https://www.yenko.net/photos/data/500/Hipo_Used_cars.JPG [/ QUOTE ] South Brand would be in Glendale, CA and this dealership is probably next-door to Alan Gwynn Chevrolet, where my '67 RS/SS 396 was sold new. AND, there's a bumperless '55 parked at far right! I have a bumperless '55 so this is a double-cool picture! |
Re: Old Street Scenes
I'm pretty sure that is "Stick City" in LA. They were a really famous Hi-Performance used car dealer a long time ago. I have a radio commercial from them saved on my computer that'll I'll try to post here shortly. Don't forget to look close at that front row......yep, that's even a flip-top Funny Car! Now that's a used car lot!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN7Xs...mp;feature=fvw Here it is.....a small snippet of a Stick City radio commercial and a picture of their sign. It's at the very end of this this Beach Boys' "I Get Around" video. You can fast forward thru the song and get to it or just listen to the whole thing....it's always been a great song anyway!

Re: Old Street Scenes
The "Stick City" that I knew of was on Whittier Blvd...which was in Whittier. We used to cruise up Beach Blvd (Hwy 39)from Anaheim to go and check out what they had.
I don't know if they had a location in Glendale at some point? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif Found on the HAMB... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/a.../t-101275.html |
Re: Old Street Scenes
Also...Don Steves Chevrolet was real close to Stick City...if you went up Hwy 39 (Beach Blvd) and made a right onto Whittier Blvd...Don Steves was on the left.
If you made a left onto Whittier Blvd for Beach Blvd...Stick City was on the left. I believe that a "Select Vans" was also nearby? BTW, Don Steves is still in business...and one of the members here had a car from there? http://www.donsteveschev.com/ https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif Here are a few pics...taken from the HAMB site! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif Corvair sponsored by them.. http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/n...rIrwindale.jpg Scans of an article http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...n_lastscan.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...y/tn_scan2.jpg |

Re: Old Street Scenes
I remember cruising down to Stick City and on the way home we'd stop by "Sticks Unlimited" on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. Anyone recall that one? There was a convertible Corvette funny cay body on the roof of the office and it said Gene Conway's Sticks unlimited! cool. Here's a link to Funny Cars from the past with the Sticks Unlimited Corvette among many famous race cars...

Don Steves name was on a few race cars in the old days if I remember correctly. Another HIPO dealer that doesn't get much recognition! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: Old Street Scenes
Don Steves Chevrolet sold TWO of the aluminum-front end '62 Impalas and at least one 1963 Z-11 Impala, which I believe was the Tom Sturm-driven car.

Addison, Illinois isn't too far from me. I remember some of these stores when I was a kid. Very sad to see them all gone. Reminds me of a time when America was a great country.

Re: Old Street Scenes
WoW..I grew up in Villa Park,Il. just one town south of Addison, and still live a few miles away from there today.
That whole store link speaks to me. My sister worked at Arthur Treachers during 1975 on St. Charles Rd. in Villa Park. She had to wear those dumb paper hats & uniforms, like in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High.I think it's Mickeys today. We used to frequent the Robert Hall Village store on the N.East corner of North Ave. & Addison Rd. for years.I used to buy model car kits there. My uncle bought his first polyester suit there..LOL.It's a HOBO home store today. My Mom worked at the ZAYRE on the corner of Lake St. & Addison Rd..She worked many a double shift there.I vividly remember how that place looked at night during the 60's-70's with those outside letters glowing.Ben Franklin 5&10 was on the way there too. My other sister worked at FAYVA shoes next to Woolco in Villa Park near Victoria Station & Poppin Fresh Pies...I remember their radio commercials..."Do yourself a Fayva.Shop here!"..LOL. Tom McCann shoes was also on St.Charles Rd. in VP,next to McDonalds, before it went tits up. JC Pennys outlet was on North Ave, too, where Supreme Lobster is today.Across the street from Strats Drive in. JEWEL Foods stores have always been a major staple around here, but when Burney Bros. bakery left them,we kinda did too. Topps is still SYMMS today today, near the corner of North Ave. & Westmore Ave.I bought my first Johnny Lightning cars there, back in 69.Across the street from SYMMS is where BIG R used to be.It's Jungle World today, but I spent most of my childhhod life in BIG R.I bought model kits & Matchbox/HotWheel cars for years there, and can still see the layout of the store in my head. For 10 years, every time we went to BIG R,our parents placed us 3 kids in the Photo booth near the front door that took a strip of pics for 50 cents,to document how we'd grown.I just recently got those 10 picture strips from my Mom,who found them in a shoebox. All in B&W. Dick Portillo started his very first Hotdog stand in BIG R's parking lot on North Ave. & Westmore, back in 1963.I remember it looking like a Photomat store. All those and E.J. Korvettes are so dear to my heart for so many reasons back then.. |
