Nothing but Black Print! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

I'll speculate this is the same as the other OE filter since I see no indication of stripes, and definitely no print on what could be the back.
Thanks Charley. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Trying to get to the bottom of this oil filter question, I'm trying to compare a Repop filter on Right, and what I hope is a NOS filter on left.
Hate to admit what I paid for the NOS one.. Let me know what you think.

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.

I thought the white, bottom embossed & sometimes found with or w/o w/black script filter was commonly installed during engine (break in) assembly at both Flint & Tonawanda, while the nearly same filter, but now w/blue script like yours on the left above, was available OTC and retail back then. And possibly quickly replaced the break in filter during dealer prep before the new owner picked it up too.
Charley's car may be the only one left that can answer this question..

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.

I might as well remove this one and clean the undercoating off it so we can see what it actually is. I also think I will cut it open and see what the paper looks like after being in oil for 39 years.

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.

I think your right the production filter will be different from the over the counter filter, they still do it today no need for all the silk screen on the production filter.

Charlie, Don't do anything drastic, clean yes remove and cut open I wouldn't, the paper is fine.

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.

Cutting it open is a wise move Charley, since you ran it without an oil change. That will tell you a lot about the condition of the internals.

I only wish I could have the opportunity to document such a rare unmolested original '61-'64 as your car. I've gathered many bits & pieces from several cars, but not had the pleasure of spending unlimited time on one true original. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

Jack, I believe it is a LA built car like mine, so it should have the VIN stamp on the pad next to the assembly date.

Re: really cool 70 Z28..simply the best.

Don just sent me these with this explanation..

Rick, this filter was removed from a 1970 L-78 Camaro that showed 500 miles on the odometer.I personally took it off the engine in 1988.A friend of mine had bought the car which had been converted to a race car.The L-78 had been removed when new and replaced with a L-88.I replaced all the race parts with the stock original parts which had all been saved. The oil filter was removed as we had the engine disassembled cleaned and re-assembled.The oil filter was stuck so tight that the only way I could get it off was with a punch through the body and a hammer. This was prior to the time when replacing an oil filter was not a big deal.If I only knew then.......................

Take note of the embossed wording on the bottom of the filter.Air filters weren't the only ones with this verbiage.
Don

Was a nice 61 degrees outside today so I had the Z out, started it....Squirted a bunch of Marvel Mystery Oil down the carb while at a high idle. Basically oiling everything up. Even the exhaust. Also dropped the oil filter. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/388537-tn_032.JPG

That is the correct assembly line filter. Brian Caudell used to reproduce them, they had the right B/W screening on the side but were not correctly embossed on the bottom. It is good to finally see the real one. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

I would have thought that would have compromised the paint finish after all those years but I guess not.

Under coating will come off with Mineral Spirits or even WD-40, and the paint will not be affected.

Yes I put the filter back on after filling it with Marvel Mystery oil. I had also used a ton of in the carb and the inside of the exhaust shouldn't rust anymore because I have red oil on the ground mixed in with the condensation. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/388829-tn_002.JPG

I found a couple spots on the car were it was touched up with a brush. It appears the paint got chipped when they installed the front and rear glass trim. I'm guessing the factory did the touch up. I had asked Norman and he said he never did and touch up. If he had he would have also done the door ding that made him park the car. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/388830-tn_005.JPG
