Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78

Thanks for keeping an eye out.. but this 66 at Purebreed is just another "USED TO BE" 66 SS.. has no more value to me than any other restored 66 SS, well check that.. this is a poor job at best, so has less value I guess https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

There is no way to Prove the car here was REALLY an orig. L-78 car and even if there was paper on it, the original engine is gone.. it is no longer what it used to be .. thems just the facts https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

Appreciate the eyes

Not sure if this `66 is legit or not, might be worth looking into?

*note* window sticker lists the L78 as 425 HP??? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78

Whoa, cool car. While the early L78s in Corvettes were rated at 425hp, I have never noticed this on '66 Chevelles. I hope the docs are a more real than the factory A/C set up https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif

Don_Lightfoot 11-23-2005 04:46 AM

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78

Hmmmmm, let's see - factory would not add P/S because it was a 425 HP car. Hmmmmm - looks like a nice Pontiac power antenna setup as well. Hmmmm, Hmmmm, Hmmmm........

Can't wait for Mike to make a comment about this car, if he feels it is appropriate to comment https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Of course, I am always willing to learn and not discount anything.

-------This red 66 is a beautiful car with issues. To me, both sets of rivets are wrong. The tach has the wrong redline. Am I wrong that I think that the twelve-bolt rear-end cover was installed upside down. As well, shouldnt the wheels be body-colored??? What havent I seen???...........Bill S

Xplantdad 04-02-2006 08:38 AM

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78

If it's a real 375hp it should have an idler pulley...

The car looks really cool, though https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78

Bill's right, Diff cover upside down, if the front wheels are straight....then the wood wheel is upside down also.....wrong radio knobs.....looks like the turn signal mechanism has some issue also......looks like a nice throw together and should be in my garage......lol

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78

Who wrote their ad copy????? Quote from their ad text: "In 1964, Chevrolet saw the need to replace its aging Chevy II." https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif In 1964, the Chevy II was a whopping 2 years old https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif so I doubt it was ready for the scrap heap. Agree with Bill, those Trim Tag and VIN tag rivets are way wrong. I would think it impossible for the diff cover be on upside down since the ring gear clearance is offset to one side https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif

kwhizz 04-03-2006 07:00 PM

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78

Yeah....you're right.....after looking at it again, it's installed correctly (Differential Cover)...the purpose of the embossed shape is to catch the lube thrown off the ring gear and channel it back to feed the bearings.......Geesh!!! I must have been really tired when I looked at the pic's yesterday........

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78

a $40K car IF it looks as good in person as in photos. If it were a REAL 66 L-78, the price is a great deal IMO., but HIGHLY doubt it.. So many problems, doesn't appear to have Correct Square port Heads, No Idler pulley, No pics of teh deck stamp, No pics or response to all the extensive owner hx., 27K miles and they lost the all of the correct parts I guess.. No spiral Shocks, wrong exhaust, spash pan painted wrong, Wheels should be body color, camps are all wrong, Pedals are wrong, Radio Knobs wrong, hurtin lookin heater control, Dog dishes are painted incorrectly, exhaust manifold bolts are wrong, rear diff bolts, suffice to say, lots of detail mistakes.. and the VIN rivets are repro, TRIM TAG rivets from ACE HARDWARE https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif

Good luck to anyone bidding.. Buyer Beware is all I can say.

Another minor item to add to your list... the VIN tag is on upside-down. Should be able to read the tag standing outside the car looking in through open driver's door.

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78

Upside-down diff covers and tags....sounds like this car (or it's creator) must be from 'Bizzaro World'? .
Hey Helmut, is your '67 SD an L35 car and is this the best a Mk1V could be in these cars or was there any L34 and L78 cars produced? . Thanks! .

Pete, my SD is an L34 "EF" suffix code (4-speed) car. I've been led to believe that there were NO L78 Beaumont SDs built in 67 (but I haven't confirmed that). I was really disappointed to learn that.... given that I seem to make room in my garage for any solid lifter bow-tie that crosses my path!

Re: 66 or 67 SS Chevelle L-78

Thanks Helmut....I thought the same on no L78's but wasn't sure also didn't know on the L34's....so that'd make your L34 the top-dog in a '67 and ragtop to boot! . I'd expect you have the GM Canada docs....I'd be interested in what they may have listed as production for '67 rags also did it include a breakdown into SD or Mk1V's? . How long have you had the L72 Chevelle....that's sure a solid little group you've got in your garage! . Thanks! ~ Pete

You would think by now they would have seen fit to edit all the BS statements and incorrect information in the ad....but nooooooo https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif When you want 80K for a 66 Chevelle coupe and can't even get the engine size right, that speaks volumes https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif
