The 1966 GT40 MK II 427 engines used aluminum heads to cut down the weight. As this car was built specifically for top end tire testing, that could be one of the 427 Cobra LeMans engines. It was Shelby who originally wanted the lighter weight heads for his assault on LeMans. It also looks like the engine has an aluminum water pump - also used on the MK II engines.
The aluminum heads were never made available to the general public as O-T-C performance items. Strictly used for racing. |
