[ QUOTE ]
I picked up a Gledhill Chevrolet license frame at Carlisle this week. Pretty cool find at a PA swap meet IMO. Supposedly the James Garner A.I.R. L88 Vettes were to be shipped there. Whether they actually ever made it to the dealership or not is hard to say... [/ QUOTE ] I believe the James Garners Vettes were from Clippenger Chevrolet in West Covina CA . Bob Wingate was a salesman at Clippinger and known for having factory pull and selling a lot of HiPo cars (sold my 69Z to the original owner) and put the AIR/Guldstrand/Garner deal together http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ershowroom.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...arner_07_z.jpg Ahh I read that article and see the conection.. Wingate was known for getting the job done one way or another Also.. I found some Clippinger frames on So Cal Craigslist so anyoenneeding frames that is a possibility |
Re: Fred Gledhill Chevrolet
Wingate worked at Clippinger and was the #1 corvette salesman in the nation at the time. He put in a COPO order for the three L88's for Garner's yet to be announced A.I.R.team through Gledhill and they were indeed delivered there. The photos of the cars at the West Covina dealer were from a PR event based on a racing parts deal if I remember correctly.

Re: Fred Gledhill Chevrolet
I still have an article on Bob Wingate that appeared in an April/'81 magazine called Car Exchange. After 17 years with the Chevrolet dealership he formed his own company, Bob Wingate's Classics, Inc. He had discovered at this point in his life that people like me and others east of the Missouri River cherished the condition of most California born and raised classic cars. I bought a nice one owner '57 Chevy Belair from him many years ago that we later restored to trailered status.

Re: Fred Gledhill Chevrolet
That's cool. Looks like Mr. Wingate found his passion early in life with Chevrolet.
I gotta move to CA someday. You guys are in car paradise (and the wine and weather are pretty good as well). Take care, Mark. |

</div></div> The L-88 was a regular production option. Every high performance Chevy wasn't a COPO. |
