Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!

When Gordy raced the car in '62 the tracks required him to send his exhaust to the perimeter of the car with a set up like below. I recreated it with his inputs. It reminds me of a jet aircraft for some reason https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif . It changes the pitch of the Max Wedge to a more throaty, satisfying sound https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif !

Re: Sam Griffith's Super Savoy!

I remember a guy in the Neighborhood that had a 62 or 63 Dodge Max Wedge Torqflite car....He drove it daily and it timed out that as I was walking to School in the morning he would be going to work.....Loved to hear the "Muscle" Sound......as I remember they were manual Choke cars and when the Weather got Cold.....That Car wasn't going anywhere until it got warm enough to keep running when the "D" button was pushed......I think the car lasted one or two winters and he got Married and the Dodge was replaced with a Slant Six Dart
Have a lot of Memories of that car with the "Rumpity" Idle and the Shoe Polish Numbers on the Window from the Drag Strip..Very Impressionable on a Young "Whizz"

Max Wedge motors did not like the cold wx https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif . There was no heat cross-over on the intake manifold and Chrysler warned of carburetor icing. A service bulletin recommended covering the radiator and using a gasoline with anti-icing additives. "In winter weather, a rich surging condition, misfiring, and unstable engine operation may be encountered which may be severe and make ordinary street driving extremely difficult and undesirable" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif

You are right. They did have a manual choke. One pull knob connected to two cables/choke levers (3rd knob from the left).

Bob - I was wondering if any of the locals would know Beil's. Gordy owns it and operates it and his son and several other workers are on the payroll. I got the grand tour which was a lot of fun. The attic is like a maze and holds an impressive stock of vintage cloth/vinyl/leather. He has some very rare upholstery, vinyl roof, and convertible top material in his storage facility. Some of it dates back to the 20's and 30's. Plenty of sixties/seventies stuff too https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif . He is very proud of his business and is in the process of turning it over to his son.
