In my travels I have found drag racers don't much care what their car was originally. A few years ago a bud was contacted to examine a race car, owner had it almost 20 years. How he could have not known it was a ZL1 is hard to imagine, as the VIN tag was untouched. Race car since new, probably never registered. Many don't have any tags.
I believe there is a '69 Yenko Camaro drag car, still being raced out of the Chicago area. They know and don't care. |
I found a COPO out here a couple years ago. The owner keeps hinting to me at selling but hasn't pulled the trigger yet. It's an X44 that is dollied up like a Z. He drives it around on a regular basis and we talk occasionally. Found the car in a backyard in Phoenix with no engine/trans. Has a BE rear dated to the car, factory muncie hole and ZL2 hole in the firewall.
He installed a small block and muncie 4 speed, painted the car up to look like a Z and has fun with it. |

Mine just had the Z-stripes, still retained the bowtie badging. Was being used as a street machine from 1978 until I bought it in 2018. I wasn't even sure I bought a COPO until I consulted folks on this site with my suspicions.

Thanks Jeremy, I always wondered if there was any rare cars in that area (Rocky Ford). |

I saw a post on a drag racing forum where a guy said he knew the owner of ZL1 #22. It was bought from Mac's with a 375 hp 396. The guy raced it with the L78. He said the engine was put in a Corvette race car and was blown up, then the engine was sitting in the showroom of Mac's Chevy on display. I don't know it the story is true but he posted these pics.
I checked the CRG ZL1 list on #22 and it shows a silver car from Mac's |
