My uncle had a 1964 Impala SS 409/425, White-on-white back in the '60s. He pulled the 409 numerals and replaced with '327' emblems. Apparently, there used to be a lot of street racing by the eat n' park on Banksville road in Pittsburgh, and he participated frequently. People couldn't believe they got beat by a '327'. As a tribute to that old street racer trick, I still have '283' emblems on my '65 Nova, even though it has a Vortec head, roller cammed 355 and M20 now. Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
novadude, I know that area on Banksville. That would look like a pretty good area to race (BITD, not now of course), then hit Eat-N-Park afterwards.

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
The Eat n Parks all over the Pgh , Homestead, Monroeville areas were Hotbeds,
Theee "Place to be" back in the day if you were looking for a race or to settle grudges. (a lot of money changed hands ) Bragging rights were one thing but they raced for "the Crown" of King of the Streets. Sunday nights seem dull today as I "rode with my Dad as a Kid" as he held or took the Crown many a times,....in any of dozens or so "Fast cars" he ran on the street and the tracks across the Tri-State area.....Very often the Heavy Hitters he beat regularly came back seeking, asking and paying good money for His Tune Ups. The Missile Silos off of Rt 130 was a back drop to many 'serious' street races .sometimes with bullets fired from the local police, high speed pursuits....crowds and too many cars to count were abundant |

Really? Why? |
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Where I come from, high performance engine emblems on front fenders were removed or exchanged for smaller CID emblems for fear of the car disappearing from your driveway in the middle of night!

Sometimes you didn't have to replace emblems with others. Just remove the one with the evil numbers below the crossed flags. Just a 327 car......

True story...... on my mothers name. She was there ! In the passenger seat of Dad's Corvette. The cops raced in , blocked cars in that were waiting to run.....people scattered, cars peeled out in all directions. Dad ran back to his Vette (I think it was his turn to flag/flashlight the previous run off) Started it up, open headers, slicks...etc...and launched it like a missile (as he & mom relayed it to us many different times......and the story never varied) Shots were Fired as he spread off........they didn't even try to chase it...... When home ,hiding the car and cooling off......he looked it over ,to his amazement there were NO Bullet holes in the rear of the car, him or my mom.... A few years ago I took Dad to the P.I.D. Reunion in Bridgeville.....he sat next to the Original Christmas tree where albums & albums , news prints, trophy's were on display for All to look at and read ..... A few "old guys" came up to him and asked , are you the 'Joe' with the Vette. ...Harrison City Missiles.....and the Bust ? Dad grinning ear to ear....said .. why ? Those guys said . We were there ! Dad. .... 'were you the cops who.. .... Response . No ! I'm the guy that stalled his car in front of the Cop cars. !!!!! I never saw a bunch of Old Guys go from Red to White back to Red in 5 seconds before.... tears, laughs, cheers, oohs and ahhhs. And handshakes, hugs all around as by then a nice crowd had gathered...... Mom passed 19 years ago. ...Dad is at every racetrack event he can be at. ..each week end. I heard the SAME STORY from these 3 as Mom & Dad. told it over the Years.... Tom |
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Awesome stories Tom. Your dad is the man, lol, and your mom sounds like she was pretty good support.

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
My Day 2 style L72 '68 Biscayne tribute is getting close to the "done for now" point. It was a running driving somewhat finished car when I got. I am working to make it a close memory to my original L72 car that is mentioned earlier in this thread. Some of the things I have done is replace non-period correct things like braided fuel line, split loom over the wiring, aftermarket steering wheel, fuel cell and other things. I also painted the black Rallye wheels body color and put narrower wheels and tires on the front. Most recent change was replacing cut down rear springs and air shocks with Moog stock replacement springs and KYB heavy duty shocks. Last thing in this stage will be installing a radiator/fan shroud. She is just about ready for Hot August Nights in Reno. Here are some pictures of the way she sits now. I am open and appreciative of suggestions to hit the vintage Day 2 mark. You can see more of the things I have been doing, including some videos, at the Biscayne My Way link in my signature.

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Motion hoods had the longest L88 scoop. My Camaro motion hood is that way. It is an original motion hood signed by the maker. This Nova hood must be a Motion. They were the only ones I ever saw that the scoop ended very close to the front of the hood.

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Just read all the pages and wow, I feel like i'm in the 70s (even if i'm born in late 80s, haha)
There was my dad Camaro L88 in the late 70s, he had sticker on the front of a fat rat with a thootpick in his mouth and hemi written on his belly, haha. http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/637829007.jpg http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/320495jackcamaro.png And this is the Chevelle he owned from late '70s to late '90s, this picture is from early 90s, an there'S an old Edelbrock tunnel ram behind me! http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/996723016.jpg N50-15s http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/616448030.jpg I'm a young (26) "day 2" and old drag cars enthusiast, keep posting! |
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
That is awesome Yann.....great pictures and the Rat with the toothpick drawing is really cool.
Don't tell any Hemi guys that story.....they'll go ballistic cause they're beloved Hemi never lost a race. Kurt |
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Where is that Camaro today? Good one Kurt! I'm doing some research on my '69 Camaro ex-racer and am finding it did some battle with Hemi cars when it was configured in B/S and SS/D. I must tell you, I'm beginning to get intrigued with some of those elephant engines......don't worry, I'm not jumping ship!!!

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Pat, I think your car would look awesome with real chrome reverse wheels. You can buy them again very reasonable. Don't get the chintzy multi bolt pattern but the real ones-they are reproduced again .. Get em reversed too and don't run hubcaps. You have lots of blue paint on your car..needs to be broken up with some chrome an the chrome reverse will be dead on for the 67-69 period. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Pat_Dilling</div><div class="ubbcode-body">My Day 2 style L72 '68 Biscayne tribute is getting close to the "done for now" point. Thanks for the ideas. Since this posting I replaced the 454 with a CE block L72. My current project is changing over to a short water pump and driver side alternator that would be correct for 68. It's getting closer and closer to the way I want it and more similar to my original car. |
Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Ouch!

Re: Dedicated Day 2 Thread
Kurt, Wow! That Camaro took a shot! That had to be more than a blown slick.....like blew an engine and got in its own oil at speed and tagged the wall......hard! When was that?
Pat, Love the Biscayne and eight tracks! I always liked white wheels myself, might be a little bland with the light Blue, but easy enough to try. And that '74 Malibu had a metamorphis!!! What a change......for the better! A very affordable and fun car that you can actually use! |

Comp Cams sticker from the 80s. I don't know if they still use this design or not. My grandfather got it when he put a cam in a 350 he built back in '87.
