn't 'relax' it very much but mine had a little bit of stress in it per the graph printout I received. In theory, I probably should have metal ax'd it after the machining was done.... |
Re: Yenko Deuce
As I blew the pic up ...I could see the outside edges of where the decal was.

Re: Yenko Deuce
Are you sure those springs are original?? Look like replacements to me just by the leaf clamps. Those don't look like OEM style leaf spring clamps. I still have my original springs on my survivor 70 Nova and they don't look anything like those. Maybe the clamps only were replaced??

Yes we are 100% sure, the car has been thoroughly inspected by Ken S of Deuce Heaven, Stefano B of Nickey's, Doug, and Ken M. unless they were replaced by the dealer on the lot, we are very certain they are original, we will double triple quadruple check when we take the rear end apart and wash and clean everything stay tuned. |
Re: Yenko Deuce
Going back to pg 6 and the trim rivets on the sides of the cowl,my Cranberry red deuce also has them and its VIN is very close-353534.

Re: Yenko Deuce
I have seen that same treatment with the rivets on a few 68-72 novas and a few 69 Camaros.. almost like they were doing a practice run before they did what they needed to

Heaven forbid -- that makes sense. Those rivet guns where probably a pain at times -- better to get it set before trying to set rivets around the windshield opening. TAZ |

Interesting, it's the first time I've seen that.... |
Re: Yenko Deuce
Great story! That engine assembly stamp is quite interesting! Normally when you see really odd assembly stamps it's a result of an engine that failed at some point on the line and was sent back to "heavy repair". This would usually result in a grind out of the original stamp and then restamped, which is obviously not the case here. Out of curiosity, how do the head/block cast dates line up?
Keep the pictures coming! Steve |
Re: Yenko Deuce
I will post several pictures of all dates and marking of the motor Monday or Tuesday

Re: Yenko Deuce
Nice pictures! In addition to the casting clock that is pictured on the engine block you should also have a alpha numeric code like on the heads, water pump, etc. Did you get a shot of that one?
Thanks |
Re: Yenko Deuce
Great pics, the dates of the components are exactly in line with other Deuces - especially the heads.
