Hershey spent a reported $1 million on getting its Reese's Pieces featured in the 1982 movie E.T. Director Steven Spielberg had originally wanted it to be the better-known M&M's in the scene, but Mars declined. Mars' loss was Hershey's gain: the company enjoyed a 65% increase in profits following the movie's release.

Ray-Ban's Wayfarer sunglasses had seen a steady decline in sales by the early 1980s. As a result, the brand hired a product placement company to get them featured on the big screen. After finding their way into 1983 movie comedy Risky Business, starring Tom Cruise, the shades sold a record 360,000 pairs, a big jump from the 18,000 that were sold the previous year.

Clearly it's not just sunglasses that Tom Cruise can sell. Jamaican beer Red Stripe is mentioned in the novel The Firm by John Grisham, so when it was adapted into a film the brand had a ready-made product placement opportunity. It's unclear whether any money changed hands but the brand certainly benefited from the shout-out. After Gene Hackman and Tom Cruise were seen sharing a Red Stripe beer in one scene, sales increased by more than 50% in the U.S., and the company sold a majority stake to Guinness for $62 million a few weeks later.

The release of Disney's Toy Story in 1995 lead to a mind boggling 4,500% increase in sales for the cult toy Etch-A-Sketch. When the company ran into hard times again in 1999, the conveniently timed release of Toy Story 2 in November of that year caused another surge that stopped the brand going under. Slinky was also revived by the franchise. When the first movie came out, it was no longer being made, but the toy's manufacturer received 20,000 orders after its release, giving the company a much-needed cash injection.

While most James Bond fans would know that 007's car of choice was an Aston Martin, that all changed in 1995 with the release of Golden Eye. BMW spent a reported $3 million in order to get the Z3 model into the film. The deal paid off in a big way: 9,000 orders came in within the first month of the film's release, representing an overall increase of $240 million in sales.

Ray-Ban is certainly no stranger to the realm of product placement, and in 1997 the brand made a shrewd move by getting featured in Men in Black. While many criticized the obvious pushing of the designer's Predator 2 sunglasses, Ray-Ban had the last laugh as sales of the product tripled after the movie's release, reaching a record $5 million.

Sportswear brand Under Armour struck gold when it agreed to provide the football uniforms for the film Any Given Sunday in 1999. The brand's founder Kevin Plank took a risk and spent $25,000 on an ad campaign based on the movie, launched in ESPN magazine shortly after its release. As a result the company went from sales of $1.3 million in 1999 to $5 million just one year later, and Plank was able to pay himself a salary for the first time since starting the company.

In one episode of TV show Friends, Rachel pretends her new apothecary table from Pottery Barn is actually a flea market find. The episode had a huge impact on sales for the furniture brand; one executive described it as "the gift that keeps on giving" as, allegedly, "phones light up with catalog requests every time it airs in syndication." Not bad considering the company didn't pay a penny to be featured. In July 2019 Pottery Barn launched a Friends Collection, complete with apothecary table.

Sideways had a surprisingly large impact on the California wine industry when it was released in 2004. One of the main characters, played by Paul Giamatti, often talks about his love of Pinot Noir. In the months following the film's release, sales of Pinot Noir shot up by 22%. In contrast, Merlot, which gets a negative mention in the Oscar-winning comedy, saw a sales dip of 2%.

Pontiac spent a reported $4 million in order to get its Solstice model in an episode of the American version of The Apprentice. Contestants on the reality show were tasked with designing a brochure for the car, and the episode also included a 60-second ad that offered 1,000 viewers the chance to be among the first to own the car. All 1,000 models were assigned within just 41 minutes, with thousands more people added to a waiting list.

The Lego Movie (2014) is basically an hour and a half of product placement for the iconic toy brand. While details surrounding the deal with Warner Bros remain unclear, Lego certainly benefited. The company saw profits increase 15% in the year following the movie's release, with total sales reaching a record $3.4 billion.

Modifying your truck's suspension to either improve its function off-road or just improve the way the truck looks is not a new idea. It's been going for pretty much as long as there have been trucks to modify. What's less common is a vehicle manufacturer offering its own suspension modification kits to customers, but that's exactly what Ford's doing for the Ranger and F-150, according to an announcement made by the company on Wednesday.

The kits include new front coilover shocks from Fox -- which you may know as the supplier for the suspension on the totally amazing Ford Raptor -- that provide your truck with a 2-inch lift in the front, thereby removing the factory rake of the suspension. Sounds pretty simple, right? So what does the kit's lift translate to in off-road ability?

Well, both the Ranger and the F-150 benefit from improved front ground clearance, approach and breakover angles. Specifically, a Ranger owner will see an approximate 21% increase in approach angle and a 10% increase in breakover angle. An F-150 with a 145-inch wheelbase sees approximately a 22% increase in approach angle and a 7% increase in its breakover angle.

The Ford Performance leveling kits can be ordered through your Ford dealer and should fit any four-wheel drive 2015 to 2019 Ford F-150 or 2019 Ranger. Expect to pay $1,495 for the parts. Installation is, of course, extra.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is the coastal defense, search & rescue, and maritime law enforcement branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the country's seven uniformed services. The Coast Guard is a maritime, military, multi-mission service unique among the U.S. military branches for having a maritime law enforcement mission (with jurisdiction in both domestic and international waters) and a federal regulatory agency mission as part of its mission set. It operates under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security during peacetime, and can be transferred to the U.S. Department of the Navy by the U.S. President at any time, or by the U.S. Congress during times of war. This has happened twice: in 1917, during World War I, and in 1941, during World War II.

Shouldn't the rockers be blacked out, the drip rails have chrome and the emergency brake cable attached to the lower shock mount plate?

Carroll Shelby was a true maverick. A man who could see the future and take advantage of that foresight. He was steadfast in what he wanted for his cars . . . unfortunately sometimes he became an obstacle in what he wanted versus what could be built. The 1967 GT 350 and GT 500 are perfect examples of this.

https://i.postimg.cc/fTjZ88XS/shelby-gt350-15.jpg

His front grille design included twin 7 inch "driving lights" AKA Hi-Beam Lights. He did no research into this design - he just liked it. Unfortunately it created a number of problems: First, not all states accepted this lighting design. Those that did not would not allow a Shelby GT to be registered. Second, the 1967 GTs were the first to be offered with factory A/C. By placing the lights in the middle of the grille, needed cooling air was blocked and cars easily overheated, especially the GT 500s.

https://i.postimg.cc/y82DHfQ6/878.jpg

So a second front grille design was used for those states with the lights placement issue and to retrofit those cars having overheating issues along with GT 500s with A/C

https://i.postimg.cc/6QQYkpPx/shelby-gt350-16.jpg

In his advertising, Shelby stressed not only performance but safe performance. His two callouts were the "competition approved overhead safety bar" and "eye level turn indicator and brake lights" . . . the famous "scoop lights."

The 1967 Shelby GTs were way behind schedule and way over budget. One of the real issues were all the fiberglass parts which made up a good portion of the 1967 Shelby GTs. The problem (which is very common to fiberglass parts being married up to metal parts) they didn't fit right and required a lot of hand massaging which was costly in time.

Ford sent one of their VPs to Shelby's LA airport offices to get the 1967 GTs back on track. When he arrived he saw the scoop lights. When asked to describe how they worked the VP looked at Shelby and demanded "who told you you could do that?" Shelby replied "no one. I thought of the idea myself." The VP then explained to Shelby that the lights he thought of were illegal in all 50 states. "Only emergency vehicles are allowed to have those kind of lights." So immediately, all those GTs that had the lights (approx. 200) would have to be modified so that they became "parking lights" - they came on when the lights were activated and were shut off when the lights were deactivated.

The 1967 Shelby GTs were taken out of Shelby's hands with Ford moving production to A O Smith in October of 1966 who quickly fixed the fiberglass parts issue. Then Ford terminated his LA airport facility in May of 1967.

Hertz has been putting their rental customers into hot performance cars since the 1960s, thanks to partnerships with Shelby. Their latest pairing will put 24 custom Camaro Zl1s and 200 tuned SS models into the company’s rental fleet, and into the hands of the vacationing and business-tripping alike.

The latest Hertz pairing is with Hendrick Motorsports, the team behind the #24 Camaro ZL1 sponsored by Hertz and driven by William Byron in the NASCAR Cup Series. To help celebrate the Hendrick/Hertz partnership, 24 Hertz-Hendrick Motorsports Camaro ZL1s will get Callaway supercharger upgrades and a smattering of adornment,s including sill plates, embroidered headrests, badging, and wheels, to set the 750-horsepower Camaros apart. Of course, they’ll also wear the signature black and yellow Hertz paint.

In addition to the ZL1s, the same cosmetic treatment will be applied to SS Camaros with the naturally-aspirated LT1 V-8, this time treated to Chevrolet Performance cold air intake and cat-back exhaust to up the output to 480 horsepower. There will be 200 Hertz-Hendrick Motorsports Camaro SS models distributed in major cities throughout the southern half of the country.

If you’re interested in driving one of the limited-edition Camaros, head to one of the sunny locations that will stock the V-8 pony cars starting this fall: Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Tampa, or Miami. If you prefer to pair your Camaro experience with chowder-filled sourdough bread bowls or live music, you can also find them in San Francisco and Nashville. Only some of those locations will stock the more limited ZL1, so check with Hertz if you’d like to claim a spot behind the wheel.
