Re: 72 TA : New Project
Got the shaker back today. Assembled all the guts (linkage, wires and the two solenoids that are the same as a 69 Camaro cowl induction hood) and it actually works. 1972 was a weird year. Pontiac got smart and instead of using an entire Rube-Goldberg contraption working off the carburetor with a ton of extra parts, they used the existing turbo 400 kickdown switch and worked the solenoids off of that. That is why every '72 Trans Am, regardless of it being a 4-speed or automatic, has a turbo 400 kickdown switch attached to the gas pedal under the dash.
The only problem was adjusting the metal bracket to allow the switch to operate but not restrict full, wide open throttle. That took about an hour of assembly, test, remove, bend, reassemble, test...lather, rinse, repeat. You know the drill. The switch: http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/kickdown.jpg The shaker, installed: http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005169.jpg The contraption in action: http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/l...h_S7005168.jpg |

Found a guy on ebay selling the correct reflectorized month decals for California plates:
http://cgi.ebay.com/RED-DEC-california-l...=item53ddb426b1 So now I have the correct year and month expiration for the December, 1971 delivered car. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/P4220001.jpg |

Re: 72 TA : New Project
FYI Steve, I don't think CA went to the month decals (DEC) until the '80s. I think you want just the '72 decal and nothing on the other side if you want it to look as-delivered/new plates. Perhaps another CA veteran like Charley or ? can elaborate.
|
Re: 72 TA : New Project
Anyone with California knowledge feel free to comment. I have seen some vintage photos of cars with the month sticker on the left side. Either way it covers the later "73" sticker that someone stuck there.
|
Re: 72 TA : New Project
I can tell you for certain that the indetation for the month sticker has been on the plates since '63, and every original black plate I have had has had a month tag afixed to it. Not sure about the pre '63 yellow plates.
Did this car really come from Roseville up by Charley? I stay in Marysville all the time, and just had dinner in downtown Roseville a couple weeks ago, and I did not see or recall any GM dealer there. I wonder if it is still there. You're car is flippin' awesome, BTW. |

My 63 California plates had the depressions on both sides but came with no sticker on either side. I bought them new in 1963 and there was never any sticker on them. I brought the car back to Indiana late in 63 so I can't say what happened in 64.

This is the original plate on my son's Nova. I guess not registered since 97. Can't make out the sticker in the photo, I'll take a closer look in the morning. http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q...3/100_9983.jpg |
Re: 72 TA : New Project
The month sticker began with plates expiring in 1976. So the 72 wouldnt have a month sticker when new.

Re: 72 TA : New Project
Got the reproduction shaker drain hose nipple from Norwood, who is a member here and on the Performance Years website. He makes a lot of the correct, reproduction shaker parts for these cars. From the factory, the nipple was originally epoxied to the bottom of the shaker.
The original Pontiac part was actually a plastic nipple but Norwood's repro is made of brass and holds up a lot longer. It also bonds to the shaker better. That was one of the major problems with the plastic ones - Pontiac used an epoxy that didn't bond to the plastic nipple and they all fell off, taking the drain hose with them. (I was lucky and still had the original hose and nipple from the run-over original shaker) Once painted flat black, there isn't any way to tell the difference. I was able to clean up the original drain hose, which is a very unique, thinwall rubber tube, almost like an oversized radiator overflow hose. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005197.jpg The drain hose on power steering-equipped cars routes down behind the pump and goes through the loop made by the metal portion of the power steering pressure hose. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005198.jpg Got the correct "RT" coded reproduction shaker air cleaner decal in the mail today from ECS Automotive and installed that, too. You'd be horrified by how incorrect the emissions and air cleaner decals are that are sold by the major parts venders. Not even close. In fact, the decal offered by the big resto parts houses for this application actually has the part number for a 1980's air cleaner on it, and they still sell it as the so-called "correct" decal for 70-72 T/A's. I'll stick with ECS - they make perfect reproductions. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005199.jpg |
Re: 72 TA : New Project
I just didn't like how the repro vinyl welting was fitting and looking on the front flares, especially around the curve under the fender edge. So I ended up cleaning and painting the original welting for the fronts. The rear flares' welting was too damaged to re-use.
(Anybody have a nice original pair of rear welting?) Why can't anyone reproduce the welting in the correct original material - it was a flexible, rubbery, latex-like material molded in color, - almost the same material as refrigerator door seals and not a hard, grey plastic/vinyl. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005216.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005215.jpg |

Re: 72 TA : New Project
Thanks to a tip from one of the guys at the Performance Years website and his epic restoration thread of a Lucerne Blue 72 T/A, I installed the correct temp sender wire retainer. His insane attention to detail makes me look like a complete hack!
http://forums.performanceyears.com/f...06&page=25 I found some extra brackets in that box of free 72 T/A stuff I got from Southernfriedcj (Jim), a month ago. I also located an original one of the special black straps in my toolbox misc drawer. (I never throw anything away...ever). (Anyone got another one of these in their toolbox?) I installed those four original valve cover bolts I got in that free box of parts, too. :-) http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005243.jpg |

Re: 72 TA : New Project
Looks pretty close. The problem with the nut and bolt supply places is that they have a minimum $ amount for orders. I cant see paying $30 when I only need that one little piece of plastic. (Yeah, I know, I'm a cheap old bast@#d)

Re: 72 TA : New Project
Steve, I may have one of those. Is it possible to give me the measurements or a photo of it off the engine to confirm? If I do, it's yours. The one I have here has a P-4007 on it.

Re: 72 TA : New Project
Rick,
Yes, that's the one! I PM'd you my address and I'll add you the the ever-expanding list of invitees to the who-knows-when, unveiling of the car! At this rate I should just sell time shares in the passenger seat. |

Fusick Automotive (Olds vendor) sells those clips individually. Male and female end right, wraps around the wire and then snaps together? Wire harness tie down strap, PN 3728 1.50 each.

Is that the final piece of the puzzle? Can't wait to see the pictures of the finished product.

Re: 72 TA : New Project
Actually the polyethylene front valance will be the last body piece of the puzzle when it gets done...and then getting the hood section of the stripe decal that has been on freakin' back order since last September and I am not happy about that.
I can just see the car being all done and not having that decal section, still. Sorry for the rant Hopefully, I'll be picking up the beak this weekend and updating the never-ending story. |

Rick,

Re: 72 TA : New Project
Picked up the beak today and installed it. The 70-72's are pretty easy. The 73's are the hard ones since they have a ton (literallly) or extra 5 mph impact bracing inside the nose.
I just attached the little bracket do-hickies to the inside of the nose and then hung it in place with the bolts. The beak lined right up. I guess all that playing and realigning of the fenders a few months back, worked out well. The real trick is to have the car jacked up by two floor jacks under the rear of the subframe. You want the front wheels to be off the ground and hanging. This way the front of the car is warping down. You attach the urethane nose, line it up and bolt it down. Then when you let the car off the jacks, it pulls the urethane nose closer to the fenders. If you try to attach the urethane nose while the car is on the ground, it tends to leave a gap between the fender edges and the nose. I then took her for a ride around town. Definitely have to get used to these low revving Pontiacs. They don't seem to rev up very fast but they do have a ton-o-power! It was fun to see the shaker working, too, when you stomp the gas pedal. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005249.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005247.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005248.jpg |

Re: 72 TA : New Project
Glad you're all enjoying it!
It's kind of like that old fable "Rock Soup" where an old starving beggar comes into town and tells people he is cooking a feast for them of rock soup. To partake in the feast, all each townsperson needs to do is bring one small item to put in the soup. All the townsfolk contribute...a large pot, a chicken, vegetables, broth, etc., and at the end, the starving beggar places a small rock in the pot as his contribution. They all then feast on the soup. I feel like the old beggar, since most of the townsfolk here on this site have contributed a small part (literally and figuratively) throughout the years. Re: 72 TA : New Project
My cousin down in Calgary has a 72 T/A. 455 HO with a 4 gear, no A/C, numbers matching. He is the 2nd owner, bought it in the mid 70's. I can remember riding in the back as a young kid, it had a rumble to it. He still has it, all together, but needs to restore it. As far back as I can remember it was in my great aunts garage until her passing, then was stored somewhere else, now it is in his nest. I bug him every chance I get that he needs to getter going, but he's always busy with work. I showed him this thread, so I believe he has been following along. Maybe he'll see my comments and get the ball rolling on it some time.
Njsteve, heck of a job you have done, and a excellent reference for my cousin or anybody else willing to take there 72 to this level. I hope you get a 100 pages outta this thread. |

Re: 72 TA : New Project
Received the uber-detailed hood latch mechanism from Norwood (a member here and on the Performance Years website), who shamed me into getting one for the never-ending project. Installed it just in time for my hood to arrive.
Here is the installed hood latch looking all pretty and original. Thanks Norwood! Youdaman! http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005267.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005265.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005266.jpg You might notice the rubber vacuum line wrapped on the hood spring. It helps to prevent the huge gouges that the hood spring makes in the paint on the underside of the hood. Looks kind of cheesy but until someone comes up with a better idea, this seems to be the prevailing idea. |
Re: 72 TA : New Project
Had to get the trailer out of the bushes this morning. The thing hasn't gone for a ride in about 2 years. Greased the wheel bearings and checked the tires. Of course I had another blowout on the way back from PA, today. I think I'll stick with the Goodyear Marathons. I seem to have better luck with them. One of the 4 year old Carlisles let go. Time to buy 3 more tires to match the one remaining Goodyear Marathon I bought in 2008. I lose more trailer tires to sun damage and age than tread wear. I don't think I have ever actually worn out a tire in 30 years of trailering. The sun is the worst thing for tires. That ozone just cooks them.
Anyway, here is the car after trailering it all the way to the bodyshop in PA and then back. Had to drop the shaker off for a touch up and still waiting on the last body panel: the polyethylene valance. http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005260.jpg http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7005261.jpg And I'm waiting on the Phoenix Graphixs hood stripe decal to see how that compares with the Stencils and Stripes decals on the rest of the car. It's supposed to get here on Tuesday. Check here for the the whole story of ten months of waiting on the S&S hood decal: http://forums.performanceyears.com/f...d.php?t=635128 |
Re: 72 TA : New Project
OK maybe I'll stay away from the Goodyear Marathons after reading all the bad reviews that mirror my experiences over the years. Anybody recomment a 225/75R15 trailer tire that doesn't explode like it has a two year timed fuse in it?
|
Re: 72 TA : New Project
Now that Trans Am is starting to come together...I have a bad feeling that you are going to removing some striping this week, but lets hope I am wrong. Steve please do me a favor and measure and post the width of your current S&S roof stripe.
|
Re: 72 TA : New Project
We've actually had great luck with the Marathon's on all of the boat trailers in the family. Carlisle not so much.
