This 63 Polara 500 convertible was documented by G.G. as an original 425 horse Max Wedge car with a TorqueFlite. It had a date correct drivetrain and was bid to $175K.

This 70 Hemi Cuda was advertised as a numbers matching 4 speed car with a 3.54 rear and 2 build sheets. It was an original sheet metal car with 16K miles. It sold for $270K.

Sure seems like an inordinate amount of "matching numbers" to me. Absolutely no reflection to the photographer who took the time to shoot and post the pics....a BIG THANK YOU for that, but I'm having trouble believing that all those high horse cars somehow escaped the street wars and drag strips "unharmed"? I know I'm a little skeptical.

Best keep in mind that matching numbers means just that, the #'s match. Sorry to say but in today's world, it has nothing to do with original engines...other than maybe trying to make someone think it does. [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif[/img] Personally I always consider matching #'s or "restoration engine" type phrases = restamp unless 'born with' or something specifically stating in plain English that it is THE original engine. Same with trans, rear, distributor etc...#'s matching only means the same part/casting/stamping #'s but nothing more. That all said, even claims of originality mean little anyway until verified by a trusted source. The short form version of all this...guilty until proven innocent! The majority of cars at this auction do not have an owner or representative present to talk to about the car so I just get my information from the auction description of the car which is written up by the consigner. Numbers matching no longer means born with original drivetrain like it used to. It simply means the drive train is correct for the car. Most of the write-ups mention factory documentation as well, but you rarely see even copies of that documentation displayed with the car. I try to only post photos of legit cars and not clones, but I am by no means an expert in determining whether or not a car is legit. I'm glad you're enjoying the photos, and if anyone knows that one of the cars I post a photo of is a clone speak up. You won't hurt my feelings.
