I've got a set of 15" NOS Cragar "GT" wheels like Joe has pictured.... They weren't offered in too many sizes though... Just waiting for the right car to put them on....

Here's what an original set of Torque Thrusts look like. I think these are '67 - '69 vintage. I remember these wheels riding in the trunk of my '57 when we moved into the current house in 1972. A few curb blemishes but they've never been repainted. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Add a 327 dual-four Corvette engine, 4-speed, 4:11s, white fenderwell headers, diamond tuck, traction masters, US Royal Masters (taller in back), glasspacks, chrome exhaust tips out the back. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/drool.gif |
Re: Vintage Wheels
Yes, a lesson learned for some. The originals had that goldish-brown color on the spokes - not what is usually seen today on "retro" Day-2 cars. Most of them have smoke gray or charcoal gray spokes. Not period correct.......

Not period correct....... [/ QUOTE ] Not entirely true. While some Americans did indeed have the "goldish" cast finish, some definitely did not, and were natural silver in the spoke area. I have seen "NOS in the box" ones both ways. I think it may have to do with the specific year of manufacture. Also, some Torq Thrust copies from the same period, in which there there many, had darker charcoal colored spokes. I believe many A/P torq thrust wheels were factory finished this way. |
Re: Vintage Wheels
That is great information on the spoke colors. I have a set (American TT D)with natural color (bare) spokes and did not know if they should be painted or left alone. I guess I leave them alone.

Re: Vintage Wheels
I agree Joey. Weren't the original 'Mag' wheels more of a gold color? As I recall, none of the American TTs were painted. They had a natural finish on the spokes, but some (maybe depending on the year of production) had the gold tint while others were gray. A guy here in town had a full set of 14 x 6s on his new '68 Fairlane and they were the gray finish. Mine (14 x 7s)are definitely in the '67 to '69 range but I honestly can't remember when I bought them.
I also had a set of Keystone copies. They had aluminum faces but were welded to steel rims. Those spokes were darker, and definitely painted. I ran those on a White '65 Impala. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |

Re: Vintage Wheels
Interesting TJ....the M/T ad mentions "all welded"...Vernes are riveted...they are earlier M/T wheels...I have a NOS set of them too...
[ QUOTE ] The Mickey Thompson Challenger wheel was introduced in '65, as cast inside the back on one of the spokes. This one is 14x6. A variety of bullets, centercaps and spinners were offered. Unlike the new Radir repops, these wheels have a chrome rim and a cast aluminum center section that is rivited to the rim. Sealant around the rivit heads or a tube is required due to leakage. Verne http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...els/verne1.jpg [/ QUOTE ] |
Re: Vintage Wheels
Another from Verne
[ QUOTE ] This ad is from a '65 1/2 Honest Charlie's catalog. The backs of the wheels are cast "Wheel Centre Co." There is nothing that says "E-T". At first, "E-T" was just the style name of the wheels, and then later (I guess) became the name of the company. Re: Vintage Wheels
What a classic look. Five-spokes with whitewalls on a '62 Impala SS. Blue brake drum too! Let me guess: exhaust cutouts behind the front wheels, nose-high stance, chrome-reverse wheels in front--am I getting close???

Re: Vintage Wheels
TJ,
The nose-up stance is because the engine is out being rebuilt. The chrome reverses on the front are just temporary rollers. The car had all 4 15x7 E-Ts. That's the way the original owner had it set up back in the '70s, blue drums and all. And you're right......he did have a set of cut-outs welded into the original front pipes. He later removed them and welded plates over the holes! The original head pipes/mufflers are still on the car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif Verne |

Re: Vintage Wheels
I keep waiting for someone to post something on a regional sole mag called "Marbec" that was made in the Dallas area back in the mid 60's. I am not positive about my spelling of this wheel but feel the name is very close.
Every time I was down there to visit my Mother who remaried and moved to FtWorth in '62. I went to the local drive-in's and saw them on many local cars often. Good looking wheels but the only thing wrong with them was you had to change the tires by hand back then. The centers were all one piece and not open and there was no "removable center cap". This should ID them easy if anyone has come across a deep dish cromed spoked wheel ET styled. They were a deep dish 5 spoke mag. Never saw any without the deep dish. Anybody remember them? Pantera |
Re: Vintage Wheels
I am going to jump in here and add to the fun. I just sold a 1964/65 Cragar booklet which was perfect for this thread. Most of my stuff is post 1967 but nontheless, enjoy!

Re: Vintage Wheels
TJ,
I have never seen any of the 3 ads you posted from the May '65 Hot Rod. I "must" have that magazine in my files. Going to search for it soon. Yes, the Rader does look just like the M/Ts I have. Little is known. I suspect Mickey Thompson made an agreement with Rader for some rights to produce his own. The mold(s) was modified to include the "M/T 1965" inside the rear of one spoke and they suddenly became M/T mags. At least he did produce a plethora of his own center caps and spinners. In my opinion, his are much more pleasing than the Rader centers. I have quite a collection of the variety he offered, but the ones on the black '62 I call "curvies". I think they must have been mostly a Calif. thing (that more custom look) Honestly, I searched for 10 years to find those spinners, handing out "wanted" photos at every swap meet I went to. As it turned out, a very good friend of mine found a complete set at the Maple Grove Dragway swap meet for $20. a number of years ago and gave them to me. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif Priceless! (I mean the friendship) TJ, my hat's off to you. You are carrying the banner on this thread. Great stuff!
I'd better get a camera and learn how to post my own. I've got a ton of old catalogs. Anybody have a pic of the Cragar Sport mag? (not the Super Sport). Aluminum center spokes and a chrome rim. Those are the mags I put on the '62 with the slicks in '69. (still have them, and they're like new). Verne https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif |

All I'm doing is scanning and posting old wheel ads but it has been fun as well as informative. My son (6 and a car nut) has been sitting on the living room floor going through Hot Rods with me. Beats the H*LL out of watching TV after dinner! Another fun part of old Hot Rods are all the killer cars as well as famous rods, customs, and drag cars for sale in the Hot Rod Mart at the back of the magazines. It's enough to make you weep. |
