Great find. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

Just looking at those pics, I feel like I've seen it before somewhere. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

I'll have to rummage through my Super Chevy Show pics from years ago. That paint scheme looks familiar.

Re: She's Home (Ribbon COPO)

OK, I'll go out on a limb and disagree with just about everyone. Personally, I think that car would look a gazillion times better painted garnet red/black top than it would with the pink/purple/ribbon job on it now. Garnet Red is a bad ass color, and looks super on a Chevelle. Note that I'm not knocking the car, Its very cool as-is no doubt, but the current paint job ain't anything I'm getting warm and fuzzy over, or one I'd feel bad about stripping off for a fresh coat of garnet. I got to agree with Joe........
I like the way it is, but, if it's proven to be a copo....
Garnet red would be awesome, especially since there's not many of them out there.

don't change a thing... that car is a rolling history lesson as is. you paint the thing, you'll never drive it and then it turns into another garage queen, like 98% of the restored muscle cars out there. not that any of us here should tell you your business, but drive it and enjoy it, heck, take your daughters out in it!

Re: She's Home (Ribbon COPO)

At this stage, I tend to agree with leaving the paint and car alone, even though I'm personally 99.9% sure its a COPO.

If I happen to find a build sheet bringing my certainty level to 100%, I may change my mind. But then I'd have a lot more to worry about than just paint. Do I try and find an MQ block, or just go with a CE? I admit the chances of finding the numbers match block for this car is 0.01%. Do I get rid of things like the Cragers, ladder bars, modern ignition, etc.?

I don't know... if I recall, there were 323 COPO Chevelles, with 99 that went straight to Yenko, making mine one of only 224 cars.

Has anyone ever had luck looking back at old newspaper ads from dealers back in 1969? I know some lots would make the stock # the same as the car's VIN #. I tried this approach once while my buddy owned this, but it seems like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

And although I've said it before, I'll say it again... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ouguysrock.gif

Enjoy the car. If you find docs along the way, start worrying and spending then. I agree that the odds of finding an original block are slim; but, you never know.

Good luck, hope to see you at a Northern Ohio cruise in one of these days.

Very cool car! It costs nothing to leave it the way it is and it's a personal touch by a previous owner. If you do happend to stumble on some paperwork or any part of the original drivetrain, then it might be the time to think about putting it back to original.

Re: She's Home (Ribbon COPO)

I still have the magazine with the writeup about Grady's COPO Chevelle black and white pictures and all. It was the first writeup on COPO Chevelles that I had seen since 1969. Even the NCOA didn't seem to know anything about these cars in those days. Both of our '69 cars were Baltimore and I didn't find build sheets in either. Fortunately, I have the GM of Canada documentation and the original bill of sale for the first car. Some people have found Baltimore build sheets so it does pay to check things out. It would be great if you did find that magical paper. It is gold in this day and age. Our Son's '69 Chevelle was red with the black vinyl top. A very sharp combination that everyone seems to love. Best of luck.

Re: She's Home (Ribbon COPO)

Wow... that does look like an awesome show, and yes, right in my backyard. The only problem is its the same weekend as the Woodward Dream Cruise, which I was considering going to. I was also half-considering towing Ribbon COPO out for Woodward, but if I have a chance to see a couple of COPOs in Westlake, I may change my plans.

Woj 07-09-2008 06:11 PM

Re: She's Home (Ribbon COPO)

Personally, I'd skip the Dream Cruise and go to the Chevelle show. Woodward is a good time, but it can be a pain if you don't have a good parking spot. If you get into the traffic, it can take hours to move only a couple of miles.

Obviously you have a passion for Chevelles and the Northern Ohio Chevelle guys put on a great show.

Re: She's Home (Ribbon COPO)

Hmmmm, nice find... now if I could only find the build sheet to justify spending this kind of $$$ on a motor after just spending a sum of $$$ for the car itself, with a fresh 396 that I helped build.

My original plan was to enjoy this until winter, then pull the interior apart to try and find the sheet. I'm starting to reconsider.

The funny thing is... back in 1989, when I started college, after I sold my 69 Impala, my dream car was a 69 Chevelle with a blown 427, and this was before I knew anything about COPOs or Yenkos. Now I'm only 25 cubic inches (and $8200) away from that dream. I think I can skip the blower for now.

First things first... I have to sell my 70 LeMans. I still can't believe that exactly one week ago, I had no idea I'd have this Chevelle in my garage. I had plans to clean up my LeMans and have some fun with it over my week off. Now its for sale at my brother's house, and I'm thinking of ripping an interior apart on a Chevelle.

And thanks to all of you, any bit of buyers remorse I had is gone for good.

Bob

Re: She's Home (Ribbon COPO)

My advice: don't worry about the MQ or the CE block...neither is original, so what's it matter...save your money on the stamped block and spend it on a good rotating assembly/valvetrain, or to put it back garnet & black!

Sweet find, though... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: She's Home (Ribbon COPO)

Even if it proves to be "officially" a COPO,I'd still leave it alone. In it's present condition,it takes me straight back to high school in the Seventies. It will still be just as much a COPO with it restored or un-restored.I absoulutely love this car. It's a traffic stopper either way!!!!.My two cents!!!......BILLJ

Re: She's Home (Ribbon COPO)

Keep it as is!...you can always restore the car to original specs, but you can only have it as an original "Day 2" car once...right?...isn't that how it goes https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

CopoFan 07-11-2008 07:45 AM

Re: She's Home (Ribbon COPO)

I agree that this will remain a day 2 car. I personally never had the urge to find the original exhaust manifolds, AIR pump, carb, ignition, etc. to make a car "original".

As for the paint, I do think that if I do find a build sheet, I'll go back to Garnet Red. And maybe an MQ block. But I think that'll be all.

Changing subjects... how many of you plan on attending the ACES event on 8/17? I'm thinking it may be more fun than Woodward, at least this year. Not to mention my daughters and wife will have fun at the pool for the day.

And again, I can't say this enough... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ouguysrock.gif

I have not seen “COPO” on the 427 Chevelle build sheets.
There are COPO numbers and special engine and rear end codes on the buildsheet.

It would have made things a lot easier back in the 1980s when we were trying to prove that there were 427 factory built Chevelles if it said COPO on the build sheet.

We were just finding odd looking numbers like 9562 9566 that we could not find listed in any books at that time.
