April 14, 1981 – Completing its first official mission in Earth orbit, the Space Shuttle Columbia comes home to Edwards Air Force Base in California.

A 16 inch/50 caliber Mark 2 gun loaded on a truck being transported to Fort Funston, California on April 14, 1937.

This gun had been manufactured for USS Saratoga (CC-3), when she was planned to be a 35,000 ton battlecruiser. While under construction, she was converted into an aircraft carrier in accordance with the Washington Naval Treaty.

----I'm being a name dropper, but bare with me here. I had dinner at the host hotel in Bakersfield at the Hot Rod Reunion in 1993 (maybe 1994) with Fast Eddie, Doug (of Doug's Headers), and Bob Riggle. Just luck on my part as Bob invited me, but what a fun evening. People kept coming to the booth and saying hi to those three and looking at me like I was from Mars. Didn't care as I was with three such famous, at the same time very humble people.....Bill S
