I think the car has an interesting look/appeal...but as presented, it just comes up short of earning the Camaro badge, IMO.

Hey Jeff, ever wonder why they are still selling Mustangs and the Camaro and Firebird are on vacation?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, because of the dam union GM had. That's what's killing GM to begin with. People should be happy to have a job in today's world. There's no union at my company and guess what, we had our best year last year. But getting back to the cars, I haven't hear a single person in my office say the word Mustang in several weeks so that indicates that the novelty of the retro Stang is already wearing off. People drive Mustangs because it's a Ford 2 seat rear wheel drive car called Mustang. They always have and always will. And most of them don't even care for performance and get a 6 cyl. It was the first affordable pony car and the first car most people remember seeing when they were young. The Camaro has always been an underdog in terms of trying to match the Mustang sales and I don't think it ever will. As for this new Camaro, I hope they go down on the wheel size, round off the fender/quarter edges, alter the front nose/grill some. But even if they don't, it looks like a fun car to drive.

Re: Camaro reveal news

I bet if the Challenger and Camaro go into production the Camaro gets left at the starting line. Heck let's start our own poll ...

Re: Camaro reveal news

If they went into production at the same time the Camaro would outsell it because the Challenger just doesn't have that big of a following. Same as the Mustang would outsell the Camaro even if the Mustang looked like a Yugo! People cling to the brand loyalty much stronger than you think. Heck, I've only ever owned Chevrolet cars(and 1 truck) and Toyota trucks(older stuff).

Re: Camaro reveal news

Darren I hear ya, and agree that the Challenger initially has a "cooler" look IMO than the new camaro, basically because its a more familiar shape, and mimicks the 70-71 Challenger almost piece per piece, in everything from the interior to the body panels. That makes for a cool looking car, BUT what happens in 3 years when everyone who thinks a "new" 70 Challenger is cool already has one? How do they bring out the "next generation" car? Mustang is going to have the same problem... once you take a design backwards, its hard to move forwards again from there. The PT Cruiser was hot as fire when it first came out too, as was the new beetle... but aside from changing wheel designs and some mild facia updates, its difficult to totally "redesign" a car that is almost 100% retro in appearance. With the Camaro, while it has some retro touches, its still essentially a "modern" car, and can therefore be changed, updated, and evolve into a 6th or 7th generation. I also think this is why the Corvette avoided going too retro... once you go backwards with design, its hard to go forward again. Lets just say I'm just very glad to know they didn't just let the Camaro die, and I think it's gonna grow on alot of people who are hating on it right now... myself included.

Re: Camaro reveal news

They debuted the red (non-operational) Camaro concept at the LA auto show yesterday. Caught everybody by surprise including the GM people at the show. The guy who had to talk about it was called in early so he could cram for the show. He was pretty nervous that he was going to flub up the details. In person I thought the car was pretty cool and the designer was there so I told him so. Yes, I could stand for a little different grille treatment but if this is what they come out with, I would definitely buy it. To me, it earns its Camaro stripes.

-Jon

P.S. Looks like we might actually be able to see more than the front 1/4 of the engine when we pop the hood on this one. That 4th-gen situation did not do it for me. Might as well weld the hood closed.

I'm wondering what the Z28 version will look like? or is this the Z28? I think it's a Great start and I think a few have it correct GM doesn't want to go backwards in design and have a flash in the pan, in the long run will pay off when the other car companies are saying now what.
Besides I'll bet this car will have twice the motor and drive trains of the others, you can have the Hemi don't they put them in their mini vans?
I agree the front end needs some fine tuning, but give me a badged Z28 equipped like Z06 then see who buys the others!!

Re: Camaro reveal news

The Hemi that will make it into the top of the line Challenger will not be found in a mini-van. Take that to the bank. If you thinks the design team from chrysler won't be able to build on this Challenger platform 4 years from now, your kidding yourself also. So far they have hit a "Grand Slam". Instead of dragging the Hemi and Challenger through the mud, I would focus more time on what GM introduced on Sunday and how they can improve! I think they are way behind the eightball right now! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

There are rumors that the new 392 Hemi crate engine, designed for racing, will go along with the new Dodge Challenger body. The 392 is apparently a racing-only engine in current form, not a production design, but a lower-power version may well be made for production and appear in the Challenger. The Challenger concept car to be shown at NAIAS (Detroit, January 2006; the Camaro will also be shown) uses, not surprisingly, the SRT-8 6.1 liter engine — but, unlike any current production LX car, it also has a six-speed manual gearbox. (Automobile suggested that the 510 horsepower 6.4 liter 392 Hemi might be used.) There are issues with the 392 - most notably the question of what untrained drivers will do with that much power. A fairly large number of Vipers left this world unexpectedly

Even though I'm a Chevy guy, I would go for the Challenger.
GM missed the boat again. I can just see it coming, creating the Camaro off another platform like the Monte and slapping Camaro badges on it. Just like the GTO, created from the Grand Prix. What a lazy bunch of creators https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif. I think they need help from Chip Foose and Troy Trepanier. Troy in my books is one of the best builders out there. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

The new Camaro looks like a chunky chocolate car that Dare could use in a commercial for cookies. I think the guys that designed the Camaro were the same so called designers who created the new Caddy XLR. You guys at GM are too freakin funny. Now get back to the drawing boards and design something smaller.

from The Wall Street Journal

January 10, 2006

General Motors announced plans to slash prices on most of its models as part of an effort to more accurately reflect what consumers are willing to pay and move away from the heavy incentives that take a bite out of the auto maker's profits."

Re: Camaro reveal news

Actually when you see them in person, the new Challenger is pretty large. I believe it's on the same chassis as the Magnum, the 300C and the Charger. The Camaro is at least Camaro size...

Chevrolet has showed some ballz and at least attempted to design a 21st century car with some design cues from the 69 Camaro, while DCX just pulled out some old e-body photos and drew a copy-cat skin for a b-body size car. Admirable project for a guy in his garage, but not very impressive for a trained professional engineering staff.

No way would I buy the Challenger before the Camaro.

I'm sorry you feel that Hemi-Challengers are such pieces of crap. I guess you must be talking about all E-bodies then. That's O.K. I guess. I just didn't think I would find this on the Yenko site. I'll keep that in mind the next time I sit in it.

I don't see what any of this has to do with the Challenger Concept or Camaro concept car!

I think after reading this, I'll take a pass on submitting a write-up and feature on the Challenger.

Once again the General can't come up with an original idea on its own. This is nothing more than a STRETCHED version of the Mustang.
At least the designers at DODGE have got their stuff in one sock revealing possibly the BEST new retro concept vehicle EVER!!!
Staying TRUE to the original design and giving the BUYERS what they REALLY want not some half baked concept that is merely a mustang in Camaro Badging...For Shame General...For Shame.
This NEW Camaro is Almost as bad as the Concept 70 Chevelle
which was merely a Grand Am with a graphted front and back, also no imagination!
Take a close look at this NEW Camaro and super impose the 2005 or 6 Mustang over it and you will see exactly what i mean.
NO IMAGINATION, AND NO CONCEPTION OF WHAT WE REALLY WANT IN A NEW CAMARO.

They better get back to work because they are gonna need to really bear down if they are gonna catch Ford and now DODGE in the Retro Muscle Car Race!!!
