One of the most iconic American car logos, the Corvette emblem has evolved significantly over its 66 years. The first logo put two words and two flags on a white background. The words, of course, were “Chevrolet” and “Corvette.” A black and white checkered flag signified racing victory and a red flag displayed a Chevrolet Bow Tie and a fleur-di-lis. This second flag was a shift from the American flag the Corvette prototype wore, simply because the American flag cannot be used on a commercial product. The fleur-de-lis is a nod to Louis Chevrolet’s French roots and denotes peace and purity. |

Police blew up an innocent man’s house in search of an armed shoplifter. Too bad, court rules. When they were finished, it looked as though the Greenwood Village, Colo., police had blasted rockets through the house. But now it was just a neighborhood crime scene, the suburban home where an armed Walmart shoplifting suspect randomly barricaded himself after fleeing the store on a June afternoon in 2015. For 19 hours, the suspect holed up in a bathroom as a SWAT team fired gas munition and 40-millimeter rounds through the windows, drove an armored vehicle through the doors, tossed flash-bang grenades inside and used explosives to blow out the walls. The suspect was captured alive, but the home was utterly destroyed, eventually condemned to be demolished by the City of Greenwood Village. That left Leo Lech’s son, John Lech — who lived there with his girlfriend and her 9-year-old son — without a home. The city refused to compensate the Lech family for their losses but offered $5,000 in temporary rental assistance and for the insurance deductible. Now, after the Leches sued, a federal appeals court has decided what else the city owes the Lech family for destroying their house more than four years ago: nothing. Around 13,000 years ago, giant animals such as mastodons, mammoths, saber-toothed cats and ground sloths disappeared from the Earth. Scientists have found evidence in sediment cores to support a controversial theory that an asteroid or a comet slammed into Earth and helped lead to this extinction of ice age animals and cooling of the globe. It's called the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis and was first suggested in 2007. The hypothesis included the idea that an extraterrestrial body impacted Earth 12,800 years ago. This led to an extreme cooling of the environment, which in turn helped cause more than 35 species of large animals to go extinct. At the same time, human populations declined. The impact also has been suggested as the cause of large, raging wildfires that created enough smoke to block the sun and created an "impact winter," in which cold weather lasts longer than expected after Earth is impacted. |

The 11-bedroom house was packed with over-the-top features, including $3 million (£2.3m) worth of 22-carat gold leafing. The polished mahogany cabinets have a curved front and gold beveled frames, which matches the gilded cornice on the ceiling and the trio of crystal chandeliers. |
