Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.
So they really did have factory screw-in studs and pushrod guide plates! That's something I've always wondered about. I know many people don't think Camaros were even built after 1969, but I think the 1970 Z-28 is undoubtedly the best Z-28 ever built. Maybe even the best "factory-built" Camaro of the era. Those 67-69 302 CID Z's just lack the torque of that wonderful LT-1. That LT-1 was one of Zora's babies and he loved it as such. So, we have the best, original example of the best Camaro, IMHO, ever built. And it's a Rally Sport! I'm insanely jealous.

Check out the MCACN website for a Press Release on Charley's car. This incredible Z will be the very first car that will be scrutinized for Vintage Certification at the new show. Bashton |

Chickened out on leaving the orig oil and filter on the car, drained the oil and changed the filter. Obvious from paint on edge of drain plug gasket that pan was painted with plug installed. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/390602-002.JPG [/ QUOTE ] I had to register to say two things. 1st CONGRATS ON THE FANTASTIC FIND! 2nd Please tell me you used an oil that is high in zinc. Most modern oils do not have enough zinc to protect a flat tappet cam. I would hate to see a cam lobe go flat and possibly destroy that engine. This is the main reason why I joined. I am THAT concerned about that oil you used. |
Awesome website Charlie...!
Thanks for sharing it with the world. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Knowing Charlie he a supply of the old oil back in the day.

Re: Awesome website Charlie...!
Patrick. I think I filled it with Mobil One and added some Marvel Mystery Oil. It will probably sit most of it's life so about the only other thing to add is something like STP that clings to the walls real well. Suggestions ?

Sell it to me..

The demonstrations that I've seen on TV are pretty impressive, the stuff is actually absorbed into the metal. I'm thinking about adding it in my 70 Z along with the older version of Rotella with the high levels of ZDDP. Anyone here have an opinion one way or the other about Z Max??? |

Re: Awesome website Charlie...!
Charlie, great site! This will be a big help as I restore my 70 LA built Z-28. If you get a chance, can you post dimensions of the original stripes using a tape measure much the same way the assembly manual shows, for others that want correct stripes on their 70 LA built Z-28's.
Thanks, Paul |
Re: Awesome website Charlie...!
I just spoke to an engine builder last weekend that swears by Comp Cams oil additive to make up for the lost ingredients in most of today's oils. (i.e. Zinc, etc.)

(i.e. Zinc, etc.) link to product info [/ QUOTE ] I would not use the sybthetic oil at all. Most modern synthetics have no additives that are necessary for older engines with flat tappet cams as they were primarily designed for moderm engines with roller valvetrains and such. You want an oil with good "cling". I would recommend Valvoline VR1 race oil and a bottle of Comp additive. Fortunately, in this case you are dealing with a car that even though it's relatively old, the valve spring pressures are modest and the parts are already mated. I guess one area that could be a potential hazard is if a lifter stuck in the bore and failed to rotate. That would flatten the cam in no time. MB |

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.
What about GM Engine Oil Supplement (EOS). I understand it is high in Zinc. It better be, I'm using it in my Chevelle.

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.
Sure...$9.00/bottle for SYC members.

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.
Several of the oils from Amsoil meet or exceed the zinc/phosphorus levels necessary for flat tappet engines without any extra additives.

I didn't say "can I buy it" :-)

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.
I run valvoline racing VR1 10w30 oil and a bottle of comp cams break in lube in my 406 as per my builders recommendation. I've got one of the xtreme energy hydraulic flat tappet cams in it with the high ramp rates/spring pressures and he said that was the best prevention for wiping a cam lobe. As others have mentioned, I would not run a synthetic oil.

Anyone here have an opinion one way or the other about Z Max??? [/ QUOTE ] Here's a link to one of Z-Max's numerous consent decrees with the Federal Trade Commission over false and misleading advertising; they're in violation AGAIN, and the current complaint is in litigation. When you sell something for 50 times what it costs to make it, you make lots of money to pay lawyers to keep the FTC tied up in court and off your back, and you can spend lots of marketing money (like paying Bruton Smith millions to call his new dragstrip "Z-Max Dragway"). http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2001/02/zmax1.shtm https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif |

Re: Awesome website Charlie...!
Just got back from the website. That really is a great car and you really did the Camaro Universe a great service by providing and sharing the pictures that you did. Most greedy owners would have locked that car away for bragging rights instead of sharing it like you did. The '70 Z-28 is one of the VERY few Musclecars where I actually prefer the TH400 version over the 4-speed. I just have some fond memories of driving them, clicking that horseshoe shifter and chirping those rear tires! Anyway.......kudos to you for sharing that time warp of a car.....it couldn't possibly have a better owner.

Re: Awesome website Charlie...!
That is spectacular.
