Very much the truth. The AIM manual even shows the engine for the car but was canceled before production.

Incidentally, on the blue SS427 promotional photo above, this was a pre release photo and the hood nose emblem was not placed on production cars.

The truth was that the L68 was going to be available, or the hood was a homage to that engine that ended up not being installed?
