Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
A little back and forth between Nick and I:-)
Me: Did "we" get the Italian gears? If so, how much? Nick: "I actually did. I found a new set of Italian made gears for $XXX including shipping. It was a close out New Year’s special, last set he had. I also scored the tail housing and a pair of Torque lock sliders. I emailed a shop in Wisconsin who may have the bolt on type shifter shafts. I am still looking for the bolt type reverse shaft. I took all of the drive gears off the main shaft today. There are supposed to be 4 “tension” springs on the 2 slider hubs that keep the 3 “keys” in place and push the synchros forward on each shift. As you know the synchros “speed” up the next gear to be shifted which makes it smooth and reduces the possibility of grinding the gears. Well, your trans had no tension springs at all. I was going to replace them with the heavy duty type anyway but this is very odd. No worries, all will be taken care of as I have several sets of those springs. Pictures will be coming tomorrow. Had to go to the dentist this afternoon. Nick " Me: Wow, you are on fire!! I took the springs before sending it to you as a test:-) (kidding) An inexperienced guy could "rebuild" that POS Trans putting every single part back as it came apart and waste all the time and money just like that, missing parts, welded chunks, Frankenstein would be proud:-) Dentist give you a good drilling and filling? Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I visited Sam after work, what fun!!
We checked out a few W-Machines, especially his 69 W-30 it has boxed lowers sway bar and trailing arms:-) I picked up a set of 14 X 6 steel wheels and three dinged up 67-69 dog dish caps:-) We looked especially at fuel pumps and alternators, he has all the part numbers memorized:-) Thanks Sam!! |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
More transmission info:-)
"LOL, the dentist did a good painless cleaning. I agree with you regarding putting something back together as it came apart with pieces missing. The most common deletion is a cluster shim. I have found them many times stuck to the bottom magnet. They are tricky to get in place and a real pain if you use too much grease on the cluster bearings. The transmissions where I found the shims on the case bottom require a main case change as the cluster, without a .146 shim on one end, walks and grinds away the case. Not pretty. Nick" |

Hopefully no more issues! (Better now than later of course) Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6821-image.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...6822-image.jpg |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Spent a little time in the garage last night, heater works:-) bins are preped for small parts:-) but....
I am already hurting for space and the single bare bulb is wholly inadequate:-( Step by step:-) I have to make shelves high on one side of the garage for totes and parts like driveshaft for example otherwise I am not going to accomplish anything:-( Time to do a few chores around the house, then take off my apron and measure up for shelves to see what lumber is needed:-) I also hope to take the exhaust to the igloo (again to make room to move.) Ryan The one thing I did get done was mop up the oil that spilled out of the M22, (rookie here stored it for a few days with the tail down) the oil pooled around all kinds of wheeled carts, etc, took an hour to soak it up:-( Learning every single day:-) |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ryan, when we moved into out current house 13 years ago, I knew the garage was going to go for a new version sooner rather than later and I had a similar lighting issue. I ended up getting hold of some 4' double fluro lights and put plugs on the end so I could run a lead to it. I hung them in position so I could work on my race car. Worked great as a temporary measure and was relatively inexpensive. Whatever you decide I'm sure you'll get past it. Keep the hammer down, your going great!

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Thanks Damien!!
Funny, I bought 4 double 4 foot T8 fixtures and a box of day light bulbs, and BX, connectors, anti shorts, etc.......this way I can save the flashlight for special occasions:-) I also measured everything and made a layout for the garage and sketched up some desperately needed shelves!!! (Including the extra engine, trans, compressor, Jack, garbage can, etc..... All the stuff I am tripping over at every turn. Ryan |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
A big thank you to Dave (northernforce')
He spent New Year's Eve searching for a set of trailing arms to donate to my resto project!!! How nice is that? Many thanks Dave!!! Ryan PS: he sent me a link to a friends website especially for the control arm information. I checked the uppers last night at midnight as I couldn't wait till the morning to find out if mine are the "12 bolt style" (corner cut and extra plate welded in place) or "10 bolt style" mine are "10 bolt style" as the Olds 12 bolt is actually a 10 bolt rear with 12 bolts holding the cover in place. http://www.lever-family-racing.com/ |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Nick is like a dog on a bone!!!
My transmission will be the first part of the car to be ready for use:-) "Ryan, I started to look through the new parts already delivered. I am still waiting for the gear set which is sitting at my local FedEx office. They should be here tomorrow. I also looked closer at the parts I intend to reuse and found that this trans had 1 “wide” hub and 1 “narrow” hub. See the attached picture. Either one will work but they should match the brass. This trans had the brass for the wide hubs. I should have a wide hub which is what the trans came with originally. Narrow hubs started in 1969. Hello Terry. Welcome to the site, there is little to no drama here and so many great car guys!!! I have a prediction you own a Post Sedan Rambler Drag car...........I have seen it at the show on Main Street but couldn't find the owner anywhere......... Your offer to help out with your tilt load truck is very generous, very Canadian of you!!! Ryan PostSedan (Dan) is my good friend, he always has my back!!! He is a giant so I like having him on my side:-) |
Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Ryan, the '64 Rambler drag car is mine, but I just bought a new to me barn find. The week before Christmas
I bought a '71 Hornet SC/360 out of a barn in Wisconsin. It's rough and incomplete but the real deal. The car is now in a friend's shop in Detroit while I wait for the title. |

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
More transmission transmissions:-)
"Ryan, I finished cleaning everything, measured all components that will be reused and laid out everything for assembly. I am just waiting for a couple of items that, as luck would have it, goes on the main-shaft first. That would be the replacement “wide” hub that I found and ordered on e-bay. Attached is a picture of the components that I have ready to go. The second picture is what I was telling you about the clutch disc and the “depth” of the flywheel mating surface. I found the disc I mentioned to you that came in contact with the flywheel bolts. You can see the flat spot on the spring where it made contact with the flywheel bolts. The clutch never fully disengaged and took out the gear drive teeth eventually. It never ground, but was very hard to get into reverse. I’ll put together a complete list of the items I found that would have certainly caused you some stress. Nick" I love the measuring, the cleanliness, the organization, the documentation, and the attention to detail..........I can't wait to shift from 1 to 2!!!!! Ryan "After the 1 to 2 shift, warranty is over. LOL Nick" Deal!! 30 minutes or 30 Kilometers which ever comes first:-) Ryan https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7121-image.jpg https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...7122-image.jpg |

Check out the sway bar 0.973" Then I used some hand me down Snap On tools Dad gave me (he was a Ford Mechanic.........oopsy shouldn't have shared that story here:-) Check out the old pickle fork, worked like a charm, boom, boom, boom, pop!! The transmission is really getting some love!!!
A spread sheet and everything, how professional!!!!! "Ryan, Your trans is nearly done. It is all together with the exception of the side cover. I am bidding on a pair of late model “bolt type” shift shafts. That auction is not over until Tuesday. I will be sending assembly pictures in a little while. I have to email them to myself from my cell phone then same them to my computer where I have my file on your rebuild. You will be getting multiple emails with these pictures due to my server restriction. Attached is a spreadsheet with all of the numbers etc. of everything as well as a portion on issues discovered and fixed. Let me know if you have any questions. Nick Morocco" Pictures to follow.
