What did you use to clean the firewall so that you did not ruin the markings or finish underneath? Real neat photo's!
|
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
enamel reducer...
It works like a champ... won't harm the laquer paint on the car or frame. Just go slow with paper towels or rags. I got the paint off of everything the same way... I tried a few inconspicuous places at first then went for broke. |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
The paint is not all that bad... it has laquer checks and a few thin spots but overall it look pretty good.

What a gorgeous car. Wheels/tires were an excellent choice. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif x100!!

Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Thanks... I will have to admit that I never really was a fan of 69's but a black RS/Z with the cowl hood, endura bumper, and spoilers really looks good... I would take it any day of the week.

Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
The original block could be in a local town... we are currently looking for it and are generating leads.
We have fouund out through someone who knows the car that the crank pistons rods were all put into the 0010 that is currently in the car. The clutch exploded at some point and ripped a hole, punched another hole in the floorboard not to mention the dents in the trans tunnel... could have torn up the back of the block??? I am sure that not too long after is when the scattershield was installed. |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
The engine compartment almost back to original...

Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Some more cleaning... the floor pans and gas tank were covered with carbon/soot from open headers and a rich mixture. Used easy off oven cleaner...

Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
what did you use on the engine compartment?
Looks GREAT! |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Cleaned everything with enamel reducer. Then coated with spray cosmoline from Rick's. Did the same with all the suspension as well.
The only thing left to clean is the floor board section from the firewall to the Rear axle. (the first layer of sirt is gone but needs to be brushed with some degreaser) Here is another pic of the engine compartment, put the 2605 that was on the pass inner fender and the BLACK on the firewall. Still want to find a few more good original parts vs. the repro stuff. http://www.crossroadspaper.com/052.jpg |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
looks good...toss the washer bottle and find a old yellow piece.
|
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Exactly... Rick's sent 2 by accident and I have poured all kinds of chemicals in the second one trying to get it to yellow up some. (If anyone has an old bottle, I will gladly trade a brand new GM one for it)
I also found some used tower clamps and I am going to remove the new intake bolts for the originals that I cleaned. Found an older 515 voltage reg to install. Few more things but overall it is coming together pretty well. Parts needed Link |

I predict they will be soon be coming up on eBay with hefty price tags! Rats, I need one too. I guess I'll have to use the new, too-white repro since the correctly-aged pieces might be out of my price range. Maybe someone can start a business that makes new repros look four decades old? Maybe fill it with ice-tea and set it out in the sun for a few weeks, then bake it in the oven on low heat so it doesn't melt? Just brainstorming here... (Yeah, small brains shouldn't try to brainstorm.) |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Already tried tea... EXTRA strong and scalding hot... no dice! Coffee... No dice.

Let me know when you discover the secret formula and I'll have you "age" one for me. |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
you want the secret....fill up a old metal folgers can with water can let it get good and rusty...pour into bottle let sit, shake every day...you now will have one nasty mess...but you wont have aged the outside.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif
|
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
What if you submerge the whole thing in rusty water?
|
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
try it...we can sell the secret to the corvette dorks... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif
|
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Fill it up with Coke. Let it sit for a couple of days. The phosphoric acid in Coke can dissovle human teeth.
Warning: it might turn it more brown than yellow. |
Re: What is this 69 Original Paint Z28 Worth
Thanks for the washer bottle discussion...Got me thinking again..Were the factory bottles ever that white? I replaced my old one due to the yellow tint and used a GM white bottle...I'm starting to like the yellow tint more and more..I know the yellow tinted one was correct but was it aged or did it just "come that way"...???

The washer solvent reservoirs were white. Here's one that is untouched and just starting to yellow at the center molding seam.
