I've only been on this site for about a year but this thread is one I always look forward to seeing any updates on. Between this and kwhizz's 37 Ford build thread a guy could learn years of technical information in one sitting.

Impressive work and a great reference for others. Thanks for sharing Steve. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

Re: 72 TA : New Project

Celebrating the first day of Spring 2010! I have only been working on this car for 23 seasons. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif

I just got back from my first actual drive of the car in six years!!! Prior to today the only drive I ever took it on was the original test run around the block when I bought it on 11/11/2004.

I buckled my 9 yr old son in the passenger seat and we snuck the car out and drove it around the neighborhood for about 4 miles, through all 4 gears and all 4 barrels.

I dont know what all this hoopla is about the M22 rockcrusher making whining noises. It is relatively silent compared to the industrial, cast iron, A-833 four-speed in my Charger. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

The T/A does have a bit of pep, I must say. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif

As usual, my boy interupted my enjoyable, celebratory test drive with his sarcastic: "That's enough speedy-fast, Dad. Let's go home and throw the baseball around"

Kids. They just don't appreciate good fun! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Here's the offspring about 5 years ago (or as the boy says: "When I was a kid") installing the body on the subframe.

Couldn't wait any longer. After staring at that refinished steering wheel in my clothes closet for years now, I finally installed it this afternoon.

Now the back half of the car is finished, and the middle half of the car is finished. Just need the front half finished and I am finally finished with all three halfs of this Cecil B. Demille production.

(P.S. You know what they say: 90% of people can't do basic arithmatic...and the other half can't spell either.) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Does anybody have any extras of these trim screws? They are the weird hex/philips screws that I believe are the correct ones used for attaching the flares. I need another 10 of them.

They were used on a ton of different GM applications. On the Firebirds they were also used to hold the rear window filler panel (the one between the window and the trunklid) in place.

Re: 72 TA : New Project

Belay that order!

Turns out that those aren't the correct screws after all. The guys on the Pontiac website provided me with photos of what the original screws are...and they coincidentally look just like the regular, round indented, philips head wheelwell trim screws I randomly grabbed out of my toolbox and used on the car in place of what I thought were the right screws. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

You gotta love when the haunted tool box knows more than you about what the right fastener is, for the job at hand. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

Re: 72 TA : New Project

It's nice to get your faith in humanity refreshed once in a while. I got a recent email from southernfriedcj (Jim), here on the site asking me if I wanted the leftover box of parts he had found in the garage from the 72 T/A he sold a while back. I replied that I'd take whatever he had. I asked him what he wanted and he said just pay the shipping and you can have it all!

You can imagine my astonishment when two large boxes arrived and all this stuff was in it. It was like Christmas in April! A lot of the misc parts were things I had been searching for, unsuccessfully, for years.

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7004970.jpg

Here's some of the stuff:

The original, correct zinc chromate colored, cowl weatherstrip clips (next to the not-so-accurate repro clip)
http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7004972.jpg

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7004977.jpg

The correct A/C compressor rear bolt spacer:

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7004979.jpg

Original 455HO valve cover bolts (yes, they had their own bolts as they were longer than the regular Pontiac bolts due to the fact that the 455HO used a much thicker valve cover gasket to allow the valve covers to clear the rocker oiling guides.)

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7004975.jpg

An original set of rear bumper guards - very rare item:

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7004976.jpg

An original 455HO A/C compressor rear bracket (yeah, they had their own unique part designed with a cut out to clear the shaker hot air stove pipes.)

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...b/S7004973.jpg

A really nice set of the assembly line, heavy gauge steel 1972 exhaust tips (after cleaning and chiseling off the remnants of the still attached exhaust pipes):

Re: 72 TA : New Project

Thanks to Norwood, one of the members here and on the PerformanceYears.com website, I have the correct shaker rivets.

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/360.jpg

My bodyman was very familiar with these types of rivets since he does a lot of Corvette work and they use a similar rivet, so he got the honor of installing them.

First step was drilling out the hole in the repaired fiberglass shaker lid:

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/358.jpg

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/359.jpg

The rivet mandrels:

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/365.jpg

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/363.jpg

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/364.jpg

The shaker is then set on top of the rivet and mandrel and the upper mandrel is gently tapped.

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/366.jpg

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/368.jpg

njsteve 04-16-2010 03:53 AM

Re: 72 TA : New Project

As the rivet is being supported by the lower mandrel and not by the fiberglass, it prevents any damage to the surrounding fiberglass.

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/369.jpg

The peened over rivet:

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/r...15268b/370.jpg

The finished bottom and top:
