When Ford put together the Thunderbolt program to win Super Stock, Mercury also wanted to go racing. But Ford didn't want the competition. So Mercury was forced to run 10" slicks and compete in FX class versus 7" which was the max for Super Stock.

Ford wasn't sure that the NHRA would accept the Thunderbolt Fairlanes for Super Stock competition, so to hedge their bets they continued with the 427 Galaxie Lightweight program.
