[b]Art Malone drove the "Mad Dog IV" shown here at Bristol Speedway, to a new closed-course
world record of 181.561 mph at the Daytona Speedway in 1961. Bill France had posted a $10,000 reward to the first person to crack 180 mph after a death caused USAC to remove Daytona from their schedule. Builder Bob Osiecki took an Indy car and a supercharged fuel injected 413 Chrysler bored to 450 cu in producing 800 hp on alcohol to do it. Six other drivers including NASCAR great's Curtis Turner and Buck Baker tried their hands before Malone got behind the wheel. Several blown engines and many shredded tires later Malone ran an estimated 226 mph on the straights and 170 mph in the turns to circle the track in 49.59 seconds. It cost Osiecki $35,000 to win the $10,000 of which Malone got $2500! - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...hevy/ss178.jpg - |

Re: NASCAR - before the Modern Era
Thanks so much for posting the NASCAR pictures. A lot of those are from the 50's, I was there in the 60's and saw it first hand. Thanks again, they bring back many memories.

Re: NASCAR - before the Modern Era
[b]This sequence of events was taken at the 1969 Sportsman Permatex 300 at Daytona.
They were not taken by me, but are shots of Don Mac Tavishs crash on lap 9. This was his debut at Daytona, driving the #5 '66 Merc Comet. He tangled with a car driven by Bob James and then hit the outside crash wall at a point where a metal guard rail covered an opening in the wall. The impact with the butt end of the concrete sheared off the whole front of the car, up to the firewall; its engine was thrown over 100 feet from the wreck. The Mercury then spun around and wound up facing oncoming cars in the middle of the track surface, with MacTavish completely exposed in the drivers seat. It was then struck by Sam Sommers. At the speed the cars were traveling, it was impossible for Sommers to avoid contact. This second impact severed MacTavish's legs completely off and sent his car bouncing into the grass on the inside of the track. MacTavish was pronounced dead at the spot of the accident. The Youtube link after the shots is a graphic film of the end of this crash. - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/300.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/301.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/302.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/303.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/304.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/305.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/306.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/307.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/308.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...Scene/a970.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/309.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/310.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/311.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...C/311-Copy.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...-Copy-Copy.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/312.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...35/HSC/313.jpg - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtWUfFiXIkM |
