Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
The bottom line is that the car is not going to sell cheap ( quite the opposite ) if we were discussing it or not. Furthermore, there will need to be a very expensive restoration done. Anybody that thinks they could possibly catch the seller sleeping is just fooling themselves. They ( seller ) know what they have and they know the approximate value also. And they probably know what restorations cost now a days also.
How many of us do not know the approximate value of our cars and the approximate cost of restoration ? |
Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
It's an interesting car that's for sure. One thing that troubles me is the whole thing about having the window sticker and original bill of sale in "storage". If I was selling the car I think I would take those out of storage and include them with the ad. As a buyer, those would be some of the first things I would need to see before I even committed a dime to this.
Throw in what is going on with the bidding and it makes one want to burst a blood vessel https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif |
Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
It is very obvious what kind of people these two partners are based on the way they conduct their business. It is a very cool and rare car. If anyone else has a documented L89 4 speed, Std or RS, project or builder, with good owner history/pedigree, for sale then please contact me at; [email protected] Regards, Stefano |

LOL...Don...stop yelling. We all come to these sites to get educated. They earned their reward when they found the car. So they come and find out what market value is,nothing wrong with that. If they are bidding on it themselves there is a problem but I can't find fault with surfing the net to figure out what it is worth. |
Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
I agree, what's wrong with someone wanting to know what their car is worth? Don, are you mad that it took you so long to gain all this info or mad because others can now get it fast and free?

Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
After reading this Thread I have a couple of comments.
1. Shill bidding is never a good thing but if you think it only happens on eBay then everyone is fooling themselves. I have seen it first hand at numerous major auctions. Is making all the cars no reserve and then letting the owner buy the car back okay? It certainly is a great way to get exposure for your car and raise the value! With the way prices get pushed up every year after Barrett Jackson and the credibility that BJ brings to the car it is a great investment to do just that. 2. Everyone wants a bargain but the person who finds that deal is entitled to whatever the market will pay. It is easy for someone to complain about prices but I guarantee that if they bought it cheap they would also ask for the moon. So lets not pick on anyone for making a buck. 3. These cars have become an investment vehicle for many people. Most of whom have lost heavy in the Stock Market. At least with a car you can enjoy driving, showing, restoring and still make money to boot! That will keep prices rising. Supply in demand just like everything else (gasoline is a great example of that)! I am just thankful that my passion and hobby has an upside. Just my opinion for whatever its worth. Thanks |
Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
Jason, Ive had the knowledge since i was 16 yrs old. If you talk to anyone who knows me personally they will tell you that i will help anyone who need a value or a tech question answered because i truely love these old cars
Nobody loves GTO'S more than I, Hell I had them when you were made fun of for having a Judge. But anyway I just think Its one thing to help someone out and let them enjoy their car like you do but when its done underhanded to gain wealth then I have a problem with that. I promise I wont bitch no more so nobody thinks its about me. I was really just trying to help but I will keep shut from now on. Someday you will see my point. |

Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
Maybe the better way would be for him to put a higher reserve on it.
As far as i am concerned ebay is really just a cheap, national for sale ad. $50 to list, $50 when your reserve is met. The reserve is kinda like the old days, when you put an asking price on the car, someone can buy it, or not. (which is why I don't understand a "secret" reserve price) Maybe he wants to get $70K for it and he is trying to make it look worth that. One of the members here thought it was worth pretty close. I'll bet almost everyone here has bid on a friends car at one time or another. Really no harm IMO, because either the car is worth that or it is not. If the car is not worth $70K, then it will not sell. Maybe he should have just put an ad in Hemmings, with a $100K asking price? Maybe that is what he will do next. Some guys don't really want to sell their cars at any price. This is a real good way for him to see EXACTLY what it is worth and not sell. (only will cost $100) Appraisals cost more then that, this is actually a better barometer of the true value. It is not ethical to shill bid, but like was said before, it is a REAL BIG part of this hobby. just my opinion, I could be wrong |

Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
I would like to elaborate a little on what GTO DON has said. I think all of us would be more then willing to help another enthusiast with regard to values, condition, correctness, etc if the person asking is really looking at it for their own personal enjoyment. However, such assistance would likely not be forthcoming if the sole purpose was to "flip" the car.
I get asked a lot about opinions on 69 Chevelles and 300 Deluxe models in particular. One recent example was a guy bought a 300 Deluxe SS and got all kinds of information from me after the fact. Two weeks later it's sold for a lot more than what he paid. Then, he starts emailing me with a link to every 69 Chevelle that comes up on Ebay thinking they are under valued. Sorry, no more help https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif Just my two pennies worth. |

Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
there are a few like this in the Oldsmobile circle,as of late.
mostly Mopar giuys and Vette guys who have no clue about any Olds, they catch a deal on a 442,and become information vampires,so they can sound knowledgable when trying to pump the car. most of the ones trying this now, are losing their shirts, because they bought cars that are either clones or rough projects. |
Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
Like Rick, I too have emailed the seller to ask a few questions as I mentioned in my earlier post. Here is one of the responses I got:
"EVERYTHING I HAVE STATED IS FROM THE OWNER AND HE IS A VERY HONEST MAN. THE CAR IS WHAT I SAY IT IS BECAUSE I ALSO AM VERY HONEST.I WOULD NOT WANT A BUNCH OF PHONE CALLS FROM PEOPLE TO HELP THE NEXT GUY SELL THE CAR WHEN I OWNED IT SINCE I WAS 17 AND WAS FORCED TO SELL FOR HEALTH REASONS." Although he claims to be an honest man he makes no mention of the fact that he "MAYBE" won this in a poker game from his schill bidding partner as he alluded to in his email to Rick. In fact he makes no mention of it at all and implies he bought it from the original owner. I am all for people making a buck along the way as long as they are honest and fair about it. Hell that's the American way! However IMHO this seller is not being fair and certainly it does not appear that he is being honest despite his claim he is. Too bad the original owner, if there is one, doesn't know about it. Check some of the dates out on the cancelled title and, to me, they seem to be all over the place however I don't know much about Ohio titles. The car may be the real deal however I have asked the seller three days ago if he or the original owner would back up his claims about the car in a written, signed and notarized statement. I have not heard from him since that request. Throw in the questionable bidding practice taking place as well, the implied comment that the window sticker and original BOS is in storage and that the car is worth every bit of $100K as it is now and when you look at the entire picture you can see the https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif that is taking place. He will not provide and info on the POP which we all know can be duplicated. In my humble opinion the car( even if it is indeed a real L89), as it is now, is no where near being worth $100K especially with a NOM drive train let alone the price which is currently on Ebay. I have been researching L89's for quite a while as well as owning one myself. I know a few things about them. Based on what I have seen unfold over the last few days, I would be very hesitant about this particular deal and the person(s) you are dealing with. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif |
Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
I hope whoever does a deal on this car makes the sale contingent on getting the window sticker and bill of sale that are in storage somewhere. Maybe pay a very reduced amount and the balance when the orig paperwork appears. If you pay the full amount for the car up front there is absolutely no incentive for the seller to try and locate this paperwork.
|
Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
Excellent advice Charley.
If anyone on this board makes a play for the car remember, to be forewarned is to be forearmed, as far as this deal goes. <font color="red"> Approach with Caution |
Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
And remember, in many cases the paperwork is worth more than the car. That's why it's important to verify and secure the paperwork with the deal.

I doubt it Jeff. More than likely he ended the auction early because he got wind of the ebay investigation. I say it'll be back (unless he and his "Partner" are kicked off ebay), and the next time, there won't be any bids from "Pontiachomeslice".

Re: EBAY 9000 mile L-89 Camaro
Caveat Emptor!!
In any auction situation there may be dubious bidding. In fact many of the major auction houses have it written into their sellers contracts. A person whom is intent on making a purchase must do their research and know the value of something before becoming emotional about bidding. If you know what you are buying and set a limit it will be difficult to be scammed into overpaying.https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif This site is an amazing tool for researching and learning from some of the incredibly knowledgeable car buffs on here! In regards to this particular auction. This one don't smell right, do it? If I was going to spend over $50,000 on a vehicle I would spend the $400 bucks to fly there and see it in person. |
