Re: New project coming along
Is that for the frame or the rear? I am looking for a black to use on my Nova subframe. I want to get it close to what was used originally as far as the sheen goes. I used the stuff from Eastwood already and it seems too shiny. Maybe some of the Yenko crowd has some suggestions as well? Thanks for all the pictures and future info Bill.

Re: New project coming along
Got the chassis finished, so I spent a few evenings re-doing some of the interior pieces like the kick panels, rear side panels, dash and gauges etc.. I won't need them for a while, but they're done, and ready to install when the time comes.
Here's the before and after of the refurbish the console project. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/console2.jpg http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/da.../console_2.jpg |
Re: New project coming along
Quick update for some of you stuck inside with cabin fever. Got the NOS air shocks (thanks Greg) and air lines installed.
Got the wheels painted (what a pain in the a$$) and 5 new G-70-14 redlines. I installed the u-joints on the drive shaft last night. Front end/disc brakes are finished. Many interior parts are re-done and ready to go back after paint. Some of the engine brackets, PS, etc, parts are done. Everything in the rear end is finished. Motor is next. Then on to the body work when I get some real energy going http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/da.../fin_front.jpg http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/fin_rear.jpg http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/da...n_steering.jpg |

Steve, ya just have to go out there every night and get something done, no matter how much you wanna play on the computer. . I was outside in my driveway on New Years eve, spray painting new u joints under the flood lights when it was 25 degrees outside. The neighbors thought it was a little strange when they came home, but their used to this kind of thing. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |

Re: New project coming along
I just found this post by Bill. It warms my heart seeing this car come together after all these years. This car is real and it will be perfect when Bill is done with it. I saw this car 25-30 years ago about 400 miles away from where I live now. The kid at the time had just bought the car from the second owner a few days before he ran out of gas in front of my house. I was the person that pointed out all the special things about the car including the big Holley carb. I told him to be prepared to put allot of gas in the car because of the L-78 motor.

Re: New project coming along
Thanks for sharing that story Mark. We tend to forget these cars are 40 years old and have some history behind them. Who would have thought, 30 years ago, that someone running out of gas in front of your house, would be discussed on this internet thing in 2008
Couple progress pictures. Been taking parts out of storage containers, and blasting, repainting, rebuilding, etc. Some parts needed rebuilding like the steering column, brake/clutch pedals, etc. The seats have simply been sat in way too much. I striped them down and replaced all the springs. They will be recovered sometime before they're needed. I starting to run out of parts to redo. I guess thats a god thing, but it also means I can't put the body work off much longer. I have a quarter panel coming. ( thanks Greg Cullum/Jim Hanke) Still looking for a good right side door/or skin (HINT). Anyway, just thought I'd post these pics before the chassis and all the finished parts are put into a car bag (thanks Albert for the extra car bag) and stored till the body is finished and can be reunited with the chassis. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/parts_2.jpg http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/parts_1.jpg |
Re: New project coming along
WOW! Look at all those parts. I'm doing the reversal of you Bill. I almost have all of the bodywork done on my Nova shell and it's time to start working on the small stuff. Maybe a week or two? So what did you do to that driveshaft?
|
Re: New project coming along
Jed, I didn't do anything special to the drive shaft. I removed the old u joints, blasted the drive shaft and the yoke, then primed and painted the drive shaft with a stainless steel paint. The yoke was painted with cast iron paint. Then I installed new u joints, somehow, without scratching anything https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif I was thinking of having the drive shaft polished and leave it natural steel, but it's gonna be sitting for a while, so I didn't want to take the chance of rust devolping. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

Re: New project coming along
That is one thing that I haven't decided on yet. Wether or not to paint the shaft or have someone else clean it up like polishing. I'd have to have one made or find a good used one. The one that was in my car looks like an old piece of exhaust pipe. Yea, it's that rotted and pitted. The only things that are good are the ends. I saw in another post that there was a driveshaft resto place, but I know they wouldn't want that thing. I hear you on the rust issue. I have to take of pic of this thing so you know what I have to deal with.

I started with 80 grit on a DA and worked my way down until it shined. Then I clear coated it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../undercar2.jpg |

Re: New project coming along
Yet another update for you guys who are sick of watching football.
The engine was off to the machine shop this week. It needed to go 30 over. He also align honed it. It's getting a new steel crank, dimple rods, forged domed pistons. New valves, springs, retainers, etc. All the machine work is done, and should be all assembled by the end of the week. Here's a shot before honing. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/boring.jpg Here's a shot of the pistons. I understand they go into the holes of that thing in the picture above.http://bestsmileys.com/wink/1.gif http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/pistons.jpg |

Re: New project coming along
OK.. It's been 5 weeks since the last project update. I thought I'd take a picture before the chassis is put away, for now. The motor and trans are both assembled and back on the chassis.
Fuel pump, alt, water pump, pulleys, exhaust, etc are installed. Still need the smog and carb, but I'm in no hurry. Just a matter of buying them and a couple hrs to install. I have an nos quarter and door skin to begin the body work. Here's a shot of the chassis as of today. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/da...ium/motor3.jpg |

Re: New project coming along
Quick update:
I got the carb back from resto today. Bolted it down, as well as some other odds and ends. Quick question: The assembly manual isn't real clear on how the pcv hose should be routed. Does this look correct? Does that bracket on the front/right carb stud, holding the hose look right? Just the smog now, which is coming back from resto soon, and the chassis is ready. Started the body work a couple weeks ago. New quarter/rocker, all the seam sealer is removed and the bed/under body/firewall will be blasted. Doors and tailgate stripped & ready for primer. It's all moving along better that I'd anticipated. http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/500/carb8.jpg |

Re: New project coming along
ElCamino Update: With the chassis finished, it was time to start the body work. The car is remarkably rust free. Only a couple small patches on the roof, where the vinyl top was originally. The biggest repair is the left side, where it was hit in a slow speed crash (thanks Mark Sheppard for that info). The rocker and lower quarter was pushed in. Got an nos quarter (thanks Greg Cullium/Jim Henke) and a new rocker. It took several evenings, some cut up knuckles, a few takeout dinners, and a bunch of 4 letter words, but the rocker and quarter are out. I also rustproofed all the "innards". Then a buddy of mine helped me out welding the rocker. The quarter is fitted and ready for welding tomorrow. Also got a new used door, which is in perfect condition. I stripped the door and fitted all the parts and everything looks good. The it's off to the blaster. i will have the interior, firewall, bed, and the whole bottom of the body blasted. Thats where I am today. I'm gonna keep posting this stuff, till someone tells me to stop.
