Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
If you consider yourself a car nut, and I'm guessing most of you do. Do yourself a favor and come out to see it in person. I've been thru several years of auctions now and consider myself fortunate to be able to drive 30 minutes and be at ground zero. There is so much to do and see. BJ is huge, I was there the day before Robosauraus sold, it was just something over in the corner, hardly gave it a look. Last time I was there was 4 or 5 years ago and thought it was huge then, I bet it's 5 times as big now, maybe not in the number of cars but the sideshows, covered tent space, and attendence. There are thousands of cars to see between, BJ, RM, Silver, Russo Steele, Kruse, and others I don't even pay attention to, oh and of course go to the Pavillions on Saturday, and this year Christenholtz's. Unless you've been there you can't fully comprehend it, most of the big events are 10 minutes apart so you can take in Russo Steele, BJ and the Pavillions in one day, but you better have your roller skates on. There are so many top notch cars you can't possibly evaluate them all, it's impossible. And I am just talking about the miniscule slice of the market I know something about. BJ's is a circus, from junk to the best of the best and a bunch of side shows to boot, Russo and Steele has the best if you are a pure muscle car enthusiest, the pavillions draws a huge number of cars, a lot of the really cool high dollar cars aren't there because their owners are to absorbed in the auctions but I would stack up whats there anyway against pretty much any public "free" car show. I was glad to go back to work last nite so I could rest. I agree that to the purist BJs is not what we would like it to be but who can blame Craig Jackson, he is pulling in money from so many directions it's incredible, he's smarter than a lot of people give him credit. I wouldn't be surprised if the buyers and sellers commissions are less than 25% of the overall take. So start planning your trip and saving your pennies and see it for yourself. It really is the Mecca of Musclecars. BTW, BJ isn't moving to Vegas, they are creating another auction for Vegas which is very appropriate considering the kind of show it is. BJs has purchased land from Scottsdale finally and will be building permanent buildings on site to replace some of the tents.

Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
Did they buy the Westworld site ?
|
Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
It sold for $575K which is the same price the RCR 69 Camaro sold for, there no question which I'd rather have given the choice......

Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
I can't blame Craig Jackson. I blame Charley, it's guys like him drooling over that robo-thing and being a John Schnieder groupie that caused all this?
Although if I was king of BJ world I would bring back the reserve, which would bring back the significant and historic cars and dump the boats, robots and washed up celebrities and their crappy cars. Why does Goldbergs clone HEMI cuda CV get a prime Saturday night spot? Because he is Jackson's buddy? The car is an average quality clone and gets prime Saturday night? Is the quality of the cars so weak a boat gets a prime Saturday night spot along with a Cuda clone and general Lee made up car? Last Mecum auction I went to I was talking to Arnie Beswick as he stood next to one of his historic race cars that was for sale. At BJ you get a robot, Goldberg and a dukes of Hazzard guy. Tells you everything you need to know about the state of BJ IMHO. Tells you everything you need to know about Mecum and his respect for muscle history that he puts the historic drag cars and their drivers front and center. BJ thinks John Schnieder is an important piece of automotive history and Mecum thinks Arnie Beswick is? Enough said. |
Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
Do the auctions have "cars for sale" corrals for people that want to name their price and not send their car across the block? If so which ones?
|
Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
I wish Charley had bought Robosuarus. He could charge admission to watch it chomp on the Isetta he bought at Russo. Those two machines are truly diametrically opposed. As for the auctions, I spent less time at B-J than ever before so It's hard for me to say but I did sell 2 cars at Russo and was treated very well. I would never have gotten that much time on the block at B-J. They really worked for their money.

Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
BJ does have a "car corral" but you may not be able to name your price. A friend wanted to put his highly documented CE block LS6 El Camino in it and was told it was not worth the reserve he set. He was told it was a $40K car, needless to say it didn't go there.
|
Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
Rumour is that they bought either part of Westworld or some adjacent property with plans to put in some permanent buildings. Of course a couple years ago I heard they were pulling up stakes and moving the whole thing out to the Cardinals stadium in Glendale. That was probably a negotiating ploy with the city of Scottsdale.

Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
IF YOU TAKE YOUR CAR THERE AND IT IS A REAL QUALITY CAR,YOUR TAKING A CRAP SHOOT THAT THE HAMMER MIGHT COME DOWN VERY QUICK TO A INSIDER.RUSSO AND STEELE IS PICKING UP STEAM AND IS GOING TO BE A HEADACHE FOR B-J.THE CARS ARE NICE,THE ATMOSPHERE IS GREAT,HE FEEDS YOU,AND THE AUCTION IS FUN,AND MOST OF ALL THE PRICES ARE A LOT BETTER IF YOU ARE A BUYER

Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
My wife watched some of this with me on the speed channel, and she reminded me over and over again how stupid stupid stupid I would have been if I sold my solid axle vettes and my big block vette to go down the tunnel vision mopar path I was on 2 yrs ago. My 2 71 cudas are in the crapper as far a value drop (cool colors and all), the 69 camaro is fine, the vettes are still fine, and thank god the one hemi I got is luckily NOT an eBody. If anything, I learned you never know what is hot from year to year, its always a guess. If you have to have more than one car, make sure you are diversified (like stocks) and you really like what you got (because tomorrow it could fall like a rock). Thats what I get out of the tv circus (razzing from my wife telling me she was right).
I have gotten approval to get a big block nova (69) as long as I sell something 'mopar', while watching this with her. So......hum.... |
Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
Most things in life are cyclic. Muscle cars (corvettes too) are no exception. The MoPars will come back in time. But if you are in a hurry, this is little consolation.

Couple of "opinions" ......... 1.As Charlie said, I thought robosaurus was such a stupid idea. I was wrong. It was 1 of over 1200 lots and it was really cool. My son has not taken his robosaurus shirt off since I returned. (he watched it all weekend with my wife) I'll say it again it was 1 lot and a tremendous attraction that everyone who saw it in person was amazed. 2. I have attended BJ etc. for 7 consecutive years. It is an experience which centers around an auction. I don't like it as much as I used to and would like to see the reserve return and with it the return of real cars. But it is an enjoyable time for a car guy and a chance to be with like minded friends (and maybe have a libation). I have to watch tivo to see the cars because you are so busy with everything else, other auctions included, that I see maybe %10 of the cars and I was only at R&S, which I have always enjoyed, for a few hours. 3. As far as the above quote; personally, I buy what I like and drive them. Yes they have to be original motored correct cars but I still own what I like. I like Fords, but not enough to give up space for one. If I was buying like a stock, I would have gotten long Shelby's years ago. So I have ridden my Hemicuda up and back down as far as value goes, but nothing replaces the s**t eating grin on my face everytime I nail it and feel the second 4 barrel open up. Do I follow the market? Yea you have to. But I really follow my heart and it liked GTOs, camaros and cudas etc 20 years ago and it still does now. Just now you have to be more carefull. $.02 JOHN |

Its a RollerCoaster ride !! Thrills & Frills https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif
A wave that some cars can get caught into and ride the High Price wave and then the wave dies(Monster Garage etc)and people walked away. If your lucky to get in the momentum when cars are selling, they walked away happy. Cars that followed usually took a hit. I think they really worked the cars this year. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif One of the Best car shows, auctions in the world, great entertainment with CARS,BABES,and BOOZE. There is an A*S for every seat and if you dont do your home work, so be it.. I call it The Good,Bad and the Ugly !! If you know this you will have a a great time with over 2,000+ cars ALL over AZ in that one week. Got to love it !! Just my 5cents !! It was nice to see you Rich! You are right...where else can you go for ~ $10 (on the early days of the auction) and get free parking...free tram/bus ride to the door...and end up with more than $10 worth of catalogs/giveaways etc?
Plus...as a bonus...you get to see a bunch of cool cars...and some really crazy people https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |

Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
Chevelle Heart,
We bought the L78 vert for $167K. It is going to Omaha for a new museum. It looks to be a real car with build sheets and other docs. I haven't crawled all over it yet to see what all the part numbers are but it looks good so far. We also bought the fathom green Yenko Camaro that was Ron Wilhelm's and Stefano's red Yenko Chevelle. Frank |
Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
The white L78 Chevelle Conv is the former Jim Bukovic car. Just talked to him today. Orig drivetrain car. I think he sold it for $10k back in the day ...lol.....when we were kids....
|
Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
The white L-78 Convt. once belonged to Mr.B too.
|
Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
Which L78 convert has a photocopy of the buildsheet because a prior owner wouldnt give up the original? It was back about 7/8 years ago when it sold. I thought it was either a black or white car..

Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
I spotted Charlie, Stephano (tell your butt to stop calling me, especially while I'm fending off the homeless) and a few others. Wished I had visted with more of you, spent half a day at the Pavillions and most of my time a Russo Steele.
Saw Charlie at the 'Mecum Preview'- telling his Robosaurus joke to anyone who would listen. Funny thing was, I really didn't know if Charlie was joking or not. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif This was the first year I brought my dad. He walked in and said "Is this the Arizona State Fair, or an auction?" Dad had it right- came away with "BJ is a county fair caught cross-breeding with a casino while a car auction videotapes the act." Dad found a brown '64 Sport Fury at R&S similar to one he "made a few dollars drag-racing with" during his high school days. Overall, time well spent with the old man. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif Keep the Hobby Fun! ~Patrick Krook |

Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
Perspective offered by a friend:
Some interesting stats from the BJ: 2008 - sold 1,167 cars, boats, trucks, dinosaurs etc for a total of $88 mil and had 280,000 attendees . 2007- sold 1,270 for a total of $112 mil with 250,000 attendees. In 2008 sold 8% fewer cars for 27% less money. On a per vehicle sale basis about 15% less year over year (from an average of $88,200 in 2007 to $75,400 in 2008) Fewer big dollar cars in the $1mil+ range, no Ferrari boy? Early onset recession? Average sale price was $75,400 this year - hardly chump change. He is a Exec VP at a big brokerage firm,so I guess he had some time on is hands this week, or it was done by his analysis department. |
Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
All of those stats were in this morning's Scottsdale paper, along with the statement that B-J & Scottsdale are close to reaching a 4-5 year agreement to keep the auction there. Gooding & Co. sold about 70 cars for 21 mil in their first AZ. auction. R&S sold about 61% of 500 cars to cross the block for a total of 19.8 mil.
I'd say the overall auction results were very strong. |
Re: My .02 on Barrett-Jackson
So ferrari hat guy wasent there. If i hired him as a personal buyer for a collection he would have been fired long ago. That guy just wanted his 5 min of fame and did'nt seem to care to much how he spent someone elses money. I noticed that alot of the past big time guys were not there or at least were not seen on camera.
