Eddie Hill was qualifying for a 1997 event at Sonoma when his car suffered severe vibration as he crossed the finish line. The car went out of control and was completely destroyed.

Hill had two broken toes and a shoulder contusion, which were not serious injuries.

The run had been fast enough to make Hill the fastest qualifier, and Hill wanted to race his backup car in the first round on the day after the accident. The NHRA had a rule that the car used for qualifying had to be used in the event, so instead of doing something smart and keeping the racing going and making the fans happy, they said no.

The reaction was so bad to that botched call, the rule was changed to allow racers to race on race day even if they do not use the same car.

Not sure if this is a real car or one that has been photoshopped. Caught my eye while I was looking for something.

I am sure you have seen photos like this one captured by the Hubble Telescope. What you may not know is that ALL photos are captured in Black & White.

When Hubble scientists take photos of space, they use filters to record specific wavelengths of light. Later, they add red, green, or blue to color the exposures taken through those filters. The result is full-color images that have a variety of purposes for scientific analysis.

The imager chips (and cameras) developed at the Sarnoff Labs in Princeton transmitted color images. They are in the Hubble and many NASA satellites. I saw a satellite image of a sailboat in Greece and I could read the number on the sail. I helped develop the microlithography process that made those chips.
We also developed IR imagers which are very popular with the military.:flag:

In August of 1969 Ford built 14 Boss 302 Mustangs to promote the car at dealer intro shows. All are Bright Yellow with a Black interior. The only noticeable differences from all other 1970 Boss 302s is how the rear quarter panel stripe edges up into the side marker light and the rear taillight assemblies - they are chrome not black. I have included a photo of a latter production car so you can compare them. Not all 14 had the same options. Some had the shaker hood and Magnum 500 wheels while others did not. All had the rear spoiler and rear window slats and 1969 Goodyear Polyglas GT F60x15 RWL tires though.

My second all time favorite car behind the 1969 Camaro. And no, I never owned one but . . .

I turned 18 in May of 1969 and was living at Grossingers Hotel in Liberty, NY. One of my friends from Traffic, whose name escapes me, had come home from Vietnam and had purchased a brand new 1969 Charger R/T in Bright Blue with a White Vinyl Top and White Bumble Bee Stripe. It was fully loaded with A/C, Power Windows, Disc Brakes, Steering, Magnum 500 wheels with a Blue interior. "Lee, I am going to take you to NYC for your 18th Birthday and celebrate it right!" So around 9PM the day before my actual birthday, we left the hotel for the 2 hour ride from Liberty to NYC. Arrived a little after 11PM and immediately drove to a popular club/bar (can't remember the name) where on the stroke of Midnight, I officially turned 18. Left right afterwards and drove out to Queens to a bowling alley which was one of the strangest I had ever seen. It looked like a Bus Stop. The entire complex (100 lanes) was below ground. Here we hooked up with a bunch of my friend's buddies who proceeded to take him away to parts unknown.

So here I am in Queens with a bunch of people I don't know and one of them says, "Lee, let's take a ride." OK - sounds good to me. He had the keys to the Charger so we climbed in and off we went. About 10 minutes later we are stopped at a light and a Maroon 1969 Z/28 pulls next to us. The light turns green and we are off like a shot beating the Z/28 to the next light where we pick up a 1968 GTO. Again we win and for the next 2 hours, we are street racing and winning every single race. The guy I am with is a hell of a driver. We finally wind up back at the bowling alley where my friend has returned. It's now about 3AM. So more drinking (not me) and my friend is getting really drunk. I remind him I have to be at work at 10AM. "No problem Lee - one more for the road." 3 drinks later, it's 4:30 AM and my friend has passed out. I turn to the guy who took me street racing and tell him to get my friend into the back seat of the Charger, it's time to go.

With a few easy directions, I am now headed back to Liberty getting on the NYS Thruway headed to RTE 17. I have never driven the Charger but because it has an automatic, not too difficult. I figure I should be OK as long as I keep my foot out of the accelerator. To be honest, it's power scared me a bit. But I do notice that the Tach is running about 3000 RPM which seems a bit high for 70 MPH and the exhaust is "growling." I look down and realize I am in 2nd gear - 100 miles since I left Queens. Shift it into Drive - that's much better. Got us back to the hotel around 7AM. I park the car where we are living, tuck the keys in my friends pocket - he is still passed out - grab 2 hours of sleep and get to work on time.

So no, I never owned a 1969 Charger R/T but I did drive one. Only not fast

Did you know . . .

Buick was entering into a licensing agreement with the R & R group The Doors to use their megahit Light My Fire in a Buick promotion titled "C'mon Buick Light My Fire." Unfortunately Jim Morrison who did not like Buicks wasn't at the original licensing meeting. When his signature was required to make the deal, he said no - to a licensing fee of $100,000. So Buick went ahead with a variation with no music and paid no fee to The Doors.

The 1970 Olds Rallye 350 was not a big seller. In fact many dealers still had them on their lot when the 1971s arrived. In an effort to jazz them up, some dealers even took the front and rear bumpers off replacing them with chrome units to make them more sellable along with adding chrome trim rings

My friend Al and I drove down to Miami on Xmas break (1968-1969) from Boston in Al's 1969 SS 396 Chevelle where we were at Babson College. 10 day road trip; 2 days to get to Miami, 6 days of sun and fun and 2 days to get back to college. Al's girlfriend was vacationing in Miami from school with a girlfriend and had promised Al she would put us up in her room.

After a straight through drive we get to within 10 miles of Miami when the Chevelle starts to overheat. We immediately pull into a local Chevrolet dealer - we had left the Turnpike about 20 miles ago and were traveling on A1A for a change of pace. The water pump had failed, but Al's car is still under warranty so it's just an hour out of our schedule to get it fixed. While waiting for the repair to be completed, I walked over to the Plymouth dealer next door to look around and spot this 1969 GTX sitting in the entrance of the Service Department with two guys standing next to it. I commented on how nice the car looked and asked why they were there. The owner of the car says to me, "we are headed to Miami on a road trip from college when the water pump failed." I start laughing and the guy looks at me and says, "you think that's funny?" So I replied, "yeah, I do. Take a short walk with me." So we walk over to the Chevy dealer and I introduce them to Al and explain why we are there. Everyone starts laughing.

So for the next 3 days we spent all our time with the guys with the GTX and with the girls that Al knows. It is interesting to note that we never street raced the GTX and there were plenty of times we took both cars to dinner, the beach, the movies, etc.

Built for NHRA's Stock/Super Stock (C/SA NHRA Stock Class or SS/GA NHRA Super Stock Class). It is interesting that Dodge picked the upscale GTS for the installation of the 440 Magnum engine instead of the Swinger 340. Bucket seats were standard on the GTS and weighed more than a bench seat. The console was standard on the M code GTS. No power steering, no power brakes, no manual trans. 3 speed auto was standard with an 8.75 rear; standard 3.55 or optional 3.91. The cars were built by Hurst Performance not Dodge. Dodge shipped 383 GTS cars to Hurst where Hurst pulled the 383, installed a special K member, new motor mounts and the 440/375 HP engine plus new exhaust manifolds, oil pan and heat shielding made up the conversion. All cars were dealer ordered. The cost of the 440 engine option was $363.65. Because Dodge used the 383 GTS for the 440 option the sticker price was over $4000.

The 1969 M code GTS came about when in 1968 Mr. Norm took one of his 440 GSS Darts to Chrysler to show them the 440 would fit. Chrysler liked it so much, they offered it in 1969 as a factory option.

The car was great for straight line acceleration but handled very poorly due to the extra weight on the front end and the manual steering.

Red snapper is a luxury. The Pacific version is called "Rockfish," but can technically be marketed as uber-expensive and Atlantic-derived red snapper because, well, red snapper is still technically what it is. The former obviously has a different taste and feel, which means fish companies are sneaky when it comes to tricking consumers into thinking they're getting the version with better quality. Tsk, tsk.
