Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
The more I spend, the slower we go. Set the timing with a dial indicator today, had to install the flywheel without the key. Put the new belt on. Went to TnT.
We ran a 19+, a 20+ and another 20+. We only got three runs in. Engine runs rougher, clutch is no better. The second run was with the timing all the way retarded, third run had the timing all the way advanced. Higher rpm on the stand though, 6000+ when I pull the cable - goes nowhere at the line when there is a load. Fun factor is diminishing for both of us. Lots of help from the other Jr guys, but nothing looks wrong. Not sure what to do next. Did a leak down and compression test, both appeared fine. If I can get 5500 to 6000 rpm on the warm up stand I thought the engine was good enough for 13-14's. I have to come up with another plan. Plan B: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...herEngine1.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...herEngine2.jpg Had this in the basement for 10+ years for a go cart project, (longer than 8 year old Benjamin!). Turns out its a Raptor engine - which is the standard for 12.90 cars! Long story short, its on, it runs - nice (!), wide open idle was over 5,000 rpm ,and our impromptu street testing out front yielded a couple of nice launches!!! Benjamin is thrilled, I'm relieved - for the moment - and we are looking forward to the next oppotunity for TnT. Not to be skeptic, but I'm hoping for the best. http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...tinStreet1.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...tinStreet2.jpg |

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Well! We hit TnT this past Friday night: 12.69 @ 50+ mph!!! We pulled the weight bar out of the truck (that we've been hoping to need at some point!), and threw 25 #'s on it. The general ratio for a 12.90 Jr is 10 #'s = .10 et.
Got another run in, 12.79 at 50+ mph! The 25 pounds slowed it about a tenth, primarily in the 60 foot. We are going to leave it alone, as we feel the 64 degree temp with 72% RH will change for Sunday - which is supposed to be in the low 90's. We think the weather will slow us down to the 12.90+ range. This is a huge relief, Benjamin is all smiles - that's what its all about! Fast forward to Sunday morning: Right out of the box at 9:30am our first run was a 12.909 at 49.9mph! Benjamin had a nice reaction time of .039. Temp was 75F, 45%RH, we left at 3400 rpm. This was a picture perfect run, I'm not sure you can tune <.009> out of a 12.90 combo. Second run was at 11:15am, and we slowed a bit to 13.166 at 49.5mph, so we took off the 25#'s. First round at 1:02pm we dialed a 12.90 and it really picked up going a 12.64 at 51.2mph - not sure why, but it might like the heat as it was ~ 87F and ~50%RH. Also, the starting line was not nearly as tacky (that means less resistance, and actually will speed up the car). We lost the round, but it was a good day, it felt great to run a spot on 12.909. Looking forward to the next time out. I guess we'll put a fork in that old engine! |

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Atta boy, Benjamin! And to his crew chief!
Quick question: do you have a handheld weather station yet? NOAA shows that the High pressure front that had been hanging over your head slid further down right on top of you, going from 1016mb to 1024mb...doesn't sound like much change, but roughly 30.00 to 30.24, so definitely heavier air, and a pretty important variable. I always keep an eye on the surface analysis page on the NOAA-HPC site, especially if it's a multi-day event. |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
No handheld weather station - yet! Now that we can run in a tighter ET grouping it might be time for one - but I'm not yet sure how to adjust the car for the weather. It's quite the learning curve, but a lot of fun.
I downloaded a weahter app to my BB while at the track, and was going by that - but not enough data to make race car changes. I will check out your link for sure. This Jr Dragster racing is an awesome way to spend time with your kids and family. The soccer and baseball games are great, but this stuff is hands on, race talk, car talk, strategy talk, starting line & finish line.... when else do you have the opp to sit in the box trailer and hash out the dial in with your 8 year old? BTW, our rule from jump has been that its his car, his run, and his dial - the final decision is his. Its really a great time, if you were wondering if/how/when - just jump in! |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Keep the info coming Marlin! It's gotta be a blast!

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
School started today, soccer is almost back in full swing, so we will slow down the racing schedule a bit. We plan to hit the PA State Jr Championship race at Maple Grove on 9/12, this will be the first time Benjamin will only race against other 12.90 cars. This is key, since thus far he's been up against other kids who have been racing for up to 8 years already and are running 8.90 & 7.90's. The older kids are slamming the tree along with their dial-in's, and a big track like MGR has several really good racers. So, it will be nice to run against other cars that have just as much variability as ours.
We would like to race at South Mountain Dragstrip (just south of Carlisle, PA) in late Sept or early Oct since that is where I started racing with my uncle. Just a little 1/8 mile track, but its gotten totally refurbed - along with a name change. They also have a special Halloween Race at Englishtown on 10/31, we might hit that as our finale. Will take more pics next time, might have some from this past weekend as I saw the track photographer taking a few snaps, |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Well, after two rain dates the PA Jr. Dragster Championship finally happened this past weekend! We were all geared up for some TnT Friday night, only to pull into view of the track and find it a ghost town! Apparently, there's no TnT on Friday nights this time of year. Benjamin was truly upset since he had convinced Mom to let us camp out overnight in the pits, we had little air matresses, sleeping bags, a small grill, plenty of food, water, his BMX Trick Bike, just about everything. He was more excited about crashing in the pits for the night than he was about another TnT session.
So, my brain worked for a minute, and we checked out Maple Grove Park across the street! We got permission to camp out for the night in the actual campground, So, after getting a fire roaring, burgers going, and some R&R we were able to have a fun " guy's night " afterall. http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ipCamping2.jpg My 'little' buddy (who turns 9 on Saturday!) was burning everything! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ipCamping1.jpg Needless to say, we were first in line at MGR Saturday morning - even though about 10 motorhome rigs showed up overnight and camped out in the entrance lanes. It was nice to have the your choice of parking in the pits, and plenty of time to get through tech and prep for the first run. The first run was a 12.93 on the 12.90 limit - which is awesome, the r/t was a bit lazy at .281, but it had been awhile since our last race, so I cranked the launch idle up from 3,500 rpm to around 4,000. The next time shot was a 12.88 with a nicer r/t of .066. No changes necessary. But then, the track delays drug the day down, Between oil downs, and 2 long delays (1.5 hours each at least) for water coming up through the track in the shutdown area there was a lot of this: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...agingLanes.jpg My 'baby' Buddy Danny wore his favorite boots for the event, appropriate given the water situation! When we finally got the first elimination run in around 4pm, we ran a 12.93 on a 12.90 dial - but lost at the tree, Benjamin had another lazy light .236 to the competitor's .116 (also lazy), and worse yet the competitor ran a 13.033 on a 12.90! So, there was room to make it up - Benjamin said that he lifted a bit at the stripe, not sure why, but nothing like a first round loss help us down the learning curve a little more. All in all, it was a great day, the weather was perfect, the car ran the number 3x in a row (this is especially amazing for a 12.90 car!), and Benjamin came out grinning after each run. Anybody with an 8-16 year old who likes racing should give this a try! |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Looks like you guys are really gettin dialed in Keep at it, its paying off. Water bleeding through the track.........I thought they solved that with the re-pave. HUH?

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Apparently not, It wasn't really a hard rain 2 days before either, can't imagine how that issue would fly if the Pros were here!
Yea, the car has really come around, but it looks like other activities will crowd the schedule for the rest of the year: soccer, school, piano, school, etc.... |

Sad to say, but Benjamin had better get used to downtime in the lanes as he moves forward in his drag racing career...some days there's more action in the lanes [start/stop/start/stop] than on the track! Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Not much racing going on for us right now between school and soccer, so we did a little Jr Dragster crusading by taking Benjamin's Jr into school last Friday for his turn of show-n-tell! Benjamin has a super cool teacher who worked through the various permissions that were necessary.
It was good for Benjamin, as he's a bit on the shy side and any exercise in public speaking can be intimidating. The kids were very enthusiastic - especially when we strapped him in, started it up and did a few 30' blasts! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...llDistance.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ellcloseup.jpg |

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
We struggled a bit with the first 12.90 engine we bought, but got back on track with a stroke of luck when we discovered that a long forgotten 5HP Briggs engine stashed in the basement was a perfect fit. We now run right where we want, 12.90's to 13.10's depending on the weather.
So, we decided to tear down the first engine since its best run was in the high 15's, and no matter what we did it only ran slower - eventually running in the 19's & low 20's, (this is in the 1/8th!!) This is what we found, http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...gineinside.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ginesludge.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ngine1Cam1.jpg http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ngine1Cam2.jpg Lifters: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...e1Lifters1.jpg Bummer, looks like it held water for awhile and made the cam wear away. To make matters worse, the rod bolts rounded off when we tried to remove them. So, we took the bolt heads off with a Dremel tool. The rod looks pretty good, especially for not having a rod bearing - it rides directly on the crank. The crank is done though, the rod surface is quite pitted. We'll rebuild it over the winter so we have a backup engine! |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Marlin, may have been water, but, if you run alky, or even gas can do it, if enough gets in there, and left to sit. These motors will always have a certain amount of blowby, the really good ones making power are “loose”, which means more blowby, which contaminates the oil. At the track the ones that smoked a tad uauslly were the ones making power. On the go karts, we changed the oil between races. I would think you could get by with a day of drag racing without changing the oil but I would definitely change after each day of running.
Per oil, do not run any more then you have to, as the dipper going through the oil costs HP. You want just enough for the dipper “slinger” to pick it up. I carried 6 pre-measured small drink bottles with the right amount of oil in each for a quick change at the track. Some use the low friction oil additives, coconut oil is good as an additive, as heat will not hurt it. As you discovered, the Briggs does not use a bearing between the rod and crank, therefore clearance is very important. With rods being aluminum and cranks steel, the rods wear, actually get out of round, I found out the hard way (the rod breaks and goes through the block), the cranks get out of round as well. We would mike both during rebuilds, which we did quite often. Gaskets, rods, pistons, valves and valve springs, and rings are relative inexpensive, cranks and cams not so much. Also, I would say your crank bearing(s) a IC block has two, one on the side of the block and one on the side cover, are toast as well. There are several cam choices, coupled with the headers, moves the power band around. With the right tools, these motor can be rebuilt in a couple of hours. Really simple design. |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
M: too bad y'all didn't venture into Jr's a few years sooner, as the old man coulda hooked you up with all sorts of Briggs stuff...cam grinder, dyno, etc, I seem to remember dad & Mo just about begging folks to take the stuff when they got out...!

No runs for Danny this year (that I know of!) as he is only 3.5 years old, but loves the racing stuff, Amanda is almost 6 y/o, but has no desire to race - even though I promised her an all pink princess oriented race car.... no dice, Not surprising, she rarely drove her Barbie 2 person jeep as she much preferred her older brother to chauffer her around in it. We'll see, there is still hope......

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
We finally made it to the track this past Sunday!
Apparently, we need to blow off the cobwebs a bit, the car was running a little rough, wouldn't idle well. Car was a few tenths off from last year on the first run, yielding a 13.33 vs last year's final run of 13.1X's. The temp was cool, humidity was high. Next run was even slower with a 13.57 - Benjamin called for engine change! Dad said noway, Benjamin dials his own car with only minimal input from me. So, he dialed a 13.60, and then drew a 7.90 car in the first round. This is not surprising since of the 30-35 Jr's only 3-4 of them are running 12.90. Maple Grove does not classes within Jr's, so its a tough place to start out. I tried to explain to Benjamin that racing at the Grove is similar to playing up 3-4 years in soccer - its tough at first, but he'll become a better racer in less time. We will run at a few other tracks this year where they do run the 8-9 year olds together so he can experience running against other 12.90 cars. Crazy car picks it back up, and runs a 13.29! We went out first round - I wish it was because we ran under, which we obviously were on track to do, but Benjamin was a little lazy on the tree that day and the 7.90 kid caught him at the stripe. Apparently, I need to adjust the rollout in the practice tree. These 12.90 cars react pretty slow since they don't have a lot of power. We plan to hit the TnT tomorrow night, then another run at it on Sarurday. We will write DEEP on the car going forward. What a blast, there is no better way to spend a day with your kid. Now, what did I do with that Yenko Deuce I used to take out once in a while? PS: I think a Kestrel 4250 is in the near future, http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...wintrophy1.jpg |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Sounds like you guys are getting dialed in in this hot, humid weather. never easy but when the kid has interest and spirit, it makes it much easier. About that Gobi Beige car...........bring it down. I have a few real nice vintage parts that would look good on that car. Will look the part of a Yenko when I am done with it! Can I have it for the summer?
|
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Marlin...glad to see Ben-Jammin...and having fun too
Doing stuff with your kids while they are still kids is priceless. I wouldn't trade the memories that I made with Holly when she was small for any amount of money! |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Agreed!!
A rescheduled playoff baseball game spoiled Friday night for us, but the team won 8-2! A rainout today keeps us home - bummer, since we are pumped to see the car run with the new front wheels we just installed. Oh well, more rain is in store for tomorrow - we were planning to run at E-Town. We'll be checking the websites very early tomorrow..... |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
We couldn't sit home another day. The Grove had a special event, E-Town was still under a weather watch so we went West! If anyone recalls the old South Mountain Dragway (now back to the original name of Quarter Aces), it looked like a good place to go. I've not been there since I was a teen, but I remembered that I really liked it.
So, with the wipers on this morning we headed West. No rain when we got here! I know the new owners put a lot of $ into this track, but I must say that it still looks like a time capsule - Benjamin is loving it! What a great place, back to the days of dirt / grass pits, no scoreboards, lots of friendly folks and a very relaxed schedule. Oh, and they tech you at your pit!! We knew the car would run slower today with the 80+ temps and high 70's humidity. Benjamin clicked off a 13.40 on the first run - pretty consistent with last weekend. He's been working the practice tree, and we staged DEEP and got a .176 RT. Not bad. Second run with similar air yielded a 13.60 with a .068 light. Ben dialed a 13.55, and ran a 13.59 - but redlit the great run away! Oh well, it was another great day of racing, a win light would have been nice, but I can't get the grin off his face now - imagine when he wins his first one, can't wait. More next weekend - hopefully. |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Awesome Marlin...We are along for the ride with you!!!
|
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Stanley is the new owner and he had alot of flood damage to deal with this spring, I am 20 min from Mt. Holly. I think Stanley is realizing it is costing him more money to run the track than what he is bringing in. I remember back in the late 60's when I was a regular, there was a guy in I believe a 63 or 64 Chev did not make the turn at the end of the track and went straight into the trees, needless to say he is not around today to tell the story.
|
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Yea, I can see where Stanley could easily get upside down in this venture. The flood damage was a real shame. On the positive, the $'s invested in the infrastructure are wonderful - that new starting line is awesome, as is the cleared out return road. Ben absolutely loved the high banked shutdown area, he can't wait to go back!

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
We hit the MGR TnT Friday night, got 6 runs in!
First run off the trailer was a 13.55 with an .079 light, we decided to take the weight off - after which Ben relates that his foot slipped off the gas pedal on that run. Either way, removing the 25 #'s is a quick way to pick up 2.5 tenths (in theory). Second run he cuts an .063 light and runs a 12.93 Awesome! We get right back in line for run #3, he cuts an .050 light and runs a 12.95. We take a break to go get our ETI squared away, and come back an hour or so later. The humidity was climbing quickly, so run #4 was a redlight and a 13.10, #5 was an .019 light with a 13.15 - another long wait for oil downs.... We got run #6 in around 9:45pm with 77% humidity turning on the red bulb and slowing down to a 13.40. Overall, it was a good TnT session on a weekend where we couldn't get to a race. Ben was happy to be running 'fast' again, Dad was happy to know that this little 5HP Briggs still has 12.9x's in it. What a fun night! |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Car was acting up a bit last Sunday afternoon when we were practicing launches in a parking lot. Got to the track tonight only to find it was acting up again - it would run fine, then slown down and eventually stall. Some vapor/smoke came out of the vent tubes, so we dug into it.
Found that the oil dipper broke off the rod bolts, Pretty mangled up. Without this 'slinger' there is no oil going to the bore nor the rod to crank surfaces. http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h68/aacorp/Dipper.jpg I pulled this rod cap with integrated oil dipper from another engine we have, hopefully it will work better: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...withDipper.jpg Aligning the cam/crank, tomorrow is another day - hopefully we'll make it down the track! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h68/aacorp/camdot.jpg |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Good luck M!

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Well, we thrashed on it Saturday morning - stealing the entire rod that mates to the rod cap/dipper in the pic above from another engine. We put that rod in, buttoned it back up, and fired it up. Did some test runs in a parking lot and loaded up Saturday afternoon.
We decided to go to Numidia Dragway in Numidia, PA - up around Bloomsburg, as we've never been to that track before. The Dimino family is known for running a great track, having great programs and especially for being Jr Dragster friendly - as all 4 Dimino sons have come through the Jr program. We were not dissappointed, the track is in a beautiful setting and Benjamin loved this return road as well - he had to come through the wall, down a short stretch and up a hill to the Jr shutdown area. Long story short, we likely hurt that engine a little since it slowed down on us more than it should have given the high humidity yesterday morning. First run off the trailer was a 13.97 with an .051 light, bummer. The run 'round robin', so tossed in a dash of fuel and went right back. Second run was a 14.04 with an .021 light, not looking good for speed/ET but that's pretty consistent for a 12.90 car. They run elims right away, so we went right back for round 1. We were the only 12.90 car in a 19 car field - so Ben was matched up to an 8.90 car. All of these runs are paying off, because Benjamin did everything right on this run: he dialed his own car (he didn't even tell me what he dialed), he left first of course and cut an .028 light - treeing the 8.90 car who had a .110 light. Then, he drove the stripe - knowing that the 8.90+ cars usually roar by at the line, but he looked around real quick at the big end and didn't see him coming so he got out of it! He pulled a 14.06 on a 14.03 dial! That's driving - and he's only 9, and only doing this part time for less than a year! We went out second round with a red bulb, but it was a good run for that since his foot slipped off the gas half way down the run - car was on it's mark though. How proud! Now if the crew chief can only get the engine program together - looks like we are moving to Plan C this week, A few pics. Not much time to chill out in the pits as the second round of elims was done by 11:30AM! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...atNumidia1.jpg Many tracks that don't run Jr's by Class will give a trophy to the 8-9 year olds who win a round.
