Opening in firewall behind LF lower fender????

What is this hole in the firewall for???

Obviously not factory but unless it was for better air flow into the interior I can see no reason to have it. In my opinion it would be dangerious to have there as engine heat and exaust would be pulled into the interior of the car. If I was doing the Tech at the races on this car he would have to block it off before I would let it race in case of a engine fire.

Is there black out around the interior side door window frames on this car? We are just finishing an Olympic Gold 69 Nova SS. It had black out. I would love to see a pic of that area. Thanks..BKH

That headlight bezel is a 68-only, non-SS part.

Re: NEW ARRIVAL-69 NOVA L-78 4 speed with 7,000 mi

I would say paint it black. These are black up to the door seals and then Olympic Gold on the rest of the inside of the door frame. It is black between the seal and the window glass. No gold shows near the window its self. Hope this is clear enough to understand.

It is too dark to get a good pic today but if you really need some pic's, then e-mail me and I will take some for you tomorrow.

Re: NEW ARRIVAL-69 NOVA L-78 4 speed with 7,000 mi

Thanks

I guess someone must have changed it at sometime or another.
I was just sure that, that one was the original and the black one was off some other car. I see that is just the oposite so I learn something else new. I have a lot to learn about these cars.

The trim on the LS just above the part in question is damaged and there is a very minor dent just to the outside the point of the fender so I was just too sure that it had been replaced. I guess perhaps it must be the original part.

I feel that the front fenders are original to the car.

Thanks for your help.

The 69 AIM does not have that page to check the bezel number. The part listed in the 69 Parts and accessories book is 3914759 (LH) and 3914760 (RH) for 68 only. Could the 8 be a 6?

That opening in the cowl side is not factory. I wonder why it was cut out?

Pantera, nice find - good car. I wouldn't be too concerned about 'survivor' status, do a full frame off, and drive it like you stole it https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: NEW ARRIVAL-69 NOVA L-78 4 speed with 7,000 mi

After looking at your pictures, I tend to agree with Marlin on doing the frame off. You get into the, what do you change, and what do you try to save dilema.
The hole in the outer lobe of the firewall could be alot of things. It could have been a rust spot that they cut out to keep from spreading. They may have cut it out to get air in there for drying purposes, or they may have dropped something down the cowl, and just decided to hack it open to retrieve what they dropped. Some folks do crazy stuff. You might want to put on qtrs rather than scab on patches as I would think the outer wheelhouse may be rusted also. If you have rust under the tail light panel, you may need to replace that tail pan too. Overall she looks pretty nice. Those front frame mt bushings show me they were'nt kidding about the 7k miles. Re: NEW ARRIVAL-69 NOVA L-78 4 speed with 7,000 mi

I am sure of the number. what do you think that is off of? I looked at all the later years and none has chrome around the light like this one. All of them were black next to the light???? Go figure...

The cut out looks like they were trying to get more air into the car under their feet. that would not be a good place to pull air into the car as you would get all the heat off the motor. I found header bolts so it may have had a set of tube headers at one time.

There is no stock exaust left anywhere. so he may have ran header mufflers straigh back underneath.

I will spot wield a patch back over it and thank goodness it will not ever show unless you are looking hard for it.

That headlight bezel is from a '68 Nova, non-SS. For correctness, it is a one-year-only part. The 69 bezels had headlight aiming/adjustment slots in them and were black around the headlight.

The 70-72 were similar to the '69, but they also had a vertical rib down the middle of the hump.

Re: NEW ARRIVAL-69 NOVA L-78 4 speed with 7,000 mi

All you would have to do is open or close one of the doors and you would be a beleiver about the mileage. The bushings are a big giveaway as was the nylon detent on the drivers door lower hinge. Still looks new.

The hole is in front of the air vent inside the car so they would not have droped anything in there with out being able to take it out easyly.

They would have had to do it with the fender off too. ???

The wheel openings are just rusted off and the wheel house is still in good shape. They may have cut them to run bigger tires on the back and then didn't treat them to stop it from rusting.

I want to try to keep it as original as I can so I will try to find a donor car for the parts that I need. I will use a heavy rust preventer afterwards. The back could be fixed but I may go ahead and change the tail panel to make it stop the rust in that area.

This is next winters project, after I get the Motion vettes back on the road. So I have all summer to locate parts for it.

The LF '69 Bezel that you just described sounds like the one that I have. Now I just need to find a RH one to match it.

Perhaps this car has had a RF fender changed at one time. the inner wheel wells look like new ones.

Thanks for the info.

As I am absorbing more & more info about Novas as I can,I was under the impression that the early built Novas had their door hinges welded, and later was bolted. Is this true, and what are the ones on your Nova like?
Thanks.

I have a pair of correct '69 headlight bezels. Email me at: [email protected] if you are interested.

Click the link below to see them.

http://community.webshots.com/photo/...23777130dJhDOY

Novas built from the 68 model year through December 1969 ('70 model) have bolt-on door hinges.

Based on my observations, Novas built from Jan. '70 forward have weld-on hinges.

Larry listen to Marlin and Ken S as they have both restored Novas. I saw the car with my own eyes and if you want to do the car right it could use new quarters, tail pannel, and a rear deck lid. (which you were already lucky enough to have gotten with the car) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif

Re: NEW ARRIVAL-69 NOVA L-78 4 speed with 7,000 mi

Since the car needs a total repaint, probably a new tailpan, the front sub completely detailed, among other items that you will discover as you proceed, there is really no 'survivor' status left. The original drivetrain is great, and the interior is nice, but this car is not a survivor. I'd pull the 1/4's off, replace the outers, and brag about all the original items and hardware that you only have to clean up and reuse https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

BTW, love the color! No v/t, no moldings, XT's, 4sp, 731, when is my luck showing up = jealousy https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

Re: NEW ARRIVAL-69 NOVA L-78 4 speed with 7,000 mi

Man I only have one XT wheel on the car. It does have a small letter Goodyear G-70 white letter turned in on the RF. all the others seem to be 70 vintage wheels. I am hopeing for someone to need them and that they will have the wheels that I need to trade.

Of course I am planning on putting a set of Rallys on it so that I can have radials to show it off on the street once in a while. But, I do want to have the original wheels and hubcaps for big shows like SCR8 when I expect to have it finished and ready to show off.

I know the more I look at it the more that I find to like about it. Especially the Olympic Gold color. It is growing on me everyday.

I realize the survior part is long gone. The thing I find most important is that it is not a total clapped out shell. The floors and everything about it are showing so little damage I just hate to try to change out the Qtrs because the trunk is so nice inside.

I live a mile from where the Power Tour stops here in Tulsa this summer and I am sure that a couple of members of this forum will want to try to get a peek at it while they are in town.

By then I will know more about just which way I plan on doing the car. I am more of a go person than a "Show" person so I just may do a quality Day 2 on it. I think it would be fun to see it run down the strip once again. These cars were destined for that.

As I told Darrel,I think your Olympic Gold Nova would stand out VERY well with Red Line tires on SS rims or even Mag Wheel covers. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

No hubcaps for me. It will be hard to keep the pair of keystone front mags I have in storage, off it along with a pair of slicks on black rim's on the back.

Of course a set of Hooker headers would go nicely with the traction bars and air shocks that are already on the car.

Of course I was alway partial to American 200-S mags too. I also think a set of red lines would go good too.

My vote would be 15x4 and 15x7 Cragar S/S mags---as an extra set of wheels/tires to swap on once in a while, naturally. Cragars with redlines would look sweet too. So would body-color steel wheels with "COPO" caps. And, and, and...

Now you make me look when I have been trying to not look at them because it makes me crazy...

I will just have to get the motor in this car and hear it run and then the forces will speak to me about what to do with it.

It may be haunted since the owner died in '75 before getting to race it again. he may haunt me till I take it through the gears at SCR8.
