https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-photo_54.jpg Can anyone tell me much about this fuel pump, I have heard a few members here say the red is not a real good pump? |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
All I know is the set I bought in '69 was blue and it's still working.

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
The red pump is the lower volume and pressure, I believe it is 7 1/2 max psi. Still a great pump for the street and regular cars.
|
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
This is the very earliest design-painted all red..later just the top housing was red and the pump housing was bare aluminum.

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
You may wanna ask someone with a Holley info sheet or Catalog . ..even the Holley/Mickey Thompson catalogs from around '72.. the reason I mention this, is the Red Fuel Regulator .
Red = 5-7 1/5 No Regulator Required ! Blue.. 10 + MUST USE REGULATOR Black. 15 + MUST USE MATCHING REGULATOR I'LL look in my Holley / M/T catalog later tonight. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Tom
I was thinking the same thing..never seen a red pump come with a regulator. I have 3-4 in the box nos no regulator The question is was this pump painted this way from Holley or did someone do it? The very original Holleys were painted this way-Red or blue all over. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Oh good points..I have the original instructions
for the pump or they were in the box and I believe it shows the regulator..I hope someone didn't paint it all red!!! ?? |

Early NOS Red and Blue pumps
1. I have seen early NOS/used red and blue pumps painted all over except the mounting bracket-no bare aluminum pump housing but very rare. The blue pump in 67novaboy catalog is painted all over 2. All early regulators I have ever seen are blue like the one in my pics. Ones today have a chromium finish..have never seen one painted red. 3. ***I learned never to say never. I would not doubt Holley might have put in a regulator in early production and then maybe figured out guys were not using it. That being said I have never seen a red pump/nos with the regulator. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Ok, not sure what I have? Will work for my build
Maybe I have a red painted regulator and pump by other than Holley? I like it red will match my car. Lol |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Wondering if anyone has pics of Gabriel Hi Jacket air shocks from the 70's? Looking for the air inlet valve on the shocks, think I found a pair want to make sure they are correct for the 70's. thanks
|
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Jeff,
In my experience, the inlet valves are all Schroeder or Schroeder like valves similar to those valves on your tires. So, a standard air chuck will work to fill them with air. For my '70 Nova. I used modern Gabriels (very close in appearance)I found in black that were painted correct white. I knew with modern shocks that the innards would be good. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Here are the original Gabriels installed on my '70 Nova in early 70s. Next photos of new Gabriels available today.

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
I have several sets of NOS for my car...will get a pic..
The only thing I can add is always run 2 separate lines. That way if one shock blows out both quarters are not taken out LOL..I'm actually having my springs rearched and had small custom made shackles to lift the car up in the rear--air shocks will hopefully be more for looks. I could never understand what the black band decal is for on the air shocks..can anyone tell me? |

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics..._regulator.jpg I've had this since at least the very early 70s. It came with a fully painted red pump. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Hey starship thanks for the pic, maybe I do have an original red that had been painted by Holley not Joe in his garage with a spray can.
Thanks Sam, Whitetop Ok, the black ring is what I notice on all the vintage Gabriel's, which is on the NOS shocks I had found but the only difference is the air valve inlet is not like the one on Sam's Nova pic, the valve is straight out or 180 deg versus the 90? Sam I to thought of buying a new modern set say in black and painting them white, I purchased a set of repop Hi Jacker foils from a member on the site How did you incorporate the black band? Thanks Whitetop, thanks I'm going to fun 2 lines, have NOS Gabriel airline kits, Also have NOS Jac PAC compressor unit that I may use. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
I heard somebody Hi Jacked that Nova , holding it for Ransom in California to be Day 2'd. AGAIN !
Do West coast cars bought from the East coast ever make it back home ? |

The new Gabriels are REEEAAAL close to what they were in the early 70's. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
I just recreated the black band on my repro Gabriels in order to make them look like the old ones. I may have used black duct tape as that was what the original shocks black band looked like to me. I can see not function for the band other than visual aesthetics!

We put the valves in the very rear of the trunk (so no one could screw with 'em). A lot of guys in our area located them on the bumper behind the license plate on Chevelles / novas / Camaros. |

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
well the old wise tale is true one 7 grand pass today and no more vintage fiberglass flex fan! oh and a big dent in the hood! half price now https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...8-img_5328.jpg
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics...9-img_5327.jpg |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Watched a buddy lean over his 72 vette with the hood open and rev it up that exact fan came apart and hit him right between the eyes killed him instantly.
|
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
love those fans but scary over an idle.
|
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Yeah, as period cool as they are , they're still deadly.
I have a group of local friends with Day 2 Cars..... None of us would ever think about a colored fiberglass flex fan .....other than a wall hanger. Your Buddie was one of Hundreds and hundreds that met the same kind of demise.....sorry to hear. A Stainless steel or aluminum fan in great condition is the only safe Day 2 route. |

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Those look like restored Vega bars, right?
Here are some Chevelle bars I just posted in the classifieds- pic for future reference. http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/w...psqgfhi7w8.jpg |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
X2 -- my brother inlaw did basically the same thing and took out his left eye. Just like the plane of rotation on a turbine/jet engine -- don't park your behind anywhere close. TAZ

Re: Day 2 parts discussion
Yup, restored Vega bars...Hemicolt did the restore.

He launched a blade through his newly painted hood. It was an aluminum aftermarket fan that looked like those fiberglass fans (same center section appearance, but aluminum vs fiberglass blades). I think all those aftermarket fans are dangerous - factory or electric is the way to go. |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
agreed
launched 2 of the aluminum fans (bought from Loper's Speed Shop) through my hood on my 70 Z28 back in the day, they did not last long neither did the fan shroud finally went to the factory (73? Z28) flex fan ... it lasted longer but sent one of them through my freshly repainted hood in the early 80's lots of 7000 plus rpms I guess the fan blades would crack from use right where they mounted |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
I'm using a Stainless blade and laminated SS body on my Day 2 Car in lieu of the original aluminum clutch fan.
Its a For Race Use high RPM Fan from 30+ years ago, a NOS unit of unknown (forgotten) maker. It may be a HAYS....??? With a High Performance, High RPM Belt on an Original Deep Groove W/P pulley and NOS 668 crank pulley........Non of That Reproduction Junk on my Motor at all ! |
Re: Day 2 parts discussion
The one issue I saw with my Brother-in-laws car is that he had the A/C pulley set-up where the water pump is overdriven and the WP pulley is smaller than the crank pulley. I never did the math on the ratio, but at 6000 rpm crank speed, that fan could have been going 7500-8000 rpm when it blew apart.
