-------Use of a dark primer with dark colors and a light primer with light colors promoted less use of the final color because coverage was easier. Hence, lower final cost. Bean-counters at thier best............Bill S

olredalert;

I see your point. It is confusing since I have seen a Ruddy Red Primer used on light cars and a dark cars.

Greg,

-------There were probably times when necessity dictated that the first choice wasnt used. The plant stopped for nothing short of cataclismic disaster..........Bill S

They used a dab of that dark ruddy primer to stick the back of my buildsheet to the top of my gas tank---

Re: Ruddy Red Primer

Bill,
I am by no means versed in how those choices were made in the later '60s, but from what I've researched through the early sixties, there was no distinction what-so-ever between primer choice and final top coat color. The plants simply had one batch they used for everything until a new batch came in and they switched. To keep light with light and dark with dark, they'd have to have two primer lines, then separate the cars to each line. I'd think that would be too much work.
IF there's one guy I know who could answer this most accurately, it would John Hinckley over on CRG. He was there.

PS: Or you might even try asking MoParts Dad, who has addressed many of those details from my queries on my '63 Impala anniversary gold thread. Not surehe worked in the Camaro or Nova plants though....................Mo?

Re: Ruddy Red Primer

---------Yes, Verne.......I should have had a question mark in my original post as my remark was only a guess. To me it sounded plausible, especially after so many guys here piped up that thier dark colored cars had dark primer and vis-a-versa!
-------You are right about John H as well. I live quite near him and we have similar Corvette history. He is one of the good guys!.............Bill S
