Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
Before I traded my 70 Z28 in on the new 73 Z28 (see previous posts, above), I yanked the LT1 out of the 70Z, bought a 210hp 327 from a 67 Camaro, completely rebuilt it using an L79 cam, and dressed it with the intake, carb, and valve covers from the 70 Z, and installed it in the 70 Z. That's what it got traded in with, and whoever bought it thought they were getting an all original 70 Z
I had bought a beat up 69 Z28 in January of 73 to be built as a dedicated street/strip car. Frost green, green vinyl top, green deluxe interior, no hood, no grill, no engine or trans, wrinkled fenders, and (as I found out later) many pounds of Bondo included at no extra charge with the purchase price of $300. That's the M22 I bought from a 71 Corvette laying on the floor in front of the car. http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...9Z28/69Z_1.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...9Z28/69Z_2.jpg Rebuilt the 70 Z's LT1 using the 140 off-road cam, Edelbrock Tarantula intake, 750 DP Holley, Mallory dual point dist, put the M22 behind the Lakewood scatter shield, and dropped it in. Picture getting everything bolted together to drop into the engine compartment....obviously I had plenty of help on hand, including my bride-to-be on the far right.... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...9Z28/69Z_3.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...9Z28/69Z_5.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...9Z28/69Z_4.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...9Z28/69Z_9.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...Z28/69Z_10.jpg Raced the car in POS dress for a year or so. 13.00 dial-in was before I switched the orig 4.10 rear for a 4.88 and really started to get it dialed in. Eventually ran consistent 12.0's with a twice-best time of 11.98. Photos at Rockford Dragway, Byron IL, Sept 1973.... http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...8/69ZByron.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...9Z28/gated.jpg Tired of the ugliness, so had it prettied up a bit. This process is when the 'mucho bondo' was discovered....my good friend Fred who did the body & paint had over 300 hrs in bodywork http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...9Z28/69Z_6.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...9Z28/69Z_8.jpg http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i1...9Z28/69Z_7.jpg |

Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
I dug up this picture of the most 2nd gens I had in my driveway at one time. Early 80's, a summer morning before work.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a26...ps793daffe.png Left to right: 70 Z28 M22, still own 73 Z28 A/c 4 speed, it was a "restored" car in that it was a car that had the back half replaced due to an accident, the car was originally silver, great summer beater with the a/c and the 4 speed, sold in the mid 80's to Clark Barton of Phoenix, have NO IDEA of where it went 73 Z28 no air, 4 speed. Original paint low mile car that was driven back to the Detroit area, sold and painted grey in the mid 80's. Have no idea of where it is now 74 Z28 Type LT, 4 speed a/c. Super low mile car at the time (30k ish). I still have the original front plate for this car if anyone knows where it is, I do not |
Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
This was my 1st Nova. A 72 I bought from a buddy of mine for 250 bucks after he blew the engine. I built another small block and had a daily driver. Grenaded the rearend one morning and had another in it that afternoon (when your young you do that somehow). I pulled the limo tint and rebuilt the suspension front and rear completely which raised it alot! Someone had heated the springs before by buddy owned it. I got rearended waiting on a drawbridge to close over the Tennessee River and the little Nova was totaled.

Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
Here a a few pics of an AMX/3 that I used to work on for Dick Teague who was then VP of Styling at AMC. The Hornet in the pic is my mom's and the Duster was my dad's. Dick was a great guy, he used to tell me to go pick up my girlfriend in the car and take her out to dinner.

Cool car
Looks like my favourite modern car of all time, the GT Ford. |
Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
What was it like to drive that AMX/3? AMC should have built that thing; it is a great looking car.
|
Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
----I kind of think it looks better than a GT40 (either old or new) and I love GT40s. Love the lines up and over the rear wheels........Bill S
|
Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
It was actually a great driving car. Dick asked me to drive it down to Mansfield Ohio (from the Detroit area)
for a car show one time and it performed flawlessly except the AC was a little weak like a Pantera. Bill, Dick Teague like the lines over the rear as well, in fact so much that he used them on the Matador coupe. |
Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
I believe I read somewhere that there were three of them built. But AMC brass couldn't justify production given the state of the company.
|
Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
Altogether six were built (a seventh car was built from spare parts and surfaced several years after the program was cancelled). Here is a pretty good article: AMX/3
|
Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
Very nice read. Thanks! Do you know how many exist today?
|
Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
I believe all still exist. I remember there was one car which was not complete and from the last I heard it still is not. The other interesting fact I recall is that Dick ended up with a surplus of transaxles so he kept a few and sold the rest to Gratiot Auto Supply.

Interesting article, always been a fan of the AMX, my aunt had one when I was a kid. Never heard of the AMX/3, timelessly beautiful lines for sure, too bad it had bad timing.

New guy here, recently joined to do some research on some parts I have. Anyway, here is a pic of my first car, a 68 Chevelle L78 SS396. This is the only pic I have of it, circa 1974. When I bought it, it was a race car. Original bench seat 4 speed, manual steering, 4 wheel non power drum brakes, and factory 4.10's, which had been swapped out for 4.56's. Had way cool Tubular Automotive headers that wrapped around the front crossmember, Tarantula intake with the twisted carb, air shocks, ladder bars, line lock, Hurst Ram Rod vertical gate shifter, etc. Way too much car for a 16 yr old driver, combined with the piss poor drum brakes, I spun it out and crunched the left 1/4 pretty good. Ended up buying a 71 Chevelle SS454 LS5 car with a blown motor for $300 and swapping the whole drive train into it. Tried to sell the mint nose off the 68 for a while, finally just sold the shell to a junk yard. What a bummer, wasn't even that bad, needed a 1/4 and a trunk floor extension, had no idea what I had at the time.

Re: Vintage pics of muscle cars-post yours up here!!
Here's a picture of my L-79 Nova taken at Da Grove back in 68.........I dented the rear quarter backing into a telephone pole.........LOL.....What a dope!!.........anyhow.....the car ran a best of 11.73 back then....the problem I had was racing against Tony Christian.......he was .2 quicker......so.....I changed the intake set-up to a Single carb (from a cross ram) and the car would then run 12.10 all day long......The car also saw a lot of Street Action on Clybourn and Racine in Chicago.........I ended up getting the body repaired and put a Big Block with a Turbo 400 in it......So....Basically I ruined a L-79 Nova.........
