Re: V-8 Corvair
it was made from the tempest 2 speed powerglide, they added a 2 speed planatary to the back side of the diff to make it a 4 speed auto. They tried it with a fluid coupling and did not work well so they adaped a clutch behind the planatary. It used a hyd acutator to operate the clutch. You used the clutch to launch then a man. auto from there. The trans has to be shifted in every gear.Put it in 3rd and you will start in 3rd.The weak link was the small R&P gear and they had to be changed every 10-12 runs. All the cars except one were changed to front trans.Jay adapted a converter to his and it works great.Mine will SOMEDAY go in my 63 tempest wagon with my all alu 389 engine.Tom

Re: V-8 Corvair
he worked for GM and got the names of the SD racers and bought them as they were pulled out.I think 2 came from M/T and one from fla.He iss in his late 70s and figured he no longer need spares. He sold a broken one with a fluid coupling to a guy I know and I bought the complete spare that is supposed to be ready to go.Will dig out the manual and explain how the system works.I know the pinion gear is hollow and the main shaft goes from the tq tube and through the front trans, then diff, then the rear planatry and out the flywheel and hyd cluth mech.Tom
