Re: Nickey Z28s
Frank, I had most of those 67 Z photos on display at SCR last year... you had your nose buried so far in my other displays you didn't have time to look at my "good" memorabilia. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Stefano,
I have been meaning to ask you about the Nickey '67 Z-28s. I own the Johnny Moore car which you have on your list. I have gathered a bunch of information on many of the first 25 Z-28s that Chevrolet built but have never heard much at all about the Nickey cars. I don't even know what color they were, let alone if they were ever raced. Was Don Swiatek able to provide further details about the cars and what may have happened to them? I definitely would love to hear more about them if you can share any details. Joe, those are some great pictures of those very early Yenko Z-28s. Thanks for sharing. That one on the track in March is definitely early but my car had already run in the Daytona Trans-Am on February 3rd along with the Mark Donohue (#12), Craig Fisher (#14) and Joie Chitwood (#21) Z-28s. I think they were probably getting that Yenko car ready for the Sebring Trans-Am which was run at the end of March. -Jon ________________________________ Johnny Moore Aero Chevrolet Z-28 |

At speed...full race 67 Z/28, March 1967...I think it's safe to say that Yenko was the one to beat in 67... keep in mind they also converted 50+ SS cars to 427s this same year too....in addition to continuing with the Corvair Stinger program, Sunray D-X L88 corvettes, etc. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif https://www.yenko.net/attachments/209899-ebay068.jpg [/ QUOTE ] My attachment shows a Yenko Stormer (302 Z-28) which was driven by Bud Gates at the Sebring Trans-Am on 3-31-67. It was a red Z-28 ordered through Span and was part of a two-car Yenko team at Sebring. I'm pretty confident it is the same car as posted by camarojoe above. -Jon |

Here's a shot of the same Z's interior as it was being taken apart for race prep. You can see the Fisher Body sill plates up on the dash, the same as in camarojoe's picture a couple of posts above this one. I guess part of the same photo shoot.

I know that both Don Swiatek and Ronnie Kaplan said that they would like to try and make the Fall Vette Fest, especially since it is so close to home for them. That would be an ideal time to have them field some questions about those Z28s, as well as other Nickey Cars, ect. ________________________________ |

I have interviewed several of the guys who were drivers or owners on the list of the first 25 Z-28s built. I'd love to be able to add as much as possible on the high-profile dealers like Nickey and Yenko and hopefully this will all make it into a book for all to enjoy. Attached is an ad from Nickey circa July '67 advertising racing engines for sale. I know that Ken Deckman bought a Marina Blue Z-28 through Alan Green Chevrolet in Seattle in March '67 and he had Nickey do his 302 engine for him as he was going to Trans-Am race the car. -Jon |
Re: Nickey Z28s
FWIW, the restoration of the Ken Deckman car was covered in seven articles in Super Chevy from January 1994 to February 1995. Here is a link to the series of articles entitled "Revival of the Fittest" covering the car's restoration to race trim:
