Not that my opinion counts, but I dig it like this the best. Still retains it's mostly original look, yet has one of it's first racing looks and decals. And the decals could be easily removable, as well as the slicks, etc....

I'm with you, but I think the lettering is shoe polish. To me, that reeks of low budget racing. I would either do it in shoe polish, or have decals made to replicate shoe polish.
