What do you think the purpose of the inserts for shipping would've been, that they would've been removed during dealer prep?

IMO, they were not removed during dealer prep but were put there to keep things from rolling down into the abyss. Some Mopars did this, even my stripped down, cheapo, '62 Plymouth has them.

just a thought but do u think it mattered what wheels u had??this car had rally wheels orig and the trim was shipped in the trunk...do u think they were there so nothing fell into that area and got lost?

These were Production albeit very limited use. There is even a TSB on them. Probably designed to cover the gap left by the 1970 sheet metal change of that part of the trunk.
