When built, they were one of the fastest operational aircrafts in the world.  
The main frames also wings were constructed mostly of wood!

 Pete.. I thought they were ALL wood, marine plywood, I think. They were built in Toronto, most of them, if my memory is correct. 
I worked next door on the same street as DeHavilland, the original building was almost lost in the Sunrise propane explosion, luckily the it only blew out the windows.
