Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Thanks Jeff - always good to compare setups. Ours is pretty close to yours:
Our setup: • BZ1, 3x3 (I was told! Crank does say 3”) Dyno 125 cam • 33mm, .8 & .7, 57 pilot with 195 main, mixture screw ¾ turns out • Polar Jr primary clutch with 15-28-22 ramps, purple spring, 12 grams on the arms • Gaged secondary, 38 helix, blue spring, 4th hole • 14/84 sprockets =’s 6.00 gear • 18x8x8 tires • Last run: o RT = .014 60' = 1.929 330' = 5.502 660' = 8.763 MPH = 73.73 CHT - start = 153 EGT - start = 624 CHT - end = 239 EGT - end = 957 After conferring with others, and a few conversations with Huddleston, I've made some changes: - took 2 grams off the arms, so I've now got 10 grams on them - put the red spring into the Gaged secondary, probably the same effect as the Gaged specific 'blue' spring but its more common and an easier reference point - put the 38 (roller) helix into the 5th hole to slow the engagement down a bit - resetting the timing, was probably 150 thou in the hole, and will go to 350-400 thou - installing a new NGK B6HS plug, had an NGK from the Yenko in there - probably not much impact, but... - moved the rear sprocket / hub so that the chain is dead center between the frame rails. prior owner had the hub on backwards - installed new rear axle bearings - installed new brake rotor and pads, corrected the caliper install as it was literally floating - prior owner had it installed wrong - changed main jet from a 195 to a 185 to get the EGT temps up at the big end - changed fuel bowl to a Huddleston unit with the quick change jet option, which means that I removed the acc pump rod There's probably more, but I'm tired of working on it - and need to run it to find out where we are. Season starts this Saturday, but we will miss Day 1 because of a baseball game. Might get a TnT in on Friday night. |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
At least we are doing our part to help the economy - bbbenny!
Been racing quite a bit, have the car pretty much dialed in - now the pressure is on the driver, and quite frankly it's taking a toll with 5 red lights in the last 8 runs. The car leaves nice, just a nice wrinkle in the sidewall, no major issues - except the red bulb! So, we are trying to order some offset spindles for the car to add some front end stagger and slow him down a little - I might take the cheaper route and loosen the throttle cable a little. The launch - this one was an .001 green! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h68/aacorp/Launch.jpg Even have time for a wiffle ball game at Quarter Aces! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...wiffleball.jpg Looking forwar to the trek to Bristol Dragway in a couple of weeks for the big event! Enrolled Ben in a Jr Dragster School too, we hope to improve a bit on our season, |

That is just too cool Marlin!

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Went to TnT last Friday night for the sole purpose of working on green lights - had 3 green out of 4 after we put some slack into the throttle cable, and lowered the air pressure in the front tires. Not too bad, gave us hope for Saturday.
Only one time run on Saturday due to the pending rain, Ben cut an .008 light - but it was nowhere good enough for the bye run as 3 other Jr's cut .000's, two others had .002's and another had an .005 within the 30+ car field. Ben got lucky in round 1 when he drew a 12.90 car and she red lit by -.005 because Ben also red lit by -.005 Second round we were up against a 7.90 car and Ben went red by -.045. I can't tune that out of the car Extremely frustrating for the both of us! So, we will make some more adjustments before we head to Bristol, TN this Friday - and hope to learn a bunch in the Doug Foley Drag Racing School. In the lanes for Round 2, nerves going crazy - note the Grumpy billboard on the wall at the Grove: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...ly14Round2.jpg |
Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Wow...incredible lights, including Ben's.

Re: The newest drag racer gears up!
Yea - you would think an .008 light would bring it home - but not at this track! Ben has been so good on the tree, with at least one .00X green light on each day of racing - until 6 weeks ago when we made a whole bunch of changes to the car to get it dialed into the 8.90 class. I will be unable to obtain a set of offset spindles for Ben's car by Friday, so plan 'B' is to launch at a lower idle rpm - which mechanically will tighten the throttle cable, so I'll need to add even more slack to compensate. I have to get him back to .00X lights because these kids are really good - there is a reason why MGR has won more Team Championships at the Eastern Conference Finals than any other track!
A trophy every once in a while helps to motivate us: http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...withTrophy.jpg My Amanda has decided that she too would like to race a Jr Dragster - provided it is pink (purple might do in a pinch!) . I hope to have an easier time with her, as both Ben and I have stumbled our way through this mess together - and she will be the recipient of our small amount of knowledge. Danny loves to go along, but at 4.5 just can't hang in for the long haul! http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h6...nySleeping.jpg |

The 2012 trek to the Eastern Conference Finals is in the book! Another great trip - can't think of a better way to spend time with my son Benjamin than 8 days of racing,
We pulled out at 5:30am Friday for the 9 hour pull to TN https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use..._with_joel.jpg We got there on time and got right to work setting up - boys went to work on their cars https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...n_the_pits.jpg https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...it_central.jpg Heading to the lanes - a ritual for the next 8 days Car count was 625 for the big event, but total count for the week was even more as some folks could not stay the whole time. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use..._the_lanes.jpg Trying to keep the sun from baking the driver! https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...m_the_back.jpg Rolling up.... https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...rolling_up.jpg We went out the first round on both Saturday and Sunday with lazy lights, (at least they weren't red!). Rain postponed the TnT scheduled for Monday, which pushed the drag racing school to late in the afternoon. So, we had Randy & Eric from Halfscale Dragsters work on our car for a few hours in their trailer - replaced the entire throttle pedal assy, cable, added a heel stop, cable adjuster, steering coupling, etc... Next was the school - Ben listened intently during the class session, and then put it to work. We had 5 runs inside of 2 hours Monday night, I was exhausted! But the school was good as Ben had 5 green lights in a row with the slowest one being .077. We had trouble repeating this performance later in the week, but at least they weren't 'red'. We learned a lot in the school, too bad it was jumbled up with the Doug Foley Racing Experience and we did not get a lot of track time / feedback. But what we did learn, Ben used in the final event ! School session - 10pm! https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...hool_night.jpg Ben won first round on a pedal-fest. Both cars dialed 8.90, Ben treed the other kid and then played the stripe to perfection running an 8.96 vs. the other kid's 8.97. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...irst_round.jpg Ben won second round at the stripe by pushing the other kid under, this was a difficult round as Ben was up against the Al-Anabi Jr Dragster and was trying to cope with the intimidation factor of running against a such a well sponsored car. They had equal lights, Ben was just .001 better so it was a race to the stripe where Ben ran him down to the stripe and then dunked 'em. Once the other kid got over his temper tantrum of throwing stuff and beating on his car Ben was able to shake hands and go across the scales - then through fuel check. Ben trying to stay calm before round 2! https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...relaxation.jpg Going through the scale and then on our way to Round 3 - our first time! https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...er_round_2.jpg Unfortunately, we went out in the 3rd round with a lazy light to the kid that eventually won it all. But it was a super fun time, and we can't wait to go back next year. Ben with the starting line favorite known as 'Cowboy', the kids love this guy because he truly loves the kids There was a line to have your kid's picture taken with him: https://www.yenko.net/attachments/use...ith_cowboy.jpg So, the 20th Anniversary event is over, more to come!! |
