Does anyone have any experience with concrete polishing? I hear you get a great shine to the concrete and can even do some custom coloring...

I'm thinking that if you polish concrete...it'll be really slippery with even the slightest bit of moisture... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Does it have a smooth and shiney finish after it dries, or is it kind of rough and dull?

I thought your earlier Blue color was to loud and detracted attention and focus away from the Cars & Walls.

I painted my garage floor last night with Rust-Oleum Epoxy Shield and it looks good. It has a nice gloss finish and so far I am happy with the results. I will let you know how it stands up to the wear and tear. I will start moving my "junk" in this week, finally!

Re: What's the latest on garage floors??

For the guy looking to use the U-coat it stuff, read everything on the subject at www.garagejunkies.net, a lot of negatives about U-Coat It, especially warranty help (supposedly deny everything) If you want to use Rustoleum, use the solvent based' Industrial coating only comes in gray, but A LOT more durable than the water based Home Depot Rustoleum kits. You will have to buy it online. The results are all in the prep, vac floor, wash with detergent, let dry, acid etch (muriatic), scrub and rinse 3 times, let dry and do the finger test ( wipe your finger on prepped concrete) if nothing shows up, start painting!

Cool poster I had mounted on canvas and coated to preserve it and make it look more like a painting. It was two halves that are attached in the middle to measure 4'x 10'. Dated 1966. The canvas is stretched and nailed to a wood frame. https://www.yenko.net/attachments/152292-P1010039.JPG

Re: What's the latest on garage floors??

I had my bodyshop building floor polished when I built it back in 1980. That was before I knew about the epoxy floors that they have today. I must say that it is not a bad choice. Oil will just wipe up and it is easy to wash and sweepup anything.

I think the adition of some color would be a good choice. Just be sure that they are using a higher grade (4500lb) of concrete or it will have too coarse of a finish.

At least you won't have to worry about it peeling off.

For those of you that don't understand what we are talking about if you have ever paid any attention to the floor in hospitals or other public buildings that is high polished concrete.

AKA 'terrazzo'?

Re: What's the latest on garage floors??

Any Lowes or Homet Depot has a polished concret floor in it also... Looks pretty nice actually, not as nice as a coating, but like you said, no chance of it ever peeling, which IMO, any coating has the potential to do eventually.

Re: What's the latest on garage floors??

Terrazzo is not concrete or cement. It is a slurry mix of portland and usually marble chips and after curing it is ground with a floor machine with stones to a high polished finish. Very expensive and a dying trade. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

I like Terrazzo https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif We installed it once in a hyperbaric chamber at the Travis AFB in CA - the knuckleheads pressurized the chamber before the floor was completely finished and ruined it https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif Nice stuff.

Re: What's the latest on garage floors??

Yeah that was what I was trying to remember the name of. That is what the floor at my home is. It was a converted two car garage into a pool room. I bought the house back in '89 (4800 sf)so cheap. (It has almost one acre on top of a hill, 3 blocks from where the PGA is held here in Tulsa for $190,000) One of the first things I did was convert it back into a garage.

The old bodyshop floor is just polished regular concrete and not near as expensive as the floor at home would cost. It is still a great value and tough as hell.

Re: What's the latest on garage floors??

I think the fact that it is very cost effective and tough as hell makes it a good choice.
