Can't pass up an opportunity for old time sake to mention that when Tommy Bolin was just a youngster in the business back in Sioux City, IA he was in a band at the time (Patch of Blue) that was using the same booking agency as the group I was with. Didn't really know him but would see him often in passing. Just knew he was a very good guitarist for his age. Didn't know how big he would (or could have) become. He could have gone on to be a really big name if he hadn't lived life so carelessly.

Check out the 2005 Music Festival recently held as a tribute to him. This was held in Sioux City, IA. Check out some of the attendees. Also see they're grooming another guitarist in the family!

Re: Calling All Music Fans...

I know you guys won't believe this being as most of this music came along before I did, but you guys are practically listing my collection! For no older than I am, I play a pretty mean game of name that tune... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

I think what intrigues me most is how one artist or band ties into another and takes you somewhere else in the musical scheme of things...like Clapton...he did Cream, and then Blind Faith with Winwood, which takes you to Traffic or Winwood's solo stuff...then Derik & the Dominos he did with Duane Allman, which takes you somewhere else...then he was with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, in which John Mcvie played bass, and of course was in Fleetwood Mac...and he was in the Yardbirds with Beck and Page, who open up entire musical chapters of their own...and Clapton even did the solo on my favorite Beatles' tune "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", and those chaps knew their music...that's the kind of stuff I eat up. I mean, look at who/what all Clapton has influenced! Musical genius...

And if you're talking instrumental (for the most part) guitarists...you've got Carlos Santana, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Gary Hoey, Eric Johnson, Steve Moore..... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Superb taste in music.

I've been playing guitar 25+ years, and I cut my teeth on SRV. I had the priveledge of seeing him twice live before his untimely passing...words can not describe the talent that man had. It wasn't just music eminating from his guitar & amp, it was his very soul pouring out.

I still get chills whenever I hear "Riviera Paradise", "Life By The Drop", "Voodoo Child", and most of all, "Little Wing." On Little Wing, if you have your stereo cranked up to about 14 ( https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif ), you can hear the faint buzzing of his tube amp in the background.

Gone, but never, ever forgotten.

If you like guitarists and have not heard Rory Gallagher find a copy of his "Irish Tour 74" live album. Walk on Hot coals is pretty cool. I heard he died a few years ago.

I have 6 Strats, and a Les Paul... nothing really old or collectible, but all US models. I've always been a Fender guy, but the Les Paul is a pretty amazing piece. Its a Cherryburst Classic and has tone like a LP should. I got it for a graduation gift, and have played it maybe a half dozen times. My dad bought me a brand new black '83 Strat when I was 8 years old that I still have today. I used to be pretty serious about learning to play when I was younger, but now I just jam around once in awhile for kicks. I bought Don Yenko's '69 Twin Reverb amp at SCR1, which will still rattle the windows and annoy the neighbors at will. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/headbang.gif

For pure sound I use my Blond 70's Gibson Les Paul Deluxe the sound is incredible and for leads and fun I use a 60's Fender Strat. The Strats are so much lighter than the Les Pauls and are a ton of fun. I also have a couple old Fender Twin Reverbs, Some Marshall Stacks, and lots of Crates. I also have about 50 old effects boxes, remember the good ol MXR distortions? I still use them and I hear there worth a few bucks now. The new programable boxes are pretty cool as you can create any sound you want...

I used to have a black / gold Les Paul, 1965 vintage. Traded it straight across for a 1948 Dodge pickup. If anybody has an old beater LP from the 60's I'm interested, I think I will start plinkin around again in my old age..

Bob, here's the best TYA album http://www.alvinlee.com/discography/Ssssh.jpg
Best song was "Goin' Home" played live at Woodstock..

How about Johhny Winter? "Good morning little school girl"

Hey Mosport, since you started this thread with a request for "bootleg" recordings, after much research I found this bootleg video of Charlie, stolen from his local Stop and Rob. The audio was awful, so it was redubbed.

George Thorogood also played locally at a place called Joe Pops. Actually many famous musicians played at Pops, anyone here ever go to the place in Ship Bottom on LBI?

[/ QUOTE ] Heck yeah Sam, I vacation with friends for a week in LBI every year. We usually make a stop in Joe Pops, the Quarterdeck, and Buckalews. LBI has one of the most beautiful and relaxing beaches in the US, it's certainly not the "dirty Jersey shore" that so many people seem to think it is for whatever reason. All of South Jersey is beautiful IMO. It's just really been getting tough to find affordable rental properties on LBI the last few years. Got any cheap rental units ya wanna hook me up with for a week next July? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Oh...and BTW, anyone who likes the classic southern rock sound but may want to try something new, I suggest you give a listen to a band from Kentucky called "My Morning Jacket." They're sort of a cross between Skynyrd, the Allmans, and maybe a little swirl of Floyd with a hint of Jackson Browne...hard to compare to anyone else, they're truly a unique sound with an outstanding front man named Jim James. They're the best newer band out there if you ask me. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

What have you been paying and which town? Let me know and I might be able to hook you up..Anything ocean front on the north end is 15 grand a week on up, south end is a lot cheaper. We built a house for a guy who is getting 50 grand a week, not to shabby, and he is booked solid..

Re: Calling All Music Fans...

There's usually about 8-10 of us and we like to stick towards the middle of the island but we're not terribly picky. This past summer we got a place in Brandt Beach across from the Custard Hut right on the boulevard that comfortably slept 8 and we paid $1600 for the last week of July. I'd prefer being on the beach side but walking 2 blocks was worth the savings. I'm looking for anything in that $15-1700 range for a week in July '06. Let me know if you can help.
