Rusty, what's right for the original 14x7 wheels on my 70 Chevelle, and how much would it cost to ship five of them to Calgary, Alberta?

Sure, PM sent. How about Wide Ovals?

Re: Polyglas, Wide Treads, and more

Both were possible,Goodyear polys or Firestone Wide Oval, and were the most popular.
Uniroyal Tiger Paw & General 700 Bia Belts were too,but those aren't reproduced today.
A few have claimed to have gotten their '70 Chevelle w/B.F.Goodrich Silvertowns too.
The buildsheet & window sticker didn't specify brand.
All are F70X14 size.

How much of his is true for 69?

Re: Polyglas, Wide Treads, and more

I know Firestones and Goodyears were available in 69.

In '69, the Goodyears for Chevelle and Camaro were Speedway Wide Treads, with Polyglas in very late availability. The date has been a controversy, but I know that Camaro Pace cars wore Firestones of GY Polyglas. The track car was wearing 15" 'Vette rims with Speedway's.

Let me know what you are looking for and the build date and we can add some clarity to the picture!

Re: Polyglas, Wide Treads, and more

The Chevele's build date was September 1969

SmallHurst 04-06-2013 01:01 PM

Re: Polyglas, Wide Treads, and more

The reason I ask about the build date of the car is that Goodyear had a rolling change out on the sidewall design. The rollout changes occurred during the October to December 1969 time frame.

Firestone Wide Ovals smell the best at PSMCDR, the burnout guy probably will concur.

Why is that? Goodyear and Firestone were both available at that time.

As for smell, I have always prefered the blend of race gas and vaporized rubber.

The Goodyears are all made in the USA.

Are you talking about the actual Pace Cars or the Replicas ? I have never seen a replica with a orig. Polyglas tire on it from the factory. I have a orig. Wide Tread out of a replica.

SmallHurst 04-08-2013 03:02 PM

Re: Polyglas, Wide Treads, and more

Yes, the pace car replicas were done with both Polyglas and Wide Ovals. Most years the tires were exclusive, but not in 1969.

The actual pace cars (2) were out fitted with Firestones on one and Goodyear Power Cushions on the other ( the Corvette tires). It was a big PR deal that year.

Can you show me a documented Pace Car replica with a Polyglas tire ?

Correction on the actual pace cars. The Goodyear car wore F70-15 Speedway Wide Treads. The Firestone and Goodyear cars actually alternated going out on the track.
Mr. Kelsey is going to see if he can pull up a picture of the Mexico Govt. representative riding in one of the Goodyear parade cars.

My 69 Z11 (Maryland Zone display car) had Speedway Widetreads on it when delivered. The original owner took it on his honeymoon in the Summer of 69 and the car wound up in a lot of the honeymoon photos.

Here's a shot from December of 1970 with the original Widetreads still on the car.

Re: Polyglas, Wide Treads, and more

It's my understanding that the pace cars did not start until about March of '69. This would have been the timeframe for the start of Polyglas usage.

'69 Trans Ams came off the line with F70-14 Polyglas.

njsteve 04-10-2013 01:36 AM

Re: Polyglas, Wide Treads, and more

The festival and press cars started a bit earlier than that actually. Mine was an 02D car built right in the VIN sequence of the COPOs. 610486, if I recall corectly. That must have been a helluva sight, seeing all those cars running down the line at Norwood.

Canuck 04-10-2013 01:57 AM

Re: Polyglas, Wide Treads, and more

My understanding was pace cars were fitted with both Firestone and Goodyear for all pre race activities. Whichever tire was on the car that won the pole position, then the lead pace car would be shod in that tire company's tire. The exception occurred in 1972 when Goodyear has an exclusive with Indy to showcase is new Polysteel tire and as such all pace cars came equipped with G60-14 Polysteel Tires.

SmallHurst 04-10-2013 06:35 PM

Re: Polyglas, Wide Treads, and more

That may have happened some years, but most of the time, a specific tire was tied to the pace car. Like you mentioned, 72 H/O. 78 Vette was specific and in 71 Mopar was always Goodyear.

Canuck 04-10-2013 09:16 PM

Re: Polyglas, Wide Treads, and more

Here are two photos from 1971, the actual Pace car that crashed,, you can see Goodyear and the other pace car has Firestone.

Hello again!

I am getting geared up for my run to Stanton, MI for the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Races, September 13 and 14th. Again, I am taking preorders for tires to be delivered to the track for $10/ tire. My suggestion is to contact me sooner rather than later so that we can make sure that the tires will be available for me to pickup rather than be on backorder. Please contact me via PM or by phone-- 816-654-3400.

Thanks,

Rusty
