Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
LOL.......The story and education continues......As we go back to the low charging rate issue......after the battery change the rate came up to the 13.5 - 13.7 zone.....so I assumed that that was the issue and everything was as good as it was gonna get...........So....As I am driving the car home a couple of days ago.......my biggest fear came true......As I was driving and slowing down, I noticed that the Radio was off and all the dash gauges were off........I also realized the engine wasn't running when I stepped on the brakes and there wasn't any vacuum for the Brakes to work.......Luckily there wasn't any traffic and I had plenty of room to stop.......Pretty Scary........so......The car just shut off.....WTF!!
I pulled over and turned the key and nothing........Humm!!........waited a minute and hit the key again and it started right up and drove normal the rest of the way home.......But.....I now have lost my faith in the car......so I get home and put the car in the garage......started it many times and everything was normal......So.....as I start thinking about it it seemed as if I had turned the key off as all power was lost......Humm!!!.......So.....What could cause that to happen......The only two things that I could think would be if the plug that feeds power to the fuse panel at the firewall lost contact or if the wires were loose or something happened at the Ignition Switch (I had an aftermarket switch in the car to eliminate some issues with the computer set-up).....So....I stopped and bought another switch at Frame-Up on the way home just in case........ I take the plugs off the fuse panel and clean everything with a wire brush and Electrical Contact cleaner.....I also spread out the connector blades just to make sure there would be contact.....Put everything back together and the car started fine.......so.....I decided to remove the Ignition switch just to make sure everything was tight.......pulled the switch out and had it hanging below the Dash and everything seemed tight......I started the car again and no issues.......so....I went to install the switch back in the dash and just about burnt my fingers on the Battery feed wires on the switch.......Hummm!!!Everything seemed tight but........being a Voltmeter guy I realized that Heat = Resistance.....So....As I looked closer I noticed that I didn't have any star washers on that terminal......So....I decided to put the new switch in and added star washers between all the terminals and tightened everything up again.....started the car up and looked at the Voltmeter and it was up in the 14.5 volt range and the wire was not Hot anymore......Bingo......now I really found out where the missing Volts were going........Lesson "Learned" again.........After 5600 miles the heat took it's toll on the switch.....and the Voltmeter was telling me all along there was a issue somewhere........Funny thing is that John at Speartech (Who did the computer harnesses) told me that there was a resistance issue somewhere in the system..........The Education continues......LOL |

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
I finally got the Strato-Bench seat deal closed and it's in transit.....won't be here till next week.......Hopefully between the three seats I will have enough parts to get one good seat....LOL.....Pic's when the seat arrives........
|
Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
I finally have the third seat.......This one is in excellent shape (the frame that is).......It is out of a 4 door car so the seat backs don't move, but I will be able to piece together parts from the first seat to make every work......

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
So.....After getting all the seats dis-assembled......It ended up that the seat back frames were the only things that could salavaged from the first seat.......the second seat had the complete power track assy and wire harness assy that was useable........the third strato bench seat (out of a 4 door) was the Gold mine for the rest of the parts........But....I had to adapt the moveable seat backs on to the non moveable 4 door frame.....I kept the rusted out original so I could compare the two and see the differences.....It ended up that there were two brackets welded on to the 4 door frame to keep the seat backs locked in position that were easy to cut off....and the tapped hole I needed for the seat stop bumper was already there.....simple fix......Then I just had to cut a little clearance in the frame for the Pivot links as the solid mounts were slightly different......
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01323.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01347.jpg The Latch mechanisms were in need of some TLC out of the first seat....they were Rusted solid.....had to take them apart and make some new pins and find new springs.....(Thanks McMaster-Carr)...... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01342.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01344.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01346.jpg Got the seat backs installed....we have to take the seat springs from the solid backs and add them to the moveable ones.... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01341.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01349.jpg Got the power seat switch mounted in the lower seat side trim........ http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01352.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01350.jpg Dave (I'm Rare) got me hooked up with a local upholsterer that really "Gets" it......The Strato bench started production in 67 and I'm putting it in the 66....so....no seat covers available.....But we ordered a set of covers and seat buns for 66 Bucket seats......the backs are the same.....and Mike (the Upholsterer) is going to build the bench seat bun out of the bucket buns and make the matching bench seat cover to suit....... I know this is much to do about nothing, but......It seems I make everything as complicated as possible......LOL......When we are finished I just hope its worth the effort and is comfortable n those long drives.....LOL......the bench seat that's in it now even though it's got new a new bun....is like sitting on a worn out mattress......Pretty Impressed with Mike as he was showing me how to rebuild the stock seat springs for more support and comfort........More pic's to come as Mike gets into the seat......Again........Ken makes eveything complicated.....Just hope its worth the effort...... |

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Did you get the floor brackets with any of the strato benches you bought?? They are different than the regular bench ones.
Lots of good reading between the biscayne build and this one. |

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
This car stuff is getting hard......Since MCACN is over, basically our car season is finished till next year in May when the Dells Automotion Show is......so.....I had the Survivor car on the lift doing some maintainance and I noticed that the passenger side axle seal had a very slight leak......So..I decided to fix it......As long as I had the car apart I was going to put in Ceramic pads as the ones on the car generated a lot of brake dust on the rims......So....I go to the local parts store and get a parts guy and the first question is "Sir.....year, make, and model".....( Now....I needed a stock rear axle seal,,,rear pads for a 85 Seville and front pads from a mid 90's Caprice).....After a lot of confusion (Imagine that!!!) and the guy coming back with a transmission yoke seal I decided it was time to leave.....LOL
So I go to the local Autozone and the guy there found the axle seals but, they didn't have any in stock and after a couple of minutes I could see it was time to leave there also....... I go to Advance Auto Parts and wait for the store manager to free up and was out of there in two minutes with everything I needed....... http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01360.jpg After taking everything apart.....again.........I found out how untalented I am..........Here's what I found.....when I installed the rear pads there is a stud on the inside face of the inner pad that was "SUPPOSED" to key into a slot in the piston......Sheesh!!! http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01361.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01362.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...t/DSC01363.jpg This car stuff is hard!!......I also ordered a new set of axles as the old ones had some corrosion in the seal areas and that's what was eating the seals after a period of time...I guess it's just called "Fine Tuning"....LOL |

Most parts guys now just want your serial number, so they can determine what equipment on that Vehicle from the factory. No parts books in dealers any more!!!

Re: Next Years Power Tour Car
Got the car back together today and another piece of the puzzle was solved........When I originally put the car together with the complete 4 wheel disc brake system from CPP......I had nothing but problems trying to get the rear Parking Brake/Disc (85 Seville calipers) to function......just couldn't get them to work correctly (there is a ratcheting mechanism that is built into the piston and when the E-Brakes are applied....It automatically keeps everything adjusted and the mechanical function serves as the E-brake) I tried everything and ended up cutting and modifying the pull cable bracket to get a basic function of the E-Brake as the pads were loose and the ratchet function did nothing to tighten them up............
So.......while everything was apart, I decided to put Ceramic brake pads on the car as there was quite a bit of brake dust with the CPP pads....The fronts went right in.....but I was concerned about the issues I had in the past with the rears........So......As I was installing them, I noticed that they were about 3/32" thicker per pad than the pads I took out.....Hummm!!!......as I was putting everything back together it was becoming very clear why I had all those issues before....the New pads supplied with the kit were actually thinner than they should have been and they were at the limits of the ratchet piston out adjustment at that point.......Duhhh!!!......There was another person in the area that was going thru the same problems at the same time I was doing mine....we both figured we didn't know what we were doing and never questioned the pads as supplied with the kit.......With the thicker pads everything works perfectly.............Another Lesson .......with Graduation papers this time.....LOL.....( The other guy stopped trying to get them to work and put the drums back on.....I just called him and told him what the problem was.......Boy!!.....Am I smart!!!!) |

More Education..........After finding and fixing the issue with the front sway bar link binding against the lower control arm......I took the car for another front end alignment.....had the camber set to -.7 degree and the caster set to -4.8 degrees.............."ALL" the little issues are gone.....Steers just like it should now......It was close before, but Purr-Fect now......Once the seat gets finished.......This "Beater" might be a Keeper......LOL
